  1. Well, you are right... we have limited "wilderness" experience. Hubby is a long-time city boy, I lived four years on a 27 acre wooded farm, and I LOVED the outdoors, but that was in MS, and the only wildlife I ever ran into was deer... you could hear coyote every now and then... but nothing as severe as mountain lions and bears. I camped, hiked, and spent pretty much all of my teenage years in the woods swimming in ponds full of water moccasins. Since we homeschool, my children and I are learning through a combination of online sources and books and videos about native wildlife, edibles, medicinal, etc. We are taking archery lessons as a whole family, and plan to use that as well as gun hunting eventually, but we have no experience with large game. Being that I lived on a farm, I did my fair share of rabbit, fish, and chicken gutting We are getting guns and lessons, and like I said before, don't plan to go all out until it is necessary for the safety of the family, until then, learn and put into practice. I think as far as the biggest drawback is that I have only lived in this part of the country for a year, and am VERY unsure of a lot of things, even more so in that the land we are buying is a different climate altogether than where we are (four hours apart.) As far as cooking, I have been looking into several options. Solar ovens for one, possibly alcohol stoves... not sure yet. I watched a seminar on cooking when the lights go out, and took notes, but I have yet to sit down with hubby and discuss pros and cons (he works loooooong hours). I am, of course, gleaning as much knowledge from this post and looking into those things as well. (Btw, what a wonderful bunch of people you all are!!)
  2. Wow. I am floored by your ingenuity. Strongly considering this idea now.... Thanks
  3. I have been considering it. The one thing that gets me about that is... (once again, I may sound foolish for this)... I worry about bears/mountain lions/etc being around, and me not having the vantage point to know before I come out to hunt or gather water, etc. Maybe I'm TOO paranoid. I think I am trying to over-prepare, or worry about too much, then I won't be able to do anything because something else might go wrong. Haha. "Do not worry about anything, instead pray about everything", I keep telling myself, I really do...
  4. I know it will be difficult to live without it, and we are considering solar... but the main reason we want to do this is not because of desire, but necessity. As I said, we have a home- a big home- with elec and running water and bells and whistles, but we are purchasing a mountain property (raw land), and we want to build a cinderblock/stone home on the property right smack in the center of the woods without letting ANYONE know it is there. We would be doing our own building and everything because I feel that when the time comes, we may need to be not only "off the grid", but out of the human population all together (be it zombies- haha, disease, starvation, mark of the beast, or martial law). So, because of the reasoning behind it, I would rather have no proof at all of our existence there. Even solar power creates its own issues, one being a highly reflective surface to be seen by flyovers, if we are placing it for maximum power....I plan to build facing south, with high windows to bring in any heat from the sun. But to be honest, this is the very beginning of our planning stage, meaning I'm open to suggestions.
  5. We are planning to be without electricity. We have a natural spring on the land, and we will be very far into the woods. We want to build and then do practice runs on weekends until it gets bad enough to need to go permanently.
