WHATCHA DOING TODAY?

Recommended Posts

Started storming around 6 this evening and it's been really rough all around us.  So far all we've had is rain and warnings for flood.  Nearly all the campgrounds in the Lake of the Ozarks area are flooded out and the race track at Wheatland, Missouri was hit by a tornado...according to the news across that area.  We watch weather etc., for a 4 state tri-angle to make sure we're "alert" and can usually see bad stuff coming long before it gets to us.  Our NOAA radio has been sounding off all evening and probably will all night.  Not much sleep tonight if it does. Hope all our friends in these disaster areas are safe.

Mt Rider - :hug3:

Today was a weird day.  Caught a cold which showed itself yesterday; not too bad except I had trouble falling asleep due to coughing fits.  That said, got up at 7:00 AM (reluctantly) and took the trash to the truck before Mary got up.  Today was "payday" for social security, so we wanted to drop off our garbage on the way to Walmart for groceries (no pickup in the country).  Checked the local stores' sale flyers, and holy Toledo, some good meat sales were on this week - Porterhouse steak for $7.98/lb; pork loin strips were 2 for the price of one; boneless country ribs for $2.95; etc.  Their boneless skinless chicken thighs & ground chuck were also cheaper than Wal Mart (our lowest priced store, generally).  We had just been talking last night about how food prices would probably go up due to the flooding (no feed crops planted yet, hayfields flooded; and had decided to get another small freezer for stocking up.  So I ordered the freezer, and we bought our meat.  We had been waiting for a good sale for quite a while, and M was impressed with the quality & service at that particular grocery store, one we do not normally go to (except for meat sales).  They pride themselves on the best meat in town, and if you chat up the butcher you can often get a heads up on upcoming sales.

Then when we got home, I let the doggies out the back fence, and they immediately barked and chased away a flock of buzzards.  Much to my dismay, the buzzards were digging up where we had buried a kitty that got hit by a car.  A couple of hefty concrete blocks took care of THAT sacrilege.  Its been hot and due to get hotter this weekend - into the high 90s maybe into the 100s....summer has arrived, in spades.  Getting up at 7 AM might work out better for getting outside work done early in the cool of the morning, like I was taught to do in pre air-conditioning days.  Yep, I'm THAT old.  The garden is producing lots of lettuce and I'm eating it like crazy to get it before it bolts in the heat, when the okra will take off.  We are still waiting for the local nursery to get sweet potato plants in.  We're hoping this weekend.

You can plant sweet potatoes until the fourth of July.  They need hot ground more than they need any number of days in the ground.

I packed a little more and got the Jeep loaded up again. I'm headed out to Indiana tomorrow. I'm not sure when I'll be back. I'm planning on Monday but I suppose it will depend on if I get some furniture and if I do when they can deliver it. I'm thinking about bedroom and dining room because I know pretty much what I want. Simple stuff.  I NEED living room stuff though because now the only place we have to sit is on the floor. I'm not sure what I want though. I guess I need a replacement canvas canopy thing for over the deck area too.

I'm scared. I know its going to cost me a fortune this weekend. It will be cheaper to buy new than to hire someone to move my ratty old stuff I have here though. Sigh.

Have a safe and productive trip, Jeepers.  Watch out for crazy holiday drivers!  Everyone else too!  :grouphug:

:amen:   Today I woke finally feeling much closer to my normal:cheer:   Got my hair washed.  DH and I got 2 loads of laundry done and put away.  Made gravy for the roast and potato leftovers.  Just lotta quick things here and there.  Resting in between.  Compared to yesterday when I could hardly walk...even with the quad cane.  Knees just kept giving way...even when I locked them.  Whooee.  This has been such a long siege but dropping the medication will surely help.  But....that med was slowing me down so much --- I didn't need the sleep aid.  :faint3:   Now I'm struggling with that again....so I must be back to normal.

