  1. Not a clue, I'm not into conspiracies, the great reset (ROFL) or any other internet tripe. I have no bone in this particular fight, but it seems a number of you do. So with grace and a sigh, I'll bow out.
  2. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, Kappy, but Ambergris is quite right. The below quote is direct from the Government of India website. https://archive.pib.gov.in/archive2/erelease.aspx Some media reports have suggested that all health related collaboration with the Gates Foundation with National Health Mission (NHM) has been stopped. This is inaccurate and misleading. BMGF continues to collaborate and support the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. I have a real problem with misinformation, conspiracies and snake oil sellers. However, in this case, it was fairly simple to debunk the lies. Sorry According to WHO, India was declared free of Polio in 2014. WHO Certifies India As Polio Free (mea.gov.in) The rumour "Indian doctors blame the Gates campaign for a devastating vaccine-strain polio epidemic that paralyzed 496,000 children between 2000 and 2017," This groundless claim can be traced back to an Instagram post made on 7 April 2020 by Bobby Kennedy jnr. who is a founder member and supporter of World Mercury Project, a California-based organization that has been vocal against vaccines. Further, they are one of the biggest sources of anti-vaccine advertisements on Facebook. https://thelogicalindian.com/fact-check/bill-gates-polio-vaccine-covid-19-gates-foundation-21270
  3. Over this side of the pond a cluster of positive tests have come back from routine waste water testing that is carried out by the water companies. In Chiswick (London) I believe. It is said the Polio virus may have been shed from someone who has recently had a vaccine in a country where live vaccine is used. The government has recommended you check your vaccination records to see if you are up to date and if you are not, get a vaccine if you feel the need. Nothing really to panic about. As usual, the MSM have taken these results and recommendations and sensationalised them. I'm not bothered about the government, they have made a sensible suggestion but by god I'm sick fed-up the media (and I include these snake oil preppers) making a mountain out of a molehill.
  4. The elastic has gone in mine.......considering braces
  5. Today is 'Laydees wot lunch' day today. We're a loose gang of friends and hangers-on who meet now and then to chat and do something crafty and share some food. It's been a while since we last got together and now we have all retired, we are planning on making it more frequent.
  6. You hit the nail on the head, Jeepers. A credit card is incredibly useful but you must keep a handle on it as it is easy to see it as free money.
  7. Congratulations on your retirement Dogmom, so glad you made it over the line!. I'm a recent retiree too and it's bliss. I can't tell you how nice it is to get up and not have that sick feeling because you have to go to work. Enjoy!
  8. A propane burner was a consideration, getting the bottles of gas is a problem though. 91F!!! I wish! Yesterday it was 64F which is about average for this time of year in these parts.
  9. Thanks everyone, it's a help to get other opinions. The galling thing is that the glass induction hob has an extra large cooking area, but induction doesn't work with aluminium! So the options are to get a steel bottomed pressure canner or try on a ceramic hob like the one in the picture. So, what I take away from this is that it's OK to can on a portable ring, but it does get hot underneath, so I will now spend some time either finding out how much an induction friendly canner is or spend some time finding a portable hob with a large enough plate. I have considered an induction adjuster, but I'm wary due to the time the canner spends on the hob. All this because my son wanted a cat friendly kitchen!
  10. My son upgraded his kitchen recently and had an induction hob fitted. Obviously this does not work with my Presto Aluminium pressure canner. So I'm considering getting a portable ceramic hob like this..... Double Hot Plate, CUSIMAX 2400W Electric Hob Ceramic Hot Plate, Portable Double Camping Hob Infrared Cooktop with Dual Temperature Control, Easy to Clean, Black Stainless Steel : Amazon.co.uk: Home & Kitchen Do you think it would be safe to can on one of these?
  11. You have all shamed me. I have some green beans in the dehydrator. If things go as the government expect it to, I may be glad to have them. I'm trying to reduce my dependence on the freezer just in case we get power cuts this winter.
  12. My sentiments exactly Darlene. I spent a bit of time wrangling the basket of food inflation rates from the ONS website yesterday and the inflation rate on just food is around 6%. Percentages don't really mean much to me, so from now, I am going to keep a copy of my online food shopping receipt to try and track price rises.
  13. @Jeepers Have you tried steam blanching instead of boiling? I find it's much kinder to whatever you are blanching and the results are definitely better.
