  5. I am seeing more and more stories like these. It seems to me that if the Bird Flu ever hits us most of the action in coping with it will be done on a local level. I think this is very encouraging. I think after Katrina people see that they need to rally together to take care of themselves instead of looking to the federal government to bail them out. 8. Rant alert! Rant alert! Unbelievable! A few days ago I posted an article here about a Columbus, Ohio neighborhood making plans to deal with bird flu if it hit their area. Today at work I saw that one of my coworkers had hung that article up on the bulletin board in the break room. I was curious as to who the person was who hung it so I thought I would ask around. The first person I asked was my boss. I asked if he put up the bird flu article. He said, "what's that?". I asked him if he meant to tell me he had never heard of the bird flu and he said, "no, why? what is it?" I was just floored!

  13. It's surprising to me how many people don't keep any extra food in their homes. I'm aware of at least three that I know. One is an elderly man. He always eats away from home. I casually asked him once if he didn't have any food at home. He said he has several jugs of ice water in his refrigerator and 4 small cans of peas. That's it! Since then he has given me one of his cans of peas because, he said he only got them because they were on sale and 4 cans was too much. I was exasperated. I tried to get him to keep it. I tried to tell him he needed to keep food at home in case he were to become ill and not be able to get out. I made no headway. Very frustrating! Also, I might add, he is a bachelor with no family nearby. Missie
  14. I have said a prayer for your Mom. I know that even if I don't know you or your mother personally that God is listening and knows who I am praying for. The more prayers the better! Missie (formerly from the middle of the mitten)
  15. I thought the flag idea was interesting. Missie

  17. All I can say is I hope something like that never happens because, living in a small apartment in the city, I don't think I am ever going to feel any real degree of confidence about my preparations. The storage space issue is bad enough, but I'm really worried about security. I bought a stun gun, but it really scares me. I'm always afraid it is going to go off accidentally. But here's where I really need some help...I have two apartment doors. One leads to the fire escape and the other leads to the inner apartment building hallway. The one that leads to the outside I have one of those sticks that you prop up under the doorknob to keep the door from opening. But...on the door out to the hallway my door opens outward into the hall. I don't know what to do to make it safe. All someone who really wanted in would have to do is to remove the two bolt-thingies that hold the door in. Any suggestions? The angry, hungry mob thing really scares me! Missie
  18. It's overcast and cool and wet. I love it! Missie
  19. That is totally gross...ewww! I sent the story to my mom and she said it wasn't a very nice thing to send on Mother's Day! Ha ha! Missie
  20. I feel so badly for you. Please know that there are others out there thinking of you and your family. I have said a prayer for you. I know God is listening. Please stay strong. Missie
  21. I didn't notice anything like that when I was at the grocery store this morning. Missie
  22. Boy do I know what you're talking about!! After getting the stares and "she's crazy" looks once, I can no longer go to the grocery store and really fill up. Instead of going to one store and filling up, I go to several stores over the course of several days with smaller purchases. For instance today on my way to work I stopped off at the grocery for some rice, vegetables, and a couple of large bags of pasta. On the way home from work I can go to a different store or even the same one again and pick up more stuff. It's not just the funny looks I might get from people, it's also that if Missie
  23. Luna Mother! You should have watched the whole thing if you were only put off by the "drug company" commercial. Those Hanso Foundation commercials do come across as pharmaceutical ads but they are, in fact, just a clever fake. They are actually commercials for a fictional company that is at the center of the mystery on the television show "Lost". If you watched "Fatal Contact" you would have noticed that "Lost" and it's upcoming season finale were featured heavily. The Hanso ads are really a clever marketing scheme to appeal to us die-hard "Losties". They have set up a whole fake website and the telephone number featured in the commercials dials in to a creepy, surreal voice mail with interactive features. I'm not sure if I have explained this very well. Maybe you have to be a fan of the show to understand, but the main thing is that the commercials weren't for pharmaceuticals, they were just a fun little teaser for "Lost". I'm sorry you missed it. It was done pretty well even if it was awfully grim. Missie