MtRider  ......aaaand it SNOWED most of the day.  Melted tho.  Sheeeeeeh!  :frozen:

Did semi-annual goat shed cleaning yesterday.  Even with a young man hired to help, it was a big job--about 3 hours of straight work.  Deposited all "leavings" up in rose garden and raked them out.  Also finished transplanting free veggies from friend.  Garden is looking pretty good.  Very tired this morning, but went for walk and will dead head some roses later.

Made a batch of bone soup, using chicken fingers, leftover from the wings, garden carrots & celery. Canned 3 pints.

Company came over, cooked machaca, refried beans (leftover from making MIL’s bean broth), and jalapeño poppers from our two bushes.  Then, cleaned up the kitchen.

Listened to our neighbors having quite a big party, probably something to do with graduation. They were hooting & hollering late into the night.

Food for thought... we got Sonic’s .50 cent corn dogs Thursday, I guess the nitrates were more than we are used to...DH had a SVT attack. :runcirclsmiley2:  That’s the last time we will be having them.

DH has outdone himself AGAIN! :imoksmiley: Our woodshed grew because of the free power poles from local neighbors. We didn't realize just how BIG they were, and the shed is on a rock shelf.   :0327: We decided to go with a three-section woodshed. The first two are for 10 cord of wood and the last section for our farm tractor and some small implements. B)  I keep thinking about the TEN cord of wood that needs to be cut, split and stacked this year. We have several cord already under cover so will only have to work on eight cord.  :24:  That guy is going to kill me with work!!   :grinning-smiley-044:  Whatever you do, don't retire. It is a lot of hard work that I don't remember doing when I worked full-time.  :scratchhead:

Whooooooeeee!  That's a heavy duty shack y'all are building for a woodshed.  ;)   I think DH would agree with working harder post-retirement, Homesteader.  He's recently retired and he's out and about fixing too.  Fixed the disintegrating box where the creek comes out of the culvert pipe.  We use it to have a deep place to dip water for ducks, etc.  The decades of creek running thru it have near to washed it away.  So...he kinda fixed it.  Think the drill ran out of power before he got the last screws in tho.  Isn't that always the case?

MtRider ....DH isn't one that likes fixing tho.  :grinning-smiley-044:

Mullein Leaf tea is wonderful for coughing episodes...dried and shredded.  I use about 2 tablespoons in a large coffee cup and add a bit of Stevia.

We both can almost immediately tell the difference between home cooked meals and restaurant meals.  We seldom eat out but when we do we try not to eat fast foods, even though most restaurants run a pretty close 2nd to fast food!

Dontcha know you can never "retire" a carpenter! You're right about retiring.  I work harder now than I ever did when I worked in a real estate office.  Hubby....he's always worked hard.  Like I said, carpenters just never really retire.

Today was a long and hot day for both of us...but...my van is home!  Hubby is working now on the side mirrors.  They won't stay put and we can't find replacements, so he's trying to make new screw holes with some sort of stuff Ace Hardware techy suggested.  It's supposed to set up in 24 hours...praying it works!  :pray:If so, he'll do the passenger side also.  While he was working on the mirror (we were at the homestead most of the day) I worked pulling up more poison ivy starts, then transplanted 3 of my new tomato starts (they're looking wonderful!) into separate pots that hang on my "sort of like" green stalk thing.  I still have about 5 more in the original pot and they're looking great also.  The radishes are looking good, the carrots looking good, and the petunia's, begonia and impatence are looking mighty pretty.  Refilled my hummy feeders and hung a "dangle" on one of the porch hooks.  It's a swirling thing that when the wind blows it swivels and "looks like" it's changing shapes.  Carried the table we bought for the van (in between the front seats) down from upstairs (what a chore!) and put it in the van.  Fits perfectly.  Has a nice decorative rail around the edges so when we set things on it, they don't slide off very easily.  Hubby will build some cup holders that will fit on top for us to sit our drinks on.  There's only two on the console.  Sprinkled Abby-girls soft bed with lavender, put it in the dryer on fluff, and put it in the van for her to lay on (if she wants) when we're travelling.

