  1. They don't mention that they also sell the composite information (supposedly non-personally identifiable). My opinion is no matter what the more your infomation is out there, the more likely something will happen that you will not like. And discrimination(both directions) happens more often when they focus on your language or ethnic background or skin color. For whatever reason. From us, they get address and number of people.
  2. Check out your local greenhouse/landscape business. Our local ones sell aloe vera year round.
  3. I have just been given a Seal-A-Meal (my Dad and stepmother bought a Food Saver). I have never used one. The hose, etc wasn't with it. Any idea if I can use Food Saver bags with it since I can't find any Seal-A-Meal bags at the store?
  4. I think you're exercising some magnificent wisdom! I'm fearful of cannng myself, that's why I don't! We had our Vita-Mixer going and hubby forgot to put top on...had hot soup all over him, me, the ceiling, the stove, the frig...you name it...major clean up! It cured me of canning. If it had been a presser canning we both would probably have gotten burnt severly...it was hot enough anyway! And losing power is one of my biggies of freezing. Again, I LOVE MY DEHYDRATORS!!! oops...forgot something! Go online and find youtube's dehydrate2store lady. She is magnifico! She's the one that convinced me of dehydrating...then, katzcradul is another lady I enjoy! Have fun!!! If you had been pressure canning and not put the top on, the soup would not have gone anywhere although, you would probably boil it dry and warp the canner.
  5. Salaried doesn't mean anything to wage and hour and they are the ones that determine if you are due overtime. You don't have to go to court, you file with the Dept. of Labor, wage and hour division. Check out here to see if you are eligible for overtime pay. http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/fairpay/fs17a_overview.pdf We have been down this road before. What counts is WHAT YOU DO! And they are pretty specific. Salaried just changes how they figure things. You do need to keep track of your time. Do you use a time card? Keep a copy of it at the end of each week. If you do isolated things on the weekends (my hubby was in apartment maintenance), keep track of what you do and what time and how long it took. They will go back a couple of years. Now, your boss will find out who did it but, legally, he cannot fire you for that (of course, that doesn't mean he won't be mean) but, in some states, he can fire you because of whatever. Besides getting your backpay, the company will find out who is eligible for the overtime pay but only the one(s) that complain will get their pay unless it is a big enough company that wage and hour wants to go after them.
  6. Do you have a Fred's Discount Store in your area? Canning kettles there. Better prices on jars and lids there.
  7. Wal-Mart here has plenty of canning supplies but they are too expensive.
  8. Wander around their website. You might be surprised.
  9. I buy pectin in bulk here (and they are having a sale). http://www.kauffmansfruitfarm.com/Pectin%20Dutch%20Jell%20All%20Natural/item/400110 Anybody in the south and from Texas east check out http://www.fredsinc.com/ to see if you have a Fred's Discount Store in your area. I use them for jars and lids. Jars today are $7.00 for pints and quarts. Regular lids are $1.00/box of 12 and wide mouth $1.25/box of 12. They have other things also depending on what you need.
  10. First they recommend or it is voluntary, then they go to mandatory(usually because people don't fall in line and get it done).
  11. Since they started using bar codes, the checkers don't have to worry. The cash register checks your purchases to see if you have the correct bar code in there. If you haven't, it will kick the coupon.
  12. Since it is a blood test, could they be looking for anything else while they are there. (See I have a tin foil hat also).
  13. Where do you get 12 oz jars? All I can find is half-pint (8 oz), pint (16 oz) and quart (32 oz).
  14. I was sick at 7 1/2 months pregnant. OB said to take dramamine (motion sickness pills). Worked.
  15. They stopped putting coupons in our paper. At least the Sunday edition. So, we stopped getting it. We have a couple of places that double but a lot don't and some are getting really picky (for instance they won't take a coupon for a free product or will only let you use one coupon for each product). If you have two coupons and want to buy two products, tough, you can't use the second coupon.
  16. We have the big display of canning jars and other things canning at our Wal-Mart but the prices don't work. I don't pay more than $7 for jelly or pint canning jars and even the generic WM jars are more than that.
  17. Around here, we plant onions in February but hubby likes some of the sweet onions so maybe I will try them now. They don't store so well. Thanks for the ideas.
  18. Don't buy "back-to-school" anymore. Still using what I bought when I was homeschooling( 7 years ago). Just a note about backpacks. Around here, they do go on clearance later but my best prices have been at the Goodwill. Very nice backpack, clean, no damage, $3. Only bought one backpack per child but I spent the money and got one that had a lifetime warranty. We still have it. It has been returned once for the zipper to be repaired. No charge except for what it cost me to send it to them. East something. I would have to dig it out to get the name but it will be on the backpack. They were sold at a community college book store.
  19. We are in zone 7b and thinking about a fall garden. Do you grow one? What do you grow?
  20. I only buy all-purpose so don't worry about it but the test of feel sounds like a good way to find out.
  21. I agree. Wait until you know them much better. You really don't know if his definition of "prepper" is the same as yours. Oh, but if they do think like you do and ya'll are friends and the kids have friends can mean so much.
  22. 17 pints of tomatoes today. Last Friday it was 9 half-pints of crabapple jelly and 10 half-pints of wild plum jelly.
  23. We were using crabapples from the same tree (we picked together). The plums were from my trees for both batches. BUT, we used the same quantity of juice. And mine set up beautifully.
  24. Wierd but I didn't know how to word it. I made some crab apple jelly and plum jelly today. The crab apple takes 5C of juice and 7C of sugar. I wound up with 9 jelly jars. The plum takes 5 1/2C of juice and 7 1/2C of sugar. I would up with 10 jars. Now, here is the question. I talked to my friend and she said that USING THE SAME RECIPE she only got 5 jelly jars. Mine has set up just fine and looks great. Sealed quickly. But, am I doing something wrong to have so much more than she does from the same recipe?
