  1. @Mt_Rider. I always check Amazon first before I order something I find somewhere else. It's not that I like Amazon better. I don't. But with Prime I get free shipping which can save a couple of bucks and stuff arrives so much faster. Sometimes the same day. I ordered two of them and they arrived the next morning. I'm going to give one to sons. So, thank you for mentioning them.

  2. I spent most of the day canning yesterday. It isn't easy around here. I've found that I need to sit down often to keep from passing out. I think it isn't so much as a blood pressure situation as a it is a posture thing. Which affects my blood pressure causing it to bottom out. Sitting helps. However, I only have one chair in entire the house. A hard wooden dinningroom chair that doesn't reach the sink. And I have to keep an eye on the canner as it's building up steam and then pressure. Wouldn't it be nice if I had a recliner in front of the kitchen stove?  Such problems.  :grinning-smiley-044:  I really am thankful to be putting food in jars.

I've been canning for a month now with no problems at all. Every single lid sealed. I did 3 canner loads yesterday and had about 6-8 jars didn't seal. What the heck! That has never happened before. And so many. All of the lids are the ones that came with the jars. Jars were new. So back to the drawing board today because you know I'm nuts (OCD) and I'm trying to get at least 40 jars of each veggie.   I'm in the 30's on the corn and peas. I have 50 of the carrots and green beans. Lets hope i don't extend that number out to the corn and peas. I have number issues.   :gaah:   But they are all going to look nice on a shelf. That matters in my world too. I'm going to need some short shelves for all of these blasted half pint jars. I don't like to stack if I don't have to. I drive myself nuts. I wonder... uh- oh...if you stack a jar half on one jar and half on the jar beside it, sort of like straddling the two jars, if that would be a safe way to store them? I suppose a layer of cardboard between the layers would work too. But that's still weight on the bottom jar.

Oh, and I bought another small canner. 16 quarts. I'm loving it for smaller batches. It exhausts and builds up pressure so much faster. It doesn't stack so I'll still use the 23 quart one most of the time but it will be nice for smaller loads or to accompany the 23 qt. when I'm doing marathon canning.

    I'm stalling...

  3. @themartianchick Hope your hubby feels better soon! I always said I'd rather be sick myself than my DH or son. Note, both are males. :grinning-smiley-044:

I'm loving all of the pictures too.

@Becca_Anne That's awesome that you are planting so many trees. I want to map out my yard to figure out where to plant some too. I'm always afraid I'll make a mistake so I want to buy a program to help visualize. I had one but it is old and no longer compatible with my computer. But it was a help. Thanks for the reminder about free wood chips. I think my sons town offers them at the yard recycle place. He can take his pickup truck there for me and get some. I'm not sure if it's just for the city or entire county.

Today I'm catching up on some canning. I did some corn and peas in Indy but I want some more. After today I'll have 40 half pints of peas and 40 half pints of corn. Then 40 half pints of green beans. I already have 50 half pints of carrots. I think I have 36 half pints of asparagus. I'd throw a couple more jars in the canner but it's out of season now. Last week I saw some for $3.00 a pound. Yikes. I only paid $1.00 a pound. Unless I see some again in Amish country, I'll pass.

I started early today so I'm sitting down a lot so I don't pass out. I'm half tempted to go buy a smaller canner. That way I can do a few smaller loads at a time. I can also use it when I do major soup canning along with my bigger canner. Would be nice for those little squatty halh pint jars too. It seems like everything I can takes different times. I have one in Indiana but I could really use one over here right now.  Sigh. I think I'm gonna do it.

  4. Mt. Rider, glad you got a ride in but not with the cold weather. I usually feel a little bit warmer if my ears are covered up too. And my hands and especially feet always suffer in the cold. I get pins and needle sensations in my toes when they get cold. Hurts. I have that syndrome that affects the hands and feet when they get cold. Of course I can't think of the name of it right now.

Littlesister, you sure have had a time of it with that wood. But it's good you have it and at such a good price! Will be worth it.

Miki, I hope your DH can get a clear culture soon and get off if his antibiotics. That can't be fun for him.  :hug3:

I have no plans this weekend except to send back some canning jars to Amazon. I bought 2 cases of regular mouth Kerr jars for soafhetti sayce (that's spaghetti sauce. I hate yiu autocrap.) making. Pints. They sent me 2 cases of Ball Smooth Sided jars. I don't like those jars and that's not what I paid for. Luckily I don't need them right away. The nerve! I'm going to order them from Wal-Mart next time. I'm a Kerr jar snob. :grinning-smiley-044:

Raynaud. That's the word I couldn't think of. It usually comes to me eventually.

  5. @Becca_Anne, glad everything is fine in your neck of the woods. its nice that you have a basement to go to. Poor Ben, its hard to leave a pet behind, even for adults. But hopefully the dry runs will help him understand better.

Oh Dear, I didn't hear about the new bombing.