Tomorrow we're planning to make a day trip to put out some flowers for our loved ones that have passed on.  Hopefully the weather will leave us alone until we get home.

While working around the homestead today I opened up the small chest freezer and found a huge bag of sausage links!  How did they get by us!  Brought them home and I'll get them re-packaged as soon as I can.  Also have a large block of sliced cheese that I need to repackage and freeze some.

Well of course I forgot it was a holiday weekend. Going over on Friday wasn't bad at all. There were TONS of police out cruising. Not only that but pulling over too. I usually keep the speed limit or under so no worries on my end. Except I don't have cruise control so I had to pay attention to the speedometer. It is toll road over 95% of the way so it's an easy drive. Gas on the toll road was $3.09 so I didn't think that was bad for toll road prices and a holiday weekend.

I came home Sunday evening and the road was nearly empty. There were many stretches of road where I didn't see a single car behind me for miles. It really surprised me. Maybe the heavy traffic is on Monday. I didn't want to wait to see.

DIL took me shopping all afternoon on Saturday. She said she knew of a lot of furniture stores in the next town over. She did! But boy were they seedy. Showroom furniture that had the varnish peeling off and the joints coming unglued. I hope they weren't putting their best foot forward. I don't blame her. Furniture isn't what it used to be. I'm old, I want this to be the last furniture I buy. I think that furniture was on the five year plan. Five years and it's out to the curb. The one furniture store there in town, I couldn't afford to walk in. There has to be a middle ground.

I'm really not that picky. Honestly. But I knew what kind i wanted. Maybe that was the problem. Son asked me what specifically I wanted. A little exasperatedly I thought. Pffft. I brought him into this world and can.....never mind. Furniture.  I want oak. Amish made would be nice. But I want oak. One, I like it and two all of my other pieces that I already have are oak so I don't want to replace them. I'm going to tell you right now, furniture stores do not sell oak any more.

We were so hot and sweaty and tired and hurting all over by Saturday night. Miserable and disappointed. Oh and the one store that I saw online that had some furniture I liked went out of business two weeks ago. Either I really missed out or they were 'fly-by-night' and I got lucky.

Their solution was to go over to Shipshewanna with a U-Haul and get something. It's a couple of hours away but doable. But who is going to unload that U-Haul once we get it to my house. My back hurts thinking about it. But it was an option. I suppose. Thinking about having it delivered never even crossed anyone's mind.

So DIL got on the internet and looked up Amish furniture stores in northern Indiana. Oh my. After all of that, there is one about 10 miles from their house. DIL said yeah, I remember that. Son said he knows right where it is. I was caught between two raging emotions. Do I hug them or smack their heads together. I got my shoes on and grabbed my purse instead.

Naturally, nothing ever goes smoothly for me. It's a showroom where you order the item and then they make it by hand. Which means it will take 6-8 weeks but they do deliver to my town. What to do what to do.

I've never had new furniture and I have been saving up for this soooo, this week I'm going to go online and order it. The guy was super nice and said he will work with me by computer, pictures, samples, the U.S. Mail or what ever. I already picked out the sample color while I was there and he has a pretty good idea about what I'm looking for.

I want plain. Nothing fancy. Plain oak furniture. Sigh. I know this sounds like I'm a picky spoiled brat. But honestly I'm not. I just want oak furniture that won't fall apart when g'son and I jump on the bed.

Speaking of you-know-who, lawsy, everything is why, why, why and I don't want to. I went to get my suitcase out of the Jeep when I got home and there sat his carseat. Luckily they have two but it will be a hassle for them changing from the cars. And, it's taking up packing room for my next trip. But that's the way it goes around here...