  14. Wow! I just did some sums and those tins of formula (if they are the a similar size 28-32oz) are more than twice the price! an 800g tin of formula here is £12.50 ($15.60) give or take a bit for brand difference. It breaks my heart that stores can see fit to price gauge formula. That's really low. I'd happily send over formula if needed.
  15. I haven't done much fruit either Jeepers. I'm a big fan of dehydrating frozen veg too. It saves so much time prepping and the quality is consistent. Has anyone else tried dehydrating cooked beans? Pinto work best, but Kidney and Cannellini work well too. They look a bit odd once dried, but come good once rehydrated.
  16. I feel guilty now. I have not dehydrated anything in a year or so. I feel the need to get some done!
  17. Today I'm having a girl's day out with a friend. We have a visit to the 'Scrap Shack' planned, it's a community based recycling store that has all sorts of things from paint and wallpaper to crafty things, wool and yarn, fabrics and haberdashery items. Everything is silly cheap and it's all been saved from landfill, the problem going there is it's not the sort of place you can just bob in and out of and you definitely need refreshments to keep you going. In other news, I have no more room for stores, even after the tidy up, the long term storage and the cupboards are full. So I'm taking that as a hint and now going back to rotating and replacing like with like as I use them.
  18. Just about to have some breakfast then I'm going to strip and varnish the other chair frame. The one I did earlier in the week looks pretty smart, it has made such a difference. I'm trying to get my head round not going to work, it's taking some getting used to. I've looked forward to retirement for several years, now I'm here, it's going to take a while to settle into it. Whoda thunkit?
  19. I have seen a recipe for homemade baby formula using evaporated milk, sweet syrup, vegetable oil and a couple of other ingredients. Maybe it would be worth investigating?
  20. @themartianchick OMG! I just noticed your sig. Bystander is my favourite dystopian fiction! It's the only one that makes any sense and pretty much describes how I think life after would be like. Brilliant writing as well. Going to buy Christmas at Bystander now
  21. I pulled out the fabric for the chair covers and made a start. I have one made, the the one I'll make tomorrow, then I want to strip and varnish the frames before reassembly. It's a job I've had on the back burner for months but I just haven't had the time or enthusiasm. I've recently been down in the dumps and after discussion with my son, I have decided it's time to retire. My job has been hell for nearly a year and I've not been coping with the stress or abuse so I'm off. Since the decision has been made, my blood pressure has gone from 160/110 (ish) to 125/85 ish. That alone tells me the job was killing me. I have just enough savings to see me through to collecting my pension if I'm careful.
  22. Went to the Breast Screening clinic and got my boobs squashed, just a routine screening. Heard from the Cancer trial I am taking part in, it was just a thank you letter and reminder to let them know if I move. If this testing system works, it will look for markers for a number of cancers in the blood before other signs are detectable. It will scan blood samples alongside regular screening programmes in the hope of detecting cancer at a much earlier stage. If you're interested, you can read more here.....NHS-Galleri Trial | About the trial I also did a bit of doomsday shopping (as my son calls it) and got some more soap, shampoo and shower gel for the hygiene box. I also got a some stocks for the medicine box. #feelingabitsmugnow
  23. It's nice to know I'm not alone in resisting Win 11. When my old Win 7 computer died I almost cried! I'd heard really bad reports on Win 10 and like some of you really didn't want to lose the disk drive. Anyhoo, I got a Win 10 computer and I'm used to it, just really miss the music and media player. I keep getting the 'do you want to upgrade to Win 11?' too, thus far I'm resisting it.
  24. I feel your pain LS. We started the process of a new kitchen in July 2021. November the contractors started work and were here 6 days then they went on to another job and told us they'd be back (yeah right!). Needless to say, they didn't finish and what they did do was a shambles to be polite. I tried for 9 weeks to get something done and the company steadfastly refused to cooperate and refused to refund us. Thankfully we paid with a credit card and a Section75 later, we got every penny back. We now have to give them 30 days to came and get their S%$^. 24days and counting, then it's all coming out and we start again. Never again will I have one company do everything. Specialists for each job all the way!
  25. That works this side of the pond too. Quick story. 10yr old great nephew has ants in his pants and won't sit still, he got on my last nerve, so I told him in my best mum voice to get on the chair, sit still and behave. His mom went into a meltdown and told me he can't help it as he's being tested for ADHD. I countered with...if that's the case, why is he sitting quietly on the chair watching TV? ADHD didn't exist til parents couldn't reprimand their kids.....
