  1. My favorite backscratcher is the reverse end of a 13 knitting needle.
  2. I would have eaten and enjoyed it. A 3# roast that is frozen is not going to be warm the next morning and since you cooked it immediately, I don't see any problem.
  3. I have used canned tomatoes or tomato sauce in chili. Works. Just remember that canned tomato sauce will be sweet.
  4. Gunplumber, how would a male feel if a female said something like "well that beer belly is getting a little over the top" or "looks like you have dunlap disease"?
  5. HE said something like that. I do believe that something akin to "why would you say something like that?" and/or "why would that be any of your business?" would come out of my mouth but it wouldn't be so nice. Inappropriate to say the least. IF he was a close friend, he would be maybe allowed to ask such a question in private but never in front of other people much less a boss. But IF he was a close friend, he would know the answer. Cannot believe the gall and rudeness of some people.
  6. When I freeze juices, I use plastic juice jugs. Leave the lid not quite tight until it freezes and then tighten it up. But, I have also frozen juice, spaghetti sauce and chili in glass canning jars and hever had one break. I don't bother with which size lid as this stuff will come out when thawed. If you want to thaw quickly, loosen the lid and put the jar, standing up, in a sink or bowl of barely warm water. As it thaws, it will pour out until the major part will fit through the lid.
  7. When I hot pack foods, I put the jars in the canner and heat up both. Then take the jars out, fill, and put back into the hot canner. Correct me if I am wrong Violet, but can't thermal shock also happen if you put hot foods into cold jars?
  8. One of our egg people at the Farmers Market has started bringing up duck eggs. They sell for $3 per 1/2 dozen. He doesn't bring a lot(he also sells to a grocery store and a small market) but he is usually out of all eggs by about 9:00. Sale starts at 8. We have been educating his customers on duck eggs and now they are being asked for. He has one customer whose child is allergic to chicken eggs but can she has found out that the allergy does not extend to duck eggs.
  9. We put ours in the compost pile. And, this year, that compost pile produced over 80 pot-luck tomato plants in various parts of the yard. We used the compost in the garden and also to put 12 new trees. These plants are much healthier and growing much better than the ones that we planted in the garden that we got from the vegetable farmer that sold his extra seedling plants. They are producing later but more and don't seem to have the early blight problems that we have in my garden area.
  10. I bought my prepaid cell at Dollar General. Paid like $15.00(they are the same price at Wal-Mart) for the phone and then I buy minutes or a card that has minutes on it (different stores do it differently). Mine is AT&T Pay as you Go phone. If you get more minutes before the ones you already had expire, then they roll over. It can be $1.00/day when it is used plus $.10/minute for calls or it can be $2.00/day unlimited text and calling. I only use one about twice a week but carry one anytime I leave the house. It has come in handy when my van broke down. It doesn't work at my house but I have a landline so it is not necessary.
  11. First look at the price difference. If you will spend as much repackaging (seal-a-meal bags, etc)as you would buying the smaller container, why not just buy the smaller container. All other things being equal, for instance your time. As for me, I would repackage. Right now, I have refrigerator and freezer and so an opened can of dry item (say, powdered buttermilk) would have the lid put on and put into the refrigerator.
  12. I don't know about this recipe but I have made jelly from commercially bottled juice. Most recipes show how much fruit you need and how much juice you should wind up with. I use the regular recipe for whatever fruit or berry juice I am using.
  13. They can be very healing if you have had a bad day or two.
  14. so sorry. Hugs going your way.
  15. You don't need to peel the tomatoes before freezing. Just wash and put in gallon bags and throw in the freezer. The peels will slip right off when they thaw. Freezing makes the water in the tomato swell up and does the same thing as scalding them.
  16. From people I have talked with. Health care premiums will most likely NOT go down. They are already going up. And if you have a really good(usually called a Cadillac plan, I think), you will also have to pay a tax on the fact that you have a really good plan. " Health insurance plans sold to individuals and small businesses both inside and outside the new marketplaces will have to provide at least “essential benefits.” This means that all policies will include prescription drug coverage, preventive services, maternity care, mental health services and other components currently missing from many individual insurance plans." Well, sorry but I don't understand why a man or an older woman should be REQUIRED to pay for maternity benefits. Why should an older woman (if we want to be all inclusive, this would also apply to a lesbian) be required to pay for birth control coverageThe saying that we can keep our current plan was just a way to convince people this would be good. You can keep your current plan IF they decide that it meets the coverage they think you should have to pay for.
  17. This is how I do it. Really makes it nice to keep up with the sets. And, when making up a bed, you don't have to dig through two or three different stacks of things to get a set.
  18. When I cannot get them on sale, I pay $.59/lb for leg quarters (legs and thighs) with bone and skin. If I watch the sales, I can get them less expensive but not the $3.99/10lbs that we were getting last year. Won't pay for boneless skinless breast meat. Don't really like that much but I can buy a whole chicken a LOT cheaper and just cut the pieces out myself.
  19. So glad that ya'll are okay.
  20. The ducks are not as adverse to cold, wet weather as you would think. They don't like wind however, cold or hot. I wouldn't completely close the shelter. Ours is actually a doghouse with the front open and facing away from the normal winds. They spend very little time in it. Usually, the drakes would check it out when I put new hay in and sometimes the hens use it to lay eggs. They would sleep in the shade it puts out but not in it.
  21. This is about up in the northwest. But this quote from the page makes me wonder: "Second, new federal food regulations with an eye on homeland security have made it virtually impossible to rely on volunteers, the core of the cannery workers" What does homeland security have to do with using volunteers in the canneries?
  22. I used a baby pool for the pond when they stayed in their pen. They would actually be out on and around our pond during the day and I would put them up at night.
  23. Believe it or not, but besides the obvious of somewhere safe at night(they actually prefer to be on water), the next thing is making sure there is shade. They do not like it hot. At least mine don't. In the spring is the worst because their pen is in the shade of some oak trees but there is the time in the spring before they leaf out and the ducks hide in the shade of their house. Was really funny when I had nine to see them try to find the best shady spot.