That doesn't sound unreasonable to me!  Sounds right smart!!!  And Amish made....you-know-who can inherit grma's furniture someday and it will still be good.  :AmishMichael2:

I don't feel well tonite.  It's been better since I'm not taking the med.  Not recovering as quickly as I'd like....of course.  :bounce:   ( Ugh...that guy makes me dizzy! )   I have cardio doc appt tomorrow.  First one and likely   he'll only be a specialist "in my back pocket" so to speak.  Since the ER stopped the heart med.  Who knows.

Been walking the dog most nites.  Not far but it's something.

On my, I didn't even know anything was going on. What ever it was I slept right through it. I just crashed lastnight. I do hear some thunder out there now and it's pouring down rain...still. Poor Midwestern farmers...And our food prices. I guess even more of our "home grown organic" food will slip in under the border.

Sorry but I don't believe labels any more. Guess i'd better shut my trap and turn on the TV to see what is going on around me.

It feels so good to get back home. Even a couple of days away will do me in. It's a super easy drive but five hours one way singing to George Jones and the Randy's  (Travis and Tritt) with only Indiana flat land for scenery for a view...can make one weary. That will teach me to remember to take along a couple of books on CD's from now on.

It's thundering again.

Sorry you are still feeling bad Mt Rider. My thoughts and prays will go with you tomorrow!

It's storming here again tonight. It has rained all day.

Now I can't find my car keys. :scratchhead:

I always put them in my purse or in my pocket. Always. I haven't been out of the house since I rolled back in Sunday night so they have to be in here. This is crazy. I never lose my car keys. Upsetting and frustrating. Why do I do this crap to myself.  :motz_6:

Glad you're ok, Jeepers.  Hope you find those keys!  Didja look in the "breadbox"?   That's our euphemism for some place absolutely ridiculous .....but your hands did something when you mind wasn't watching them.  :busted:    My hands would never do something that devious!  :grinning-smiley-044:

I felt rotten this morning but I think it was just the MS Morning Thing.  The main reason I don't make appointments for mornings.  By the time we had to go, I was okay.  A bit more weak than usual.  Bit more easily set off kilter.  :imoksmiley:    Used the the new wheelchair for crossing parking lots and hallways.  Doc admired the hand brakes on the handles.  :)

The cardio appt went exactly as we hoped and thot it would go.  Doc was pleased with the results of all the tests the ER [other end of same building]  had done last Monday.  We thot it would make this appointment very quick/easy.  We did talk a bit about the anesthesia results.  I'm going to try to track down WHICH anesthesia I had.  Doc says because the AFib had a specific cause  [like anesthesia in my case, or car accident, or severe illness] there is a only a slight increase in chance it might happen again.  If the AFib happened without cause, it likely happens over and over.  So he thinks I'm clear....come back in 6 months....etc.  :amen:  :amen:   That's what we wanted to hear.  ....and no, don't take the medication that was dropping my blood pressure.

Then DH went grocery shopping while I got Father's day card and chocolate.  Rode store scooter!  Then we made this stop and the bank and this stop and......STOP!  I NEED FOOD QUICK!  Oh, he says.  Ate half a Subway while DH drove home and that helped.  :0327:  People live busier lives than I do.  But since we don't get into town as much, DH tries to do it all at once.  Yeah, ok....but keep me fed/watered!   Resting now.  Feel ok but just a bit TIRED!

Annarchy, how is MIL and the toasted house coming along?

Whew.  Glad the "holiday" weekend is over.  Like many country folks M & I work harder on 'vacation" than we do normally.  A hold-over from our working for money days, I think, when we saved up extra projects for our days off, LOL.  We ARE working harder than when we "worked".  My gripe is that my body keeps coming up with new, er, 'issues" and I'm getting pretty weary of every month or so discovering a new body part that needs work (only half kidding, no less!)

