  2. Emerency Childbirth delivery. I know we can not give medical advice. But what happens if your baby decides to make its grand enterance and you can't get to the hospital, the midwife can't get to you...who's gonna catch and what to they need to do.
  3. Originally Posted By: cookiejar Has anyone heard of keeping water barrels up off the ground on something like a pallet? Yep but think it so that you can get a bucket or something on it so that you can water out, you know the law of gravity. You will need it high enough to get water out even if you install the spigot and hose. I personally would build a block as tall as a 5 gallon bucket and set on before filling it.
  4. Well as we all know tornado season is upon us already and hurricane season officially begins June 1 which is next Sunday. I suggest that you take a good look at Darlene's pictures and if you do not have basics or you know of someone that does not have the basics then show them these and give them a swift kick in the butt. Basics I am talking 7 days people SEVEN DAYS Food for everyone in your family for 7 days Water for everyone in your family for 7 days Meds for everyone in your family for 7 days Don't forget the can opener You can get a little one eye heater that will fit on top of a little propane canister fairly cheap. If you drink coffee then there is must for hot water. If there is another Katrina you need to be prepared to care for you and yours for at least 7 days. People need to realize that there is no magic wand to wave and get things from point a to point b in a matter of minutes or hours. If there is more than one area affected then resources will have to be split. And if we have storm on top of storm the way we did in 2004 then people are going to be exhausted. They are not going to be able to respond a the drop of a hat. Please remember that outside of the military 99% of the people that respond are VOLUNTEERS. Those red cross people don't get paid they are regular people just like you and me. They have left behind family and jobs to go help. Quick List food water meds flashlights batteries radio work clothes sturdy shoes gloves a couple of complete changes of clothes for each member of family tools to clean up debris with emergency numbers and back of important stuff on computer insurance papers and personal documents a tetanus shot if your last one has been longer than 7 years http://www.redcross.org/services/prepare/0...,0_239_,00.html

  6. Thanks Cricket. I guess I just got it in my head that a dial was the only way but now that I think about it my mothers canner didn't have a dial only had a weight. May have to get that one at WM oh and I was wrong it was a Mirror not a Presto. The presto was the pressure cooker a whole different thing.
  7. Thanks Snowmom, I was online today and found a Presto canner for the same price as the one at WM but it had a guage. It also had free shipping. It will get me started.
  8. Do any of you have a Presto canner with just a weight? I saw one at WM Sunday and almost bought it but since it just had weight I didn't. I was wondering of you could buy a gauge for a presto.

However I will plant different stuff in them. I think I will try the 3 sister technique this year. The tomatoes loved them, the corn did okay but I think I had too much in one container. I did not have to water as often and had I mulched better I probably could have gone futher between watering. This year I am making more boxes. Warning though if it is hot and dry in your area your container garden will cook real fast. Words of experience here.
  10. Andrea have you tried gowing potatoes in old tires or kiddie pools? I have had several people tell me how they do this but no one has ever said if they have good results. Anybody?

Got to get ready for those seeds that should be here any day now.

I figure as many clothes as I wash a week I will have more than enough to keep my garden green. I just won't use the wash water from the whites don't want to put bleach water on my plants.
  13. Hot diggit dog fruit trees in containers I had a container garden last year and it did pretty good until the drought and heat wave hit. Then they put water restrictions on us. This year I am going to use my gray water for the garden.

  17. for the information. As soon as we get moved I am going to set up a compost pile. Kind of hard when you live in an apartment. But I know where one is and I have access to it anytime I want or need compost.
  18. Dogmom do you use the process if so how does it work for you. I am a little concerned because it gets so hot here I am afraid the heat will kill the worms.

  22. Another twist on the brownie mix. Added only one egg and 1/4 cup oil 1/3 cup peanut butter and topped it with choc chips. It was good but dry and crumbly. Oh well back to the drawing board. Any suggestions as to making this more of a fudgey brownie?