Thanks Mt. Rider and Mother. :sigh:

  6. Littlesister there is a place, RadAir, a couple of miles from me and I'll see if they offer a ride. I don't mind staying there for a hour or two to wait. I can take a drink a the Kindle. They did give me a loaner once but it was a fluke that they had one. I might have to wait until I go back to Indy so DIL can give me a ride. I noticed today it was getting warm in the Jeep.

That's a great idea Mother. I've heard that most people put wood and branches and leaves etc. in the bottom of their raised beds. Helps to fill them up so you don't have to add as much soil too.

  7. My heart monitor is off today and I sent it in:hapydancsmil:   It wasn't bad during the day but I alway kept waking up and checking it through the might to make sure it was still attached. It always was. Men wouldn't have that problem. Women...boobage.

There was a sign in the post office that said we can't send any electronics to Europe, Sweden and Norway. But we could send computers, cell phones and something else. Can't remember the other thing. I thought computers and cell phones were electronics.

I went to the local food bank and made a deposit. They were thankful to get it. It was frozen veggies that i over bought. They went to a good cause so I don't care.

Then off to get a pizza. I haven't had a good one since before I left the hotel. It will last me for supper and tomorrow's lunch.

I'm taking tomorrow off but Monday I'm calling to see about getting some of my yard landscaped and about getting my chimney cap fixed.

Oh and I forgot my car AC broke last fall. I need to see about getting that fixed. Not sure how without a ride.

  8. Thanks for asking OOTO. :hug3:

We did have some pretty bad storms roll through with some hail and high winds. We were in a tornado warning for most of the day. It has finally been lifted. No damage here so far. Supposed to be rainy tomorrow.

I think its heading north east of me so I hope it isn't heading your way!

  9. Miki, I'm glad Bo is working out so well for you. Getting him socialized and used to the neighborhood is a good thing. Bet he loves his walks.

Littlesister, I get it about canning meat. I don't have any canned right now so I have to get on to that. I'm sort of just the opposit. My kidneys are getting worse so I have to limit my protein. It's just a good thing I'm not a big meat eater. I want to can a lot of soups too. But they are the hardest thing for me to can. It takes longer to make it and I can in pints so I can't fit as many in the canner. So I put it off.

  10. Congrats to your GD on her track meet! I love it.

That brings back so many good memories. My son was undefeated in the 400 dash in his conference and ran in the all state finals. He held his high schools high jump record for over 10 years. I think he jumped 6 foot 2 and a half. I can't member his fastest 400.  He also ran the final leg of the 400 relay. He was a sprinter not a miler. He was long legged but wasn't a fan of the hurdles. I was able to get most of it on video. Back then video cameras were fairly new and huge. Really huge. LOL. Later I transfered all the tapes on to a DVD. Yeah, I was that mom.  About a month ago he ran across it and showed his son and wife. I asked GS what he thought about it and he said, "Well grandma, you sure filmed a lot of sky and ground." I was new at it. Sheeesh. Thanks for noticing kid.

Two years of Jr. High and four years of high school I was on a bleacher on the ground or in the car. Cross Country, Volleyball, Basketball and then Track and Field. Every. Year. In-between he sang bass in the school choir. At the time I didn't realize just how good those memories would be. Thanks for the flash backs.

  11. You have a lot canned up! I'm not much of a meat eater but I'm going to be canning some up anyway.

I want to do chicken chunks and pork chunks to use with dipping sauce. Mostly Bar-B-Q sauce.

Glad you got your mulch. I just had my son call my lawn people too. It was so high and it's supposed to rain the next couple of days. They are here now. At least they came right away. What is it with these lawn care people. My last guy quit because I located two shrubs that he couldn't find. Big baby. Good riddance, he was too expensive anyway. My town doesn't play with over grown lawns. They post big neon green warning signs on your door.

  12. Another eventful canning night. I started out canning carrots. I originally got 36 half pint jars. I canned them in Beefy Onion Soup Mix. They turned out nice so I went and bought a couple more bags. I ended up with 50 half pints. Sounds like a lot, and it is, but my canner holds 25 half pints. So in reality it was only two canner loads.

Half way through I started feeling faint. I took my blood pressure and it was 80/58 heart rate 82. Sheesh. That's too low even for a normal person. I was fine before and about an hour later. I think it's from the POTS. The 'P' part of it AKA postural (posture). I had been standing at the kitchen sink for a couple of hours when it hit. Sad when we have to play our own doctor. The tilt table test would have probably helped with the diagnosis but...transportation issues.

But I've decided that I'm going to can all I can this year, not only because of the economy, but I'm not sure how many more years I can do it. My hands and back and legs were killing me and nearly fainting every time I can food is getting harder and harder. Hopefully once I get what I want canned, I'll be able to keep it topped off. I hope.

Tomorrow I'm going to can another load of green beans. Then I'm going to top off my corn and peas. I think I have about 30 corns and 30 peas already done in Indiana. I eat a lot of vegetables. And I'll share with sons if they want. Only veggie left is beets. I want to pickle some later this summer.