I did enjoy getting a new, short haircut.  I get many complements on the short hair, and I look far less disheveled with a short 'do.  No younger, tho (drat).  We are picking in our summer garden now like crazy, and battling what we think are cutworms.  Our green beans all of a sudden are falling over, cut straight across at the bases.  Cutworms are my best guess, but I didn't know they took on full grown plants until I looked up "cutworm damage" on google.  Last night at dusk we went out & picked green beans, then I went thru and lightly tugged on plants.  Those that came out were discarded; those that did not got a sprinkle of Sevin powder around the base, hopefully to terminate those li'l buggers.  We shall see - whether I go out to downed beans or not.  If it works we will replant (snap beans are quick) and this time sprinkle around the plants with Sevin or DE as a precaution.  (Probably alternate them, as both need replenishing after a rain.)

I am getting more notes for my garden notebook...Georgia mustard bolts quickly in heat, do not plant again until late fall.  Florida Wave is still holding the line, even in 90+ weather so is a good summer type.  The lettuce is ready to pick now, both are handling heat well, so far.  (Note to self: the French are correct, sauteed lettuce is an excellent cooked green - I stir fried some of the thinnings and they were delicious even tho much milder than other cooking greens.  Also fill in the empty row from bolted mustard with collards -yummy- and add a half row of turnips for my doc, she keeps hinting how much she loves them, and I think she means the whole plant, not just the greens.)  Replanted radishes, they were quick in and out; do not know what they will make of the heat; and FINALLY got sweet potatoes in.  Have to remember the cultivar this  time..."Beauregard".... the same kind as gave us 5 lb sweets last year.

We also put down newspaper sheets tight next to the zucchini vines, to discourage vine borers, but not before I buried a TUMS tablet at the base of each one (slow release calcium to counter blossom end rot from rapid growth, according to an organic gardening site I found).  We shall see how that works, it seemed logical enough and much easier at this point (the zucchini are already bearing) than digging in calcium.   So far no vine borers, and we picked 2 zucchini so far.

Our outdoor kitties all take to the wooded area as soon as the sun gets hot, but I am keeping their dry food dish full (they come out and nibble) and refill  their waterer full of chilled water a couple times a day so it stays reasonably cool (and does not grow a green coating, which can't be too healthy).  I made them a tent by draping  a bedspread over a couple of chairs and leaving the sides open for breezes.  Glad to say I have spotted kitties lounging there, laying next to the auxiliary water dish.   We have had some hot days lately, even by Ga standards.  You know its summer when 90 degrees seems cool...LOL...

:0327:  Y'all have had it soooo hot down SE.  Meanwhile, this May has been the longest sustained COLD...SNOW...GRAUPEL....HAIL...and a day or two each week of a partially sunny day.  May is a variable month in the high country but this year, :frozen:   Our furnace is STILL running.  Barely above freezing last few nites.

My SonInLaw told DD2 to check on us in CO.  He'd heard of lots of bad weather/tornadoes.  She called and we're  :scratchhead:   What tornadoes?  But I looked things up and ......oh. ...19 or so tornadoes lately.  But they're all in the plains...."low" lands.  But for a weather, news, data person like me - how did I miss that?  I knew about Jeeper's Ohio/Ind storms but missed CO???  We CAN have tornadoes way up here but they're smaller and less wide-spread damage.  Plenty damage for who's ever under them tho.

Tums ..aka: calcium for blossom end rot in zukes?  Hmmm.  I tried all kinds of things for my grande zuke PLANTS.....but no complete zukes.  Frustrating to waste garden space, attention, water and no veggie.  Perhaps that would have worked??  Thanks, Kappy.  I'll keep it in mind.

Cut worms....we used to push a soup can [ both ends removed]  into the ground around some plants to keep cutworms away.  [before the plant gets too big, of course]   Half the can under ground and half above.  Can't swear by it, so long ago.  But I think it worked.

MtRider  ....yep, cloudy and not warm out there....

Ugh, now I have to 'wheel and deal' with the furniture guy. I just told him what I wanted and he is going to write it up and send me the cost. Gulp. Since I'm going to get a whole bedroom set and a dining room table I'm thinking a 10% discount and free shipping. What do you all think??? It's so scary. Please hold my hand!
