  1. I know that our school system wouldn’t shut down for two weeks just for prevention. It took an act of G-d to get them to shut down one day a couple of years ago when we had norovirus roll through. And they only did it because so many staff were getting sick as well. Too much lost ADA.... https://saigoneer.com/saigon-health/18327-vietnam-continues-nationwide-school-shutdown-due-to-covid-19
  2. This is just a small section of a 16 page paper... ACE2 Expression in Kidney and Testis May Cause Kidney and Testis Damage After 2019-nCoV Infection https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.02.12.20022418v1.full.pdf ACE2 (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme 2) has been shown to be one of the major receptors that mediate the entry of 2019-nCoV into human cells, which also happens in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS). Several researches have indicated that some patients have abnormal renal function or even kidney damage in addition to injury in respiratory system, and the related mechanism is unknown. This arouses our interest in whether coronavirus infection will affect the urinary and male reproductive systems. Here in this study, we used the online datasets to analyze ACE2 expression in different human organs. The results indicate that ACE2 highly expresses in renal tubular cells, Leydig cells and cells in seminiferous ducts in testis. Therefore, virus might directly bind to such ACE2 positive cells and damage the kidney and testicular tissue of patients. Our results indicate that renal function evaluation and special care should be performed in 2019-nCoV patients during clinical work, because of the kidney damage caused by virus and antiviral drugs with certain renal toxicity. In addition, due to the potential pathogenicity of the virus to testicular tissues, clinicians should pay attention to the risk of testicular lesions in patients during hospitalization and later clinical follow-up, especially the assessment and appropriate intervention in young patients' fertility.
  3. Ambergris, Do you think they actually would work?
  4. So what do you all think of this? It’s a DIY for face masks. Think it would work? I’ve seen reports about how there will be (or maybe in China there already is) a shortage of face masks. There are already some local stores in my area that have signs up saying they have no masks.
  5. https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-to-evacuate-some-americans-from-diamond-princess-cruise-ship-11581733214 U.S. to Evacuate Some Americans From Diamond Princess Cruise Ship TRAVIS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif.—The U.S. government is preparing to evacuate American citizens from aboard the Diamond Princess cruise ship, the site of the biggest outbreak of the novel coronavirus outside China, according to an official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About 380 Americans and their families on the ship, docked in Yokohama, Japan, will be offered seats on two State Department-organized planes flying back to the U.S., said Henry Walke, director of the CDC’s Division of Preparedness and Emerging Infections, on Friday. They are arriving in the U.S. as early as Sunday, he said. A CDC team is on the ground in Japan to assess the health of the cruise ship passengers, Dr. Walke said. Those with a fever, cough or other symptoms won’t be allowed on the flights. Evacuees will likely arrive first at Travis Air Force Base near Sacramento, Calif., where they will undergo additional health screenings, said Dr. Walke. Some will likely remain at Travis to undergo a mandatory quarantine, which will likely be 14 days, he said. Others may be moved to Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio to quarantine. Travis is already the quarantine site for roughly 230 people evacuated earlier this month from Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, and Dr. Walke spoke in a town hall meeting with those people on Friday. These evacuees will be kept separate from the fresh group arriving from the ship, he said. The current evacuee group from Wuhan is being housed in a hotel on the base, while those from the ship will stay in different lodgings about 200 meters away, he said. Both will have temporary fencing encircling the grounds and U.S. Marshals paroling the perimeter. “We’re not going to mix anyone,” Dr. Walke said during the Friday meeting, prompting some laughter. “This group is going to stay within this fence. If we take another group, we are putting a fence up over there.” Between Japan and the U.S., “some preparations are going on but there are no details available for now,” said Keiichi Ishida, an official at the Japanese health ministry’s quarantine operation division, when asked about the evacuation plan.

  7. Finally....it was on my local news that the five suspected cases that were from Travis AFB came negative. Whew!
  8. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/backstories/870/ More cases on the cruise ship in Japan. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200212_37/ This is something about the 24 day incubation period...says there was one case. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200212_30/ A quarantine official has also been confirmed to have the new corona virus. The ministry says virus tests for 53 more people came back positive for 29 passengers and 10 crewmembers. They include a girl aged ten to nineteen-years-old, the first patient in this age bracket.
  9. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.02.06.20020974v1.full.pdf If you scroll to page four it has some interesting information: Abstract Background: Since December 2019, acute respiratory disease (ARD) due to 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) emerged in Wuhan city and rapidly spread throughout China. We sought to delineate the clinical characteristics of these cases. Methods: We extracted the data on 1,099 patients with laboratory-confirmed 2019-nCoV ARD from 552 hospitals in 31 provinces/provincial municipalities through January 29th, 2020. Results: The median age was 47.0 years, and 41.90% were females. Only 1.18% of patients had a direct contact with wildlife, whereas 31.30% had been to Wuhan and 71.80% had contacted with people from Wuhan. Fever (87.9%) and cough (67.7%) were the most common symptoms. Diarrhea is uncommon. The median incubation period was 3.0 days (range, 0 to 24.0 days). On admission, ground-glass opacity was the typical radiological finding on chest computed tomography (50.00%). Significantly more severe cases were diagnosed by symptoms plus reverse-transcriptase polymerase-chain-reaction without abnormal radiological findings than non-severe cases (23.87% vs. 5.20%, P<0.001). Lymphopenia was observed in 82.1% of patients. 55 patients (5.00%) were admitted to intensive care unit and 15 (1.36%) succumbed. Severe pneumonia was independently associated with either the admission to intensive care unit, mechanical ventilation, or death in multivariate competing-risk model (sub-distribution hazards ratio, 9.80; 95% confidence interval, 4.06 to 23.67). Conclusions: The 2019-nCoV epidemic spreads rapidly by human-to-human transmission. Normal radiologic findings are present among some patients with 2019-nCoV infection. The disease severity (including oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, blood leukocyte/lymphocyte count and chest X-ray/CT manifestations) predict poor clinical outcomes. medRxiv preprint doi: https://doi.org/10.1101/2020.02.06.20020974. 10. This was on my local news last night...they said the confirmed case was accidentally released and brought back but supposedly was not around any public at any time.

