Ripped off Recipes 4

Darlene's English Muffins   With the price of english muffins getting high (Thomas english muffins are $3.99), I decided to make some of my own today. I've made this recipe many times in the past and it's a great and simple english muffin recipe. It's Alton Brown's recipe.   1/2 cup non-fat powdered milk 1 tablespoon sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon shortening 1 cup hot water 1 envelope dry yeast 1/8 teaspoon sugar 1/3 cup warm water 2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted No

Blackberry Jam!

I was looking through the grocery store flyers and spotted a nice sale at Sprouts Market (sort of a health food/Organic ) grocery. They had fresh blackberries for 88 cents /6oz box. I figured it was worth a road trip to the next town over, to visit the place. About 20$ of berries later, I have managed to make jam! Do you have any idea how long it has been since I made jam? Literally about 8-9 yrs, and before that, more like 20 yrs. Yes this is only the 3rd time I have ever made jam. And I

The Shed

It is raining and I have separated 3 does that are pregnant from the rest of the flock. I needed to build them a quick shed so off to the Shed I go.   I have a tote filled with tarps... as best as I can, I buy brown, green, camo when available. I don't need blue or red brightly flashing... "Hey look here!!!"   I do have silver tarps for reflecting the heat but that is another story... so I have a tote(s) filled with tarps of all sizes.   I have several ways of securing these tarps. Ripped Off Recipes 3

There are two types of clam chowder, the one most are familiar is Boston or New England which is the white and there are many recipes for it, the other is rarely seen any more and is called Manhattan Clam Chowder and is red.   When I was a child many restaurants served both but I guess the red fell out of favor.   I personally prefer Manhattan Clam Chowder and after searching on the net for recipes and trying many of them, this is by far the best one I have ever had.   Manhattan Clam Ch

I saw Dr. Jeremiah Thursday night...

He said there were nearly 10,000 people there. All I know is that when my husband and I arrived a half-hour early, we had to sit in the bleachers near the top, because there were so many people already there.   Everywhere we looked, there were people... Christians, mostly... black, white, Asian, Hispanic... every color and shape and age... worshiping together in that auditorium.   And when the lady behind me, who was chattering to her friends above *her*, mentioned how amazing and enc

Peanut Butter Powder

This week the kids and I did an experiment with Peanut Butter Powder. Some months ago, I had purchased this...   http://beprepared.com/product.asp_Q_pn_E_FS D140_A_name_E_Peanut+Butter+Powder   I decided it was time to open it and see how we liked, what it tasted like, what in the world you did with it!   The instructions on the #10 can say: Mix 1 TBSP of Powder with 1 Tsp of water. Add a small amount of sugar for flavor. Add a drop of oil for creaminess.   First, we all tasted

On Tuesday, Richard said: 'Ya ought to do something with that chicken in the basement fridge. What day did we butcher them?'   Me: Uh, I don't know. Tuesday? (my day off)   Him: A week ago?   Me: Nooo! (hmmm) What day is it?   Him: Tuesday!   Me: Oh....No, it wasn't a week ago, but I thought we did them on my day off. We butchered chickens and THEN I went to work? Musta been Friday or Saturday. <shrug>       Then I remembered that a lady had shown up to buy some pullet

Exhausted but not beaten

"I'm tired and I'm living in the last half of my life." Those words aren't mine. They belong to my former English Composition professor and they appeared in an essay he wrote about sitting in a cafe in Paris contemplating his growing older. For some reason they stuck in my head.   And for another reason, they sometimes pop into my head. Like today.   It's been a rough month. Sjogren's Syndrome makes me tired enough--and April is Sjogren's Awareness month, by the way. So I'm going to

So, yesterday I felt rather like death warmed over...the cold I thought was gone, came back and I felt awful all day. Managed even to sleep a good part of the afternoon, thanks to DH watching the Monkeys. I tried hitting the sack early, but it didn't really happen, but I wasn't up any later than normal I guess.   Early this morning, after a pleasant wake-up with DH, I snuggled back into the pile of blankets, seeking another hour or more before the Monkeys awoke. Suddenly, I hear a wee "C

Dream Whip!   Dream Whip is a whipped topping like Whipped Cream or Cool Whip. Mixed with cold water.... use your solar cooker at night to make cold water, ice even! or wet burlap and cover a frame and put water in it to keep it cold on the north side of the house.   Two tablespoons has 10 calories, comes in a box and stores almost forever as long as the package isn't opened. I would say it stores forever but forever is a very long time.   "Dream Whip can be also used as an ingredient i

When it Rains ( in Louisiana) It Pours

What a day !   Fridays are always a busy day for me. I get to work early, make some coffee and honker down for the day. I won't return until Tuesday so I make sure everything is closed out for the week.   I place pending orders, do accounts payable, notify any customers of items to be picked up and have the cleaning girl in. Being tax season I am also working on that, now at a more accelerated pace. Being First Communion and Easter season I am scurrying to make last minute adjustments an

T ake My Advice

Last night I finally got around to reformating my computer.   With all of the junk that accumilates over the months it is reccomended to reformat at least once a year. I clean out everything daily. I run scans, have firewalls, antivirus, ad adware protection, etc. I do most of the updates.   Still, over time you still end up with unwantd files, broken links, registry problems. Yes, it is a slight pain having to reinstall all of your programs and the numerous updates but you end up wit

Aslan Has Arrived!

Aslan has arrived! After what seemed like an eternity of waiting, Aslan has been safely delivered to our family!   It was love at first sight of course, but the last couple of days have been filled with wonderful puppy love!   He is a puppy with purpose! Yesterday we signed him up for the Puppy Training Classes at the pet store. They start the week that he turns 10 weeks. So, we've got about 3 more weeks to do the best we can with his very determined little self.   His markings a

My First Attemp at Blogging

Blogs are all the rage these days.   Somehow the thought of me having one has never appealed to me. I have only recently even began to read blogs. One has to be extremely interesting to keep my attention. I guess it is the same as reading someone's newspaper column.   I sometimes wonder if those who have blogs and write well have a hidden desire to be discovered as writers. Or are blogs sort of like writing in a journal or a dairy, except making those thoughts public. Whatever the reasons

My Almost Hawaiian Vacation

Today started as another ordinary Minnesota day.   We have been slowly warming up to springtime. Our Northland weather systems have a distinct reluctance to sacrifice the familiarity of snow and ice and refuse to transition into spring willingly. Two steps forward and three steps back, spring comes peeking around the corner eventually but winter usually has to be dragged kicking and screaming out the door first.   This day was one of the good ones. Temps were holding steady around 30 d
