  1. Is this a good place to put this link? I came across this page about sourdough. I always thought of sourdough as only bread. This page has different breads plus pancakes, biscuits, English muffins, corn bread, date loaf, cake, and cookies. http://www.netwoods.com/cooking/sourdough.html In a scenario like Wagons Ho with little resupply options, I'd be trying to conserve everything I could.
  2. Well goodness, it showed up smaller than that in the preview.
  3. My new necklace - a grenade cozy!
  4. Quiltys41, I'm so sorry... I know it's difficult to lose someone you're so close to. ------------ I read your posts before reading here, I have a link to a very nice site with pictures on cheesemaking. http://www.cheesemaking.com/recipes/recipedetails.html 18 cheeses, plus yoghurt. No cottage cheese, though. Here's the direct link to Ricki's 30 Minute Mozzarella Magic... http://www.cheesemaking.com/includes/modul...Mozz/Index.html
  5. Mother, you mentioned in the packing thread about your cheese-making mishap regarding the bleu cheese. In the old recipe books I have, they mention having more than one cheese room for that reason. There were also separate rooms for bread and beer. All to keep the yeast strains pure. Would that be something to keep in mind in the valley?
  6. Don't you just love the Wayback Machine?! If there is an old site you want, put a search in for it. It can take 6 months for it to show up, but I've had great success using it.
  7. It very pretty, but looks like it has a flat roof... Won't a steep roof will be necessary because of snow? Since the train went through snow in April getting there, I assume it will be around for at least 5 months. When we lived in the foothills, we always had snow at Thanksgiving through March or April. You folks are a tad higher.
  8. I try not to post a new thread on the same topic, but rather to add to an old one. I don't want them getting lost, as on so many sites. This was the newest thread on paper I could find.
  9. Found it! Post 95, thanks mommato3boys. I thought there was something on the elevation, just didn't look back far enough. Climbing to 3,000-4,000 feet. - Found this: ( http://allrecipes.com/HowTo/High-Altitude-...ing/Detail.aspx ) "GUIDE FOR CAKE BAKING AT HIGH ALTITUDES Adjustment for 3000 feet: * Reduce baking powder: for each teaspoon decrease 1/8 teaspoon. * Reduce sugar: for each cup, decrease 0 to 1 tablespoon. * Increase liquid: for each cup, add 1 to 2 tablespoons. * Increase oven temperature by 25 degrees F. " http://www.fsis.usda.gov/factsheets/high_a...afety/index.asp - Does that sound right to those of you used to high elevations? Reducing the baking powder and sugar will help to stretch stored food, so that's a good thing for those who's supplies didn't reach them. - I hope I'm not being a pain, these are things I think about when I imagine we're there with you.
  10. I know you're in a valley, but the elevation is still quite high. My recipes and mixes always have adjustments for high elevations, and I've lived at sea level for decades so would have some trouble. Is anyone having difficulty breathing or getting water to boil/ baked goods to work correctly?
  11. Found this recipe for molasses 'Fart Cookies' and the story of how they got the name. http://www.susanvanderveen.com/cookies_fil...artCookies.html I wasn't sure whether to put it in Kitchen or Humor, but the recipe is real.
  12. Was tiptoeing about the internet, and came across this lovely wrapping paper from Nepal. It's handmade from the outer bark of a plant similar to a rhododendron. http://www.greenshanti.com/store/giftwrapp...g-paper-16.html Now the Daphne Edgeworthia (Paperbush) is an invasive species in many places so it's not good to plant it, but rhododendron's are everywhere. - Also found this site, that tells (and shows) how wrapping paper is made. http://www.inouting.com/inout.ing/pen-do-view-penid-41.html ----------- ------------ ------------- I thought I'd post it here, in case someone might like to try their own handcrafted wrapping paper.
  13. Now I know there was Easter in the story during the trip. Easter is in March or April; so what is the date right now, in the valley? (I've lost track of the length the trip took.) How long do you have until the last day of frost? I know different areas of the valley will have different dates, but is there an estimation?
  14. I'm having a good time reading the story, and am glad we have this comment thread... Things strike me differently than most - I seem to have a slightly unique view of the world.
  15. Scary, going down that 'hill.' Did it feel like riding this? http://neatorama.cachefly.net/images/uploads/2007/01/abandoned_park.jpg
  16. All that, and only one ?!
  17. I realized earlier it was posted that a communal building was already planned. Sorry I didn't pick up on that before. Put it in the right place, and there's your town hall, community center, farmer's market. - Does anyone know how to make a chimney that draws well? I think there are plans and explanations in one of the Foxfire books. http://www.woodheat.org/index.htm http://hearth.com/econtent/index.php/artic...ing_a_woodstove - There's two good threads on bathrooms down in Pioneer Living. Composting toilets, digging latrines, etc. - Smokers and Smokehouse plans - http://www.squidoo.com/how-to-build-smoker
  18. I call it stock. Tastes wonderful, doesn't it? Chock full of nutrition, too!
  19. Do a Google search for redneck _______ - hot tub, pool, etc. They look weird in our land of prefabricated everything, but many will actually work.
  20. Regarding the outhouses: If you can, have two; one close for winter, another farther away for summer. Put your woodshed near the back door with the open side away from the prevailing wind. Digging snow and ice from around the wood before you can take it inside really bites. - Sorry if I'm telling people things they already know; I'm just not certain who knows what.
  21. There will be a great deal to do. It will make it much easier if everyone does not need to do everything at the beginning. For example, I would love to trade pigs for dairy products rather than add cows or goats to the menagerie. There will be people who can doctor animals, and shoe horses - skills many will not have. The get-togethers did create 'things' like quilts for newborns and barns to replace burnt ones; but also cemented friendships and got folks out of the same four walls and sparks energy. We all know that cabin fever can be a real problem.
  22. Gotta leave room for a town too, dontcha know. Need to build a spa, nail salon, baseball field, stables, a nice eatin' place, meeting hall, etc. A nice, big building in the middle somewhere would work for all that, also a quilting bee/weaving shed - farmer's market/exchange. There must be people who grow/make/raise things others may not have. Others who want to learn skills. Good place to have classes for adults; kids too, if they won't all be home-schooled.
  23. Rectangles make more sense to me than squares. There is many a 'rectangular' plot of land around here with one side jaggedly following a river, another stopping at the top or bottom of a hill. Then you can put your house closest to town or neighbors, and the animals can roam farther (further?) away. For a while until it gets built up, you might value getting to town/neighbors more than you'll want complete privacy. You used to drive around and see 3 or 4 houses clustered at the corner of the property lines like a 4 way stop, with the cows and corn/wheat fields flowing away from all 4 houses. (Did that make sense?)
  24. Has there been any thought to conflict resolution, rules, etc? Town council, mayor, etc. - How will it be decided if two want the same plot of land, or someone moves in and wants to build a house of worship of another faith, or everyone wants to breed their animal to the same sire, or... I don't know - someone just punches someone else in the mouth? With the human race involved there will be conflict. To breed it out of us, would result in dead rabbit-beings. It must be dealt with.
