  1. Arby, I didn't see your post until this morning. I grew up in the LA area but have relatives all over the southern and northern parts of the state. A brother and his family and also cousins, etc. in Southern CA. Another brother and his family in the Sacramento area where my nephew is the Sacramento Co. Sheriff. Then I have a niece with her family in San Francisco and of course, number 1 is our daughter in SF. I moved to Iowa in 1968 (yes I am old) and love it here....except I'm no longer crazy about winter....to be honest, I pretty much hate it! I have made the trip from CA to Iowa so many times (just like in the movie, by plane, train and automobile) I think I could do it in my sleep. My first trip Mom was pregnant with me, the 2nd I was 5 months old and it has never ended.
  2. I do! As soon as I saw the title I started humming that darned tune and it will probably be in my mind all day! Have a safe trip!
  3. She's registered so she has a la la name but we'll call her Lucy. We name everything with the letter corresponding with the year and 12 is the letter L. If her calf is a girl we'll call her Lollipop, a boy, I think, will be Lancelot.
  4. DH and I drove 70 miles today to buy a bred Jersey cow. She's to calve on Sept. 15th but we hope NOT to milk her. We're too old to start that again UNLESS things really do get bad and then we'll be glad to have to milk twice a day. I mainly wanted her just in case. What we're planning, if all stays good, is to buy 2 or 3 more calves and let her raise them. Anyway, here's a picture. Isn't she pretty???
  5. I'm headed to CA again in Oct. dogmom4. DD is getting married on the 26th. First we'll go to the L.A. area for my brothers 70th birthday party and then up to Sac. for a couple of days and then on over to S.F. for daughters wedding. I picked our 1st watermelon today. Yum, was it ever good. A little warm though as I brought it in out of the sum and we chomped into it immediately. The rest is cooling for later. NOW it's time to show pictures of what we're pulling out of those gardens after all our hard work this summer. So here is the watermelon. It's just as red and pretty as it looks. BTW, in the background is my pork tenderloin. Just out of the pressure canner and pinging as I write.
  6. I put them in tossed salads but then I put everything but the kitchen sink in salads.
  7. If food does get scarce in this country, how many of you know anything about foraging? I really don't but I know you can eat cattails, milkweed, etc. which we have lots of with the creek and pond. So, I looked up some recipes on the internet for those 2 things. I don't think I have any interest in it unless I'm hungry and food is scarce but I printed off some recipes "just in case". I know you can eat lily bulbs also but know it has to be certain ones so I need to look that up too. I'm thinking more of winter eating than summer. What else is there we could forage in winter climates? Any ideas?
  8. The blurb will give some information about the seed you're looking at and if it's drought resistant it will probably state it. Afterall, they want to tell you all it's good points so you'll buy it!
  9. You will be busy but what fun! Have a great time Mt. Ridger.
  10. Good Morning Everyone Just in from my walk and I was almost chilly. It's 66 but that's 20 degrees cooler than when I've walked for the last couple of weeks. Oh my, is it ever nice though. It's also overcast with a 30% chance of a tenth of an inch of rain. Darn, I should have done a rain dance while I was out there!!! Not a whole lot going on here today. I need to get ready for church before long. I think I'll check on the beets and see if they'll be ready to can tomorrow. DGC will probably be over sometime today. Haven't seen them for a couple of days so one or the other will be calling to come visit. Hope you all have a good day!
  11. 26 packages, 2 in each package, of enchiladas for DH and DS.
