To pluck or not to pluck

I pulled the toothbrush out of my mouth and leaned closer to the mirror, my jaw hanging stupidly open. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I turned my head this way and that, my eyes narrowing in disbelief. It wasn't the little dribble of toothpaste, snaking its way down my chin, that had my stunned attention. It was one silver hair just above my left temple.   Have you seen those commercials? "I want laugh lines." "I want more laugh lines."   I agree with the principle. Gra

Spring Fling! (and more)

The ....things....I ordered came in. WOO HOO!!! Now I have to box up and ship the spring fling items. Ready to ship out on Monday! Can you say WOO HOO? I thought you could!   I packed the box, and then -- it wouldn't all FIT, so I unpacked the box, and then repacked another box. It wouldn't all FIT, so I unpacked the box, looked at what I was sending, looked throuigh all my boxes and went with a BIGGER BOX....it all fit. WOO HOO. I had to use a little survival tool as packing material. *grin*

A Wee Bit Weary...

This morning I feel a wee bit weary, it's been 'coming on' for several days. That feeling of drudgery for things that normally make me smile. It blossomed into full fruition this morning when I needed to make biscuits. I just didn't want to do it.   I thought wistfully of the days when every weekend I opened a bag of those lovely little frozen biscuits and set them effortlessly on the cookie sheet. Then, I regretted the fact that I had thawed out a turkey to bake today. My idea of cann

Rain, rain and more rain

It has rained and it has poured here today. Everyone keeps saying we need the rain...but, we're all secretly wishing the sunshine would get back here quick... after all, that's why we live in California right?   I spent way too many hours holed up in a classroom with a lotta kidlets that needed to be outside. Glad to get home and curl up with something hot to drink and my computer.   I did purchase some sore throat lozenges to add to the medical stash and I picked up a four month supply o

Heat Wave Part II

Oh wow, we had a beautiful day today. It got up to 39 DEGREES!!!!! Everyone was running around in t-shirts. It was as balmy as a tropical day in paradise. After the rough and tough winter we have been enduring, it is a gift. We haven't see these temps since early November (thank you, God).   Being so nice out, I was looking at the balcony we have outside that overlooks the lake. Drip, drip, drip. Hmm...this got me thinking.   We have been unable to access the balcony for a few months

1) The heart of a woman

This is a journey of discovery. That we would discover who God meant us to be.   What does it mean to be a woman? What is my calling in life? What does God value? What does He want from me? What do I want? And is that okay?   We are not carbon copies of each other. Not at all. God loves diversity and Has fashioned each of us uniquely and well. There is one thing all women share, and that is a feminine heart. We have to start there because as the scriptures tell us, the heart is the cente

Picking Up the Pieces; Resolving Clutter

This was written in response to a friend asking me for advice on how to get organized. At first, I had to laugh...then reality hit....I can do this.   ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~   It hit me around the end of the year how truly messy my house was. For many reasons, things have gotten stacked, shoved, piled, mounded, and shuffled to where I couldn't tell up from down, right from left, let alone in some cases, what was clean or dirty. This is such a far cry from how I wanted things to look, from how t

Tortilla Soup

This yummy, lo-carb, high-taste soup is tasty and can be enjoyed with or without tortilla chips...tho you might want to call it Mexican Soup then. I pulled everything from my pantry and home-canned items. A wonderful use of those jars of veggies!   Ingredients:   Stockpot 2 C tomato sauce 2 C crushed or diced tomatoes 1 C salsa 2 C corn (canned or frozen) 1 tsp basil 1 tsp oregano 1/2 onion 2 tsp garlic 2 C chicken broth 2 C veggie broth 2 cans kidney or

Money-Saving Laundry Soap

I'm all for saving a buck, but this is incredible!   This recipe for homemade laundry soap makes approximately 4.5 gallons.   1 five gallon bucket 1 bar Fels Naptha Laundry Soap (Zote or Ivory can also be used) 1 cup Borax (blue green box) 1 cup Arm & Hammer Washing Soda (yellow box) 4 gallons of water + 1 qt   Grate Fels Naphta bar into about 8 cups of water in a saucepan, leaving about 4" of room at the top.   Melt soap into water. Faith & Provision

Originally written in May of 2008.   When bad things happen all in succession, it makes me wonder – it makes me wonder many things - but also realize where my faith lies. It is so easy to focus on circumstance and forget about who our Abba is – that He is the ultimate Provider.   Over the past two weeks, the front and back brakes have needed repairing on one of our cars, we paid thousands of dollars out of savings for our sidewalk construction bill and our washing machine died - just th

