  1. Several Places are having a Mountain House sale for the entire month of September. There are some very good prices, http://www.safecastle.com/30-year-cans.aspx https://www.readymaderesources.com/cart/index.php?searchStr=Mountain+House&_a=viewCat&Submit=Search http://campingsurvival.com/mountain-house-sale.html Camping Survival is already showing that they are out of some items. Safecastle and Ready Made Resources offer free shipping. If only I had the funds to get what I would like to... John
  2. I've almost doen that one myself. I make myself look twice to make sure a book is free. John
  3. Okay, I'm sitting here thinking about the corn I'm going to dehydrate and the process involved. 1. Shuck the corn 2. Blanch the corn 3. Cool the corn 4. Cut the corn off of the cob 5. Dry the corn I am wondering to some what speed things up can I cut the corn off of the cob and then blanch? I am thinking that it would take less time to cool the corn this way instead of having to cool the entire cob which after the corn is cut off it is thrown away, Would this affect the quality? John
  4. 14 quarts of tomato juice. P.S. Still waiting for Jeepers to show up. John
  5. Jeepers. I waited as long as I could but I started without you. I got 17 quarts of whole tomatos' from two boxes. I still have 325 pounds more to do so will ya hurry up! John
  6. Thanks for the confirmation. Come on down Jeepers, you can help or just cheer me on! John
  7. I am going to pick up 375 pounds of tomato's tomorrow to make juice, salsa, spaghetti sauce, & whole tomato's. Can I use juice that I have canned from 2010 to add to the whole tomato's or do I need to use fresh juice? John
  8. I have a few friends that I will "give" my canned food to with no strings attached. Then I have some that I tell them that if they don't bring the jars back they don't get anymore food. John
  9. ooto, are you talking about one like this? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e5T4r3e2lgU John
  10. I'm gonna try this when my corn is ready which should be less than two weeks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1vRFUZ3KbE John
  11. Violet, the second batch did not have any garlic in it that is why I thought of the seed chambers. I'm at a loss, and I have more to can but I'm afraid to now. John
  12. Okay, the mystery deepens. I checked the jars after my last post and the liquid is cloudy. I am wondering if exposing the seed chambers while triming them would allow the liquid in them to come out in the jars hence making cloudy liquid. John
  13. I used this reciepe: http://nchfp.uga.edu/how/can_06/pickled_dill_okra.html I also used canning salt, and I did process it. I did another batch yesterday and left out the garlic, The liquid is clear. I will throw out the cloudy jars, not taking a chance on it. Thanks. John
  14. Not in oil, just minced garlic. John
  15. I canned some garlic dill okra over the weekend and the reciepe calls for cloves of garlic. I didn't have any so I used minced garlic, 1/2 teaspoon per pint. The liquid in the jars is cloudy today. Is this normal for minced garlic or did I mess up? I have more to do tomorrow. John
  16. Mine goes up every six months. When I talk to my agent he tells me it's due to having to pay out claims that are hit with tornado's, floods, etc. I talked with a friend of mine's daughter who is pretty high up with Grange insurance company. She told me that I live in the second highest part of the country that gets tornado's now and she spouted out numbers that I couldn't follow. When I told her what I pay now she siad she would underwrite me for twenty five percent less that I pay now simply because of how long I have been with my present company. I'm looking in to changing over. John
  17. Great news Drumrunner! Prayers do work. John
  18. What Jeepers said. Try to make a wind break to keep the wind away from the stove so the temperature doesn't fluctuate. John
  19. 94 here yesterday with heat index of 103. I dug and set fence post, ran wire, hoed some of the garden, and drank a ton of liquids. I was so drained when I got home at 5:45 pm I took a shower, ate a bite and went to bed. I paid for it today, I had plans to finish the fence and plant some more corn but I couldn't. I got the corn planted and hauled off some bushes to the woods and than sat in front of the fan. I came home at 2:30 and after a shower my plans include doing nothing. John
  20. I have heard of it but the raisins have to be white. I don't remember how long they had to be in the gin or vodka. The guy that told this insisted that only white raisins would work. John
  21. I don't trust the seed myself. I had the same results last year but I didn't use any fertilizer. There is no way to know how old the seed is when the dealer gets it and how long does it sit in the bin on the floor before it is sold. At the end of the season I doubt they throw the seed away. Last year some of the same type of corn was planted from a different supplier and it did grow, it only got about three feet high but I think that was due to the drought. I am hoping to replant either Saturday or Sunday if the ground dries out enough. If I have to keep waiting it will be too late to plant. John
  22. The guys at the co-op think the fertilizer burnt the seed. When we replant we will side dress it after it comes up and see how it does. John
  23. I found no tunnels in the area I dug up. If the insects ate it them suckers ought to be big enough to put a saddle on and ride. I suspect the seed was old and that is why we are going with a different supplier. On a side note...it's raining!!! And it is scheluled to rain for the next two days. At least I will be ready when it drys out. John