  12. Glad you're enjoying your birthday!
  13. We've spent almost $40,000 putting in a corn crop on 100 acres. That does NOT include tractor gas, repairs, etc. It is simply for seed, fertilizer and herbicides. If we go another week w/o rain we'll lose some of our crop. If we go two weeks w/o rain our whole crop will be gone. We have NEVER had a crop failure in this part of the state BUT this year looks alot different from the norm. Those that didn't borrow money to put in a crop will lose all they've spent because of not having insurance. The big guys that borrow boatloads of money have had to buy insurance to cover what they've borrowed. Corn and soybean prices are going up like crazy and if this drought keeps up they'll do nothing but go higher. The price per bushel, just today, for corn jumpmed $.49 and soybeans were up $.54. $7.11 a bushel corn and $15.39 a bushel for beans is unbelievable. If you need it, unless we start having monsoons in the midwest, you better be buying. With no rain there is also no hay but you might wait on buying beef. If this keeps up beef producers will start liquidating (some already have) and you should see decent sales before long. I would think, although I don't know as much about pork, that with all the confinement buildings pigs are fed grain so with the prices I've quoted there may be hog producers liquidating too. It's a rough time for so many right now, all over this country, so prepare what you can and breathe. We have got to keep as calm as we can and just take it a day at a time.
  14. I missed 3. The state that was not one of the original 13. The number of years a senator serves and what is not a right in the Preamble. Cool test, thanks gofish.
  15. Thanks Snowmom, I hope you and everyone here has a great 4th. We're staying home and inside enjoying the air-conditioning on this 93 degree afternoon. Sooooooooo, glad we're not having to go someplace!!!
  16. How right you are!!! In one of my survival modes a few years ago I thought I'd wash my hair with the hot water in the hose. Wow, that water was so hot I about scalded myself. Good lesson learned!
  17. Morning everyone Boy, what a pretty morning it is. I've been out getting a few things done because it's to hit 94 with about 80% humidity sometime today. That's miserable but thankfully we have electricity and air conditioning so I'll just hibernate inside. How are people w/o electricity handling this heat and humidity? I do feel for them and hope they have generators, family/friends or someplace they can go. It's just downright dangerous! I got my mile walked and have things watered. I see I have a tomato turning that yellowish color that means it's ripening. I can hardly wait! On my walk this morning I saw a duck with 6 half grown ducklings swimming in the creek. I'd taken some bread to feed the fish so I fed the ducks too. Gosh they're cute and they loved the bread. Well, time for breakfast. You all have a great day and let us know how you're all doing with the weather in your neck of the woods. Stay safe!
  18. I canned them yesterday and it worked great. I opened a pint for dinner today and they were delicious.
  19. Gosh, it's already the last week of June. Where do the days go???? We're busy around here with gardening, haying and just the typical stuff to keep the farm going. We finally had 1 1/2" of rain last week. It's not near enough but hopefully enough to keep things growing until the next measureable rain. We that don't irrigate are at the mercy of Mother Nature. She, though, has always been good to us so I'm not complaining, just sayin'. I canned 11 pints of black raspberries yesterday. The bottom broke out of one jar. What a mess but really not as bad as I thought the syrupy stuff would be. In all my canning it's only the 2nd time it's happened and thankfully both broke off while in the canner. I keep thinking of those in the stormy areas and the burning areas. Stay safe everyone and know many prayers are being said for all of you!!! How are the rest of you doing and what's going on in your world? Hope you have a great day!!!
  20. I'm no help Jori. Hopefully someone will show up that can help you. I do know I've done the same thing and ended up tossing it for safety sake. I know from experience how sick you can get from bad chicken. Think KFC!!!
  21. The Ball Blue Book has a recipe for canning black raspberries in syrup. Has anyone tried it? I think I'd like to use a light syrup but would sure appreciate some input if anyones has any. Thanks!
  22. Yep, October 26th is the official date for her marriage. How does it work that you have so few really scheduled things going on during the year and yet they always happen at the same time. Guess there's no use
  23. My cousin, who's like a sister, lost her husband to cancer last week. I've been in Des Moines helping her and just got home. DH asked if I wanted to go out for dinner but being gone so long I simply wanted to stay home. So, I said I'll look and see what I can throw together quick. We had stuffed bell peppers, corn, coleslaw and pumpkin bread. He'd picked raspberries this morning so we ate those too on top of vanilla ice cream. He commented on how good a dinner it was and that it was much better than cleaning up to go out to eat. I laughed telling him everything but the ice cream and raspberries were from last fall. His comment after thinking about it.......It was an absolutely delicious free meal. I realized he was right. All of what we had could have been left to rot in the garden last fall but instead, as so many of us here do, we canned/froze/stored it and are still eating on it. Life is good!
