DIY TV Hack

Recommended Posts

TV isn’t a priority for me.  I rarely watch it. But DH likes to have it on for “white noise”.  He was raised with it, I didn’t even see a TV until the moon landing, and then, my eyes wouldn’t adjust to see the picture. It looked like a bunch of jumbled greys. 🙄

We all know how much the providers charge every month. DH got the Amazon FireStick. One time payment and that’s it.  ($50-60). We used it for a while, sometimes it would freeze up during a movie, buffering.  Then, after the Net Nutrality vote, several of the apps quit. He got a DragonBox, better, but would freeze occasionally.  We watch the local news on it, without commercials, it just goes blank during commercial breaks.  Then, he found an app that has almost all the new and old movies and shows on it.

It streams off the internet, no TV provider needed.

I found a ‘hack’ for the FireStick, that allowed me to install it on it. I can now take the stick with me and play almost anything Mom might want to see.

If you have an Android, it’s called MegaBoxHD. To install it on the stick, you can find the info at hackmykodi . com

THANK YOU!  My son and DIL canceled their cable TV and got a Fire Stick last month. I haven't heard them say if theirs freezes up or not but I'll pass along the info just incase or for future reference.

I'm going to get one when I move. I've seen them on sale on Amazon for as little as $29.99. I think that's without the Alexa voice remote add on though. I'm going to go ahead and pick one up then. Target and Best Buy also sells them.

We don't have the fancy phones, tablets etc. so we use streams from news channels and Amazon Prime as well as YouTube.  Don't miss cable much at all!  We get our weather alerts from our NOAA radio that we have set form a distance of about 80 miles so we can "see it coming".

I know I won't miss cable when I move. Kindle Fire with Prime will be my source. I'll probably add the Brit Box channel for a few bucks a month. I really do enjoy British TV. Especially series like Shetland and Vera. Also I'll get to see Coronation street and East Enders and all of Ballykissangel. And the Victorian era shows.  I watch a lot of Brit shows on Youtube.

Me too Miki. I love "that bucket woman!"  It's bouquet Richard.  :grinning-smiley-044:

One of the few series I've watched all the way through and still wouldn't mind watching again.  :coffeescreen:

My D-ex bought the series for me a loooong time ago. I think it's the only complete series of anything I have.

I've been binge watching, "Cant Pay, We'll Take It Away on Youtube. Wow. If you are behind on a debt, after its gone through the court system, guys will come to your house unannounced and are authorized to remove anything you own to recoup the debt amount. They are authorized to walk in your home or break in if necessary. They have "a writ of the high court". I guess it's something like a subpoena here only worse. These aren't harden criminals either. They are ordinary people who owe someone money. That wouldn't fly here in America...someone probably wouldn't come out of the house alive. Just sayin'.

In one episode they evicted a family with two kids for non-payment of rent. The toddler was on a ventilator and had to go stay at the hospital for two weeks because after the eviction they were homeless. I've seen a few evictions where children were involved. But some of them are scammers and deadbeats. Fortunately, the guys are very nice and polite. At least the ones on TV.

Think our welfare system is bad? Well it is but nothing as bad as what it is in England. Youtube search 'council housing UK' and a lot of shows will pop up. Language is very rough though!

No offence to the Brits!  We have plenty of issues here too. Plenty.