Next will be chicken, beef and some pork cubes. And spaghetti sauce and salsa. Sigh.

I'll round out the summer with a couple  of vats of soup. I can veggie soup and chicken veggie soup. And bean soup. Hopefully I can stay upright long enough. And have enough jars.

  13. Midnightmom, you are welcome to move into my new kingdom. Where we kick a$$ and take names. :hug3:

My DIL's father does that with his belt too. Butt crack and belly hanging out but by golly his waist is belted in tightly. Embarrasses them too no end.

I've been relegated to typing on a cell phone and it's rough. Not only does autocrap misspell,  it adds letters to the beginning of some of my words. In the post up above it added 'go' to the word thoughtful. gothoughtful? Auto didn't even correct it just now. Nor capitalized it.

Never mind what I type these days. Just go by what I mean. :D

My granny used to say that. "Don't go by what I say. Go by what I mean" I have turned into my grandmother. :sSig_help2:

  14. @Midnightmom, if you like the corned beef and it is a good price where you are at, I'd buy what I could find.

I checked it out on line:

12 cans of the original chunky. 11.5 oz.

    Amazon = $71.00

    Wal-mart = 77.00

But Amazon has the 7 oz. 12 pack size for $52.00. Is that the size you have? That sounds more doable for me. I need to see some 11.5 oz and 7 oz. cans side by side to better judge for myself.

Product of Australia with no hormones and no antibiotics. That's a plus these days.

  15. That was a very thoughtful post Mt. Rider. I think it describes most of us very well. Non-standard-issue body parts indeed!  :D

Auto correct got me again. Its getting worse. It's making up words now. I don't think it likes me any more.

  16. I woke up with a migraine starting. It's been a long time since I've had one. I used to get them all the time but since menopause, they have eased up a lot. Hormone triggered I suspect.

I did go to the dumpster and dropped off two stinky bags of trash. Wal-Mart was right there so I went in to get some onion soup mix that I wanted. Mistake. It was a madhouse. I'm starting to really resent those great big carts the employees push around who are shopping for others. They are so big and in the way and block half of the aisle. I saw one actually bump into a lady once because the shopper couldn't see around it. I hate em.

Now if I ran the world... here we go... they would only do shopping during certain hours once or twice a day. And, the greeters wouldn't be just standing there looking at their phone. Their job would be to to unstick those carts so all a person has to do is go in and grab a single cart without trying to wrestle one out of a whole line of mangled carts that are all stuck together. One more thing, piercing is a personal choice. I'm fine with them. But when I go through a drive-thru I don't want to see a nose piercing hanging down like their nose is running. Take it out while you are serving food. I only got a sweet tea but it looked gross. And I'm sick of everyone backing into a parking spot. It's thanks to the backup cameras in all the cars now. You pull up behind a car and all at once they want to back up half a mile so they can try to back into a parking spot. Or if you are walking in the parking lot, they nearly run you over because they aren't looking where they are going. They are staring at a camera screen. Just pull your car in so we all know where you are trying to go. You're going to have problems loading up your groceries with the trunk jammed up against the trunk of the car that backed in behind you anyway. It's very doubtful you are going to have to make a quick getaway. Unless you are shoplifting. In that case get a buddy to park close to the door for you. Crimony. I got in line next to a guy whose butt crack was half out because his pajamas were falling down. He was over weight. So am I but I don't wear my loose fitting jammies to the grocery store. He was in his 60's and should know better. And he smelled pretty bad too. I ususlly don't pick that up. So he must have been pretty bad. I wasn't in the mood. Summer is coming on so I guess we'll be seeing halter tops and short shorts before long. Bellies and thighs galore. People are beginning to annoy me. And autocorrect...if I type one single letter 'i' you know it is supposed to be capitalized. There is no single lower case i. <-- And you do know what a contraction is, right? Do your job.

I feel so much better now. I've been holding it in for so long. Om. 🕉

  17. I don't think it was me but I do like to have it in the pantry and I'm out of it now. So I probably did mention it. That looks soooo good.

I've canned corned beef before though. I bought the big slab that you get at the store in the fresh meat section around St. Patrick's Day.

I pressure cooked it, tore it all apart to get all the fat out of it (that was a real pain in the rear!) And pressure canned it in half pints for reuben's. It turned out good but it wasn't so much like a spread. It was more like roast beef.

The only corned beef I've seen around here is corned beef hash. With potatoes in it.  Something like Marys Kitchen or Armor brands. I've never heard of that brand but I'll certainly look for it.

  18. Becca-Anne, you aren't feeling sorry for yourself. Just assessing your strengths and weaknesses. You can still make your dream come true. Just not today. Slow and steady will win the race. I think we are all tortoises here.

  19. It's Classico spaghetti sauce Necie. I have a few of those. They are very nice square jars with ATLAS embossed on two adjoining sides. I think the verdict is out whether they will stand up to pressure canning or not. Depending who you talk to I guess. I haven't tried canning with them but I wouldn't hesitate waterbath canning with them or vacuum sealing them.
