  1. Yes, I read about that, too! Just posted it in another thread. http://themostimportantnews.com/archives/welcome-to-the-new-normal-the-dow-crashes-another-390-points-and-wal-mart-closes-269-stores
  2. Does anyone on the forum have diabetic and kidney problems?
  3. The clear shutters look so much better than iron bars. I just wondered how you would get out in case of a fire?
  4. RoseMarie... just a word of caution about using too much almond flour or sunflower seed flour. Both are high oxalate. I never had problems with kidney stones until I started eating lower carb and part of that included these kinds of flours. Both are extremely high in oxalates which can cause kidney stones. Thanks Sassenach, we are leaning towards almond flour here. I tried for a year to removed processed foods from our diet without complete success so I am removing wheat which in turn will remove processed foods. Saintsfan is on board right now, he has agreed to try it for 2 months. We will see what he has to say come March 1. But so far so good he made the comment that even after just a few days he can tell a difference.

  6. I was wondering what flours you use to keep blood sugars low? I can't eat nuts or seeds (except pumpkin) due to low oxalate diet.
  7. It looks like I've made progress in cutting back on my egg usage.( I was out of commission for a week due to a kidney stone so that stretched them, too! ) We've talked about adding a few chickens but hubby is disabled and can't pick up the bags of feed and my back is having problems, too. I keep looking for ways to cut back on the work around here and unfortunately most of the work are things that save money. Very interesting to get old!
  8. Money is an issue! :-) Living on disability and 2 hospital bills to pay off from this summer. I may even wait on the Zero but wanted to research it until I have the money to buy it. Thanks for your input and experience.
  9. I am having problems with not drinking enough water and then passing kidney stones. I need to find a better way to filter more water other than the filter in my fridge. It's so slow. I wondered if anyone uses a ZERO pitcher? Do you go through a lot of filters in one month? I'm reading mixed reviews. What other ways do you filter your water? I need to have the fluoride taken out of the water, too. Thanks in advance!
  10. I've only made low sugar jam. I used the recipe that comes with the Sure Jell packages. It turned out great. I made low sugar berry jam. I also made SF jam but it goes bad so fast that I won't make too much again.
  11. It has been interesting to read all the different prices across the U.S. I bought 4 flats this past week and it cost $17 for 'checks'. I was eating way too many eggs so we are cutting back. These are very small so they gave me a free flat. I'm hoping to cut down even more next month. I need some new low carb/Paleo breakfast ideas to cut back on the eggs even more. Thanks, everyone!
  12. Eggs have more than doubled in our area. I buy 'checks' (sp?) from an egg farm, which are a lot cheaper, but a box of eggs still ends up costing nearly $30. I've cut back to 4 flats instead of 6 flats a month by frying eggs instead of scrambling (less eggs used) and baking less low carb treats (coconut flour baking uses a LOT of eggs) but I'd like to cut back even more. I think breakfast is the greatest challenge since I rarely eat grains. I do make a 'granola' from unsweetened coconut, cranberries and pumpkin seeds but other than that we get in a rut of eating eggs for a lot of our breakfasts. I wondered if anyone else is cutting back on their egg buying and if so... what are you doing to eat less eggs? Thank you in advance!
  13. Thank you so much! I ended up reading about Diatomaceous Earth and was able to find it at my feed store. Here is some good info I found. A big bag only cost me $3. I already saw big segments on the fur of one cat after giving her D.E. http://wolfcreekranch1.tripod.com/diatomaceous_earth.html
  14. Hi Ladies, Both my cats seem to have worms. They were feral cats that I rescued so I believe they brought them with them. We are living on disability so money is tight. If I have to I'll take them to the vet but if I can avoid it then it will be better for us financially. I'll have to dip into our small savings to take them to the vet. I don't want them to suffer though and I sure don't want to pass the worms on to anyone else. I had a 'country friend' who said to just keep the fleas under control and not worry about it. But, I occasionally see a worm on the one cats fur (which really grosses me out). I tried 2 over the counter meds which did not get rid of them completely. Does anyone have any good 'country skill' advice? I know that years ago someone would not even consider taking a cat to the vet for worms. What did they do? Was it effective? Also, I could use some advice on flea control. The flea medication is SO expensive. Thank you in advance! Georgene
  15. You are so kind to get back to me. Thank you so much for letting me know. I, too, emailed the owner and she told me they were not accepting new people. I sure appreciate you asking through! Between working part time, caring for my husband who is disabled, grandchildren, housework and a mother who needs my help off and on... my hands are full. I'm trying to get things lined up in case my job ends so hopefully I can stay home and make some money from here. I really want to be back home with my husband. Blessings, Georgene Apparently right now members cannot even use their referrals if they have them left, I will let you know when they announce things are back up. ~~~~~~~ Also, wanted to mention Focus Forward. Their regular surveys are sort of low paying most of the time (from what I've experiences at least) but they do have online bulletin boards and in person focus groups that pay $100, they of course depend on area, and are usually geared toward being lawyers who hire them to get a cross section of local people to do practice for upcoming trials. Those are usually 3 hours, and you get paid by check immediately after. These are hit or miss though, but being on their mailing list will let you know when/if one is in your area so you can see if you qualify. The bulletin boards are usually a couple days in length and you log in and just answer questions on what they post for the day.