Protection & Covenant

This was written in April 2008. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~   It is a Jewish practice to put mezzuzahs up on every doorpost as a reminder that Adonnai watches over us and keeps us. In the Christian world, the equivalent would be to anoint or pray over something or spiritually cleanse a house or property. I recently learned a very tangible lesson regarding this.   Last spring we began having drain issues. The problem would come and go, and we thought we had it licked until last August when I found lit

The Blessing of Poverty

This was written last March, but it remains as poignant as ever. ~ ~ ~ ~ This weekend I had two vendor tables at a benefit for a local organization which supports Israel. It was a lovely thing, great dancing, a lovely lunch, but it was not held where the Jewish population normally resides – it was held across town in a Christian building, for it was intended to be an 'inter-faith' outreach/ benefit, and the building rental was free. Vendors were asked to donate a percentage of their e

Why We Need Hope

This was actually written a year ago, but I found it. It seemed appropriate to post here.   Blessings!   ~ ~ ~ ~ ~   Over the past week, I've been dealing with some pretty intense things. I've had to file legal papers, deal with attorneys, and get ready for a major conference. I've also had to wrestle with words and writing things that will become part of public record and influence someone's life for some time, perhaps forever.   As I was reflecting and writing this week, I knew

How cool will it be to just go outside and pick a peach off the tree and eat it?? Or to just walk outside and pick 7-8 peaches and make up a batch of peach jam,, or peach syrup,,, the list is endless. Gosh I hope one peach tree does me!   I have no idea how many raspberries a few stalks will give you but the idea of getting a nice beautiful bowlful suits m

1954? who knew?

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."   -- The "godless" Pledge of Allegiance, as it was recited by generations of school children, before Congress inserted a religious phrase, "under God," in 1954.

Captivating, unveiling the mystery of a woman's soul...

Song, a Psalm of David. (Psalm 108:1)   My heart is steadfast, O God; I will sing, I will sing praises, even with my soul.   Hello Dear Friend! You are welcome to journey with me through Captivating, "Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul" (co-authored by John and Stasi Eldridge)   Every woman was once a little girl. And every little girl holds in her heart her most precious dreams. She longs to be swept up into a romance, to play an irreplaceable role in a great adventure, t

The cat who can

">   This is Burnie, the cat who cans. LOL He likes it when I organize storage or clean shelves. He thinks I do it so he can have a new spot. Aside from this, Burnie is the cat who follows me everywhere and is involved in anything that I do in this house. As you see, I was moving over the pears to make room for some apple sauce here. But Burnie had other ideas.   I should add here that Burnie is really named General Ambrose Burnside. (My husband named our cats after Civil

Trying Again

Ok, so my computer ate yesterday's post. I am keeping this short and posting it fast just to be safe.   I did go pick up my order yesterday at Sam's Club and it was a walk in the park. I breezed in, paid, breezed out, and loaded my vehicle. I am so in love with this feature. Wow. It just saved me several hours of my life.   Watching the jobs reports come in this morning. Eek. Pretty scary. Seems like the acceleration is really picking up.   Today is a good day at Chickadee Lane

Graduation Day

Today is going to be an exciting day for us!   My dear Husband is graduating from the Police Academy today!   For as long as we've been married (almost 14 years!) he has been in the construction field, in one way or another. Most of those years he has been a Building/Home Inspector... which he is *good* at (he got Inspector of the Year in 2005) and which he loves. But of course the last couple of years, the construction field has really suffered... and combined with a God-led change in our

Routine Requirements

I seriously need to develop some routines into my life. I tend to resist the constraints of routine. I like to live in a free and flexible manner. But, although it is appealing, it is not necessarily wise or healthy.   No matter that I don't have to set an alarm clock, catch the school bus, clock in at an office or have dinner promptly at six...there should still be some Routine Requirments in my life. I have the greatest of intentions. But, I don't always follow through. ::   Our swe

Sadness and Loss

What do I do? What do I say? THAT phone call came this morning around 6:30am. My sis calling to tell me Dad died last night. If you saw my prayer requests you may remember he suffered severe dementia, and had just gone to a care facility Monday. I feel lost & conflicted--I miss him so much, though in truth I have been missing him for a couple years, as his decline got worse and worse. He used to have 'moments' on the phone where he was Dad again...and I hoped I could reach him so he kn