  12. This article says it originated in the United States. https://simran-spanish-influenza.weebly.com/origin-of-the-spanish-influenza.html This one says China. https://www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/1/140123-spanish-flu-1918-china-origins-pandemic-science-health/
  13. So, you remember the evacuees who were brought to Travis AFB a few days ago....this was just on my local news. Five people who were evacuated from Wuhan, China and quarantined at Travis Air Force Base have been confirmed "symptomatic" and transported to local hospitals, the CDC confirmed.
  14. They just did an update on our local news. 178 passengers landed late last night and are now being housed at Travis AFB and will be quarantined for 14 days from the time they left the Hubei district. One child on the flight had a fever on the plane and is at a local hospital being monitored. There were actually a total of 350 people brought out on two flights. The remaining people are being flown to Miramar Marine Corp Air Station. Hopefully everyone will stay well....
  15. Mt. Rider I’ve seen those numbers lately too. I had no idea they were so high.
  16. https://www.cnn.com/2020/02/04/asia/coronavirus-japan-cruise-intl-hnk/index.html [Tokyo (CNN)Japanese authorities are racing to contain a possible outbreak of the Wuhan coronavirus after it was revealed that an infected passenger flew into Tokyo and spent a few days aboard a Princess Cruises ship, forcing authorities to lock down the vessel and quarantine thousands of people on board. The ship, the Diamond Princess, ended its planned 14-day itinerary early and is currently docked off the coast of Yokohama, not far from the Japanese capital. Medical officials are going room-by-room to check each guests' temperature and medical condition, Japan's health ministry said in a statement. Several passengers have reported feeling ill, and the tests to check if they contracted the virus will take four to five hours, the ministry said. Of the 31 people who have been tested for the virus, 10 cases tested positive for the virus, Japan's Health Ministry said. Authorities are still waiting for the results of more than 100 other samples. Passengers and crew were initially required to stay on board until at least Tuesday night, but it appears they may be there longer. Japanese health officials said more passengers than expected need to be temporarily quarantined while being tested, and it could take another day to finish the screenings. ] This is part of the article...the part I highlighted is a bit concerning. Am I reading that right? 31 tested and 10 are positive?
  17. So...this morning the number of deaths was 305 and this evening it’s 362?
  18. I am not going to panic. I’ve already started looking at what we might need more of if we need to shelter in place. My job is unfortunately not a good one for social distancing, lol. I should put something on a loop that says “Cover your mouth when you cough.” Ever had a 4 year old stand right in front of you and sneeze and there’s no time to react? That’s my life. I’ve actually stayed fairly healthy this school year. I’ve only had to take 3 sick days...I wash hands repeatedly and wipe down my room every day. That being said my small program has had the flu A, impetigo and hand foot mouth roll through in the past three weeks because our kids have siblings in every school in the district and...we have visiting scholar families from many countries...including China (several of whom have come in the past month). So...yes...I will keep myself educated because it’s not just me...I have three family members in their 80’s and hubby with a compromised immune system who I wouldn’t want to bring home the germs.
  19. The first death outside of China has just happened (Philippines). I agree Mt.Rider that we probably have nothing to worry about with a good hospital system....but, just as you are the queen of scenarios , I am the queen of letting my imagination run wild...... As the California cases move north (Santa Clara) and get closer....and the government has decided to use Travis Air Force Base as one of the places to house people who have potentially been exposed....I’m having a hard time reining it in. Travis is a 15 minute drive from me. https://www.abc10.com/article/news/health/travis-air-force-base-coronavirus/103-0a2fc65f-9be1-4083-843d-06784634db95
  20. I don’t know. Looking at that link is really unnerving. When I saw it for the first time on Tuesday the number of cases was less than 7,000...today that number is over 14,000. The number of of deaths was 160...today it’s 304.
  21. First case of it in Northern California.
  22. This page is put out by John Hopkins. It seems to give numbers in real time around the world.... https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6
  23. I don’t want to be concerned but every time I read something I feel a little more concerned. I live in a very international community because of the local university and my classroom has kids from many other countries. Right now the preschool I work at has had a bug rolling through for the past two weeks that has made everyone sick (I’m home today with it)...we’ve had classes with as few as 6 kids...instead of 16. Our district finally put out a notice to all families that they have to have a doctors note to return to class and are cleaning our classrooms this weekend. We had one child return yesterday from China after being there for two weeks. Makes me really nervous. Why would China quarantine such a large city if the death toll is only 25? Is it because it’s happening faster than normal or perhaps those numbers aren’t true?
  24. What a beautiful baby boy!! So awesome that you rescued him...
