  1. Cepe mushroms, also known as Porcini, that we found this weekend.
  2. I bought 200 kilos (440 pounds) of potatoes today for just over thirty euros (about forty dollars).
  3. I love Homesteading today, but my computer never lets me go there, anymore. I can only go if I'm at another computer or using a wireless connection from someplace else.
  4. Just hope you don't get a thief who tortures you to find the location of the loot.
  5. Or string the dried slices together for Christmas decorations...maybe with connamon sticks.
  6. I just slice them whole, peel and all. We eat them plain, or crumble them into porridge or bake them into crumbles. Sometimes I crumble up a few and toss them into quince or apple jelly while boiling. You can also grind them up and use the powder in milkshakes and smoothies or as part of the flour in cakes.
  7. Try sprinkling the orange slices with cinnamon sugar.
  8. I do it like this... I cheat and buy already-frozen patties, then thaw them and form each one into four little ones, which I fr lightly and then put into jars. I put ten into each pint-sized jar (half a pound), and then I put in a heaping teaspoon of dry onion soup mix and top the jar with water and can them (90 minutes at ten pounds). The patties hold together very well and taste delicious. I usually use the fat from the jar to make a roux with flour and then add the liquid from the jar along with either water, canned milk, or red wine and then serve them with this gravy. (also good on cheeseburger pizza with pickles and ketchup)

So I guess it would be possible to put a layer of cans on the floor (or on a plwood sheet with lattes under in, for air) and then put a sheet of plywood over that and top it with the boxsprings and the mattress. You'd went the boxsprings or some slats of wood, instead of just the mattress, to keep a bit of air flowing and to not trap the heat and moisture from your bodies on the mattress, I imagine.
  10. I have big open beams, and I nail giant nails into them and hang up stuff in big plastic supermarket bags. It doesn't hide anything, but it sure does hold a lot of storage out of the way.
  11. A discussion on balancing the human need to be social animals with the one to be wary of others would be interesting. Pull the wagons into a circle....or mix with others and learn from them?
  12. Suicide and euthanasia, just in case.
  13. In order to hear if anyone comes into the house if I happen to be upstairs, I hang windchimes up on the ceiling on the inside of the door. The cans at the windows are a good idea.
  14. I buy wheatberries from the feedstore, and then soak them and cook them til just tender in the pressure cooker, then dehydrate them. Good for tossing into soups.
