  1. Missed it, too. But you are loved and treasured. Enjoy your day again and again. Virginia
  2. I was born at the end of WWII, and my dear mother saved my War Ration Stamp book. It contained basic food stamps, shoes, and another thing or two. Dear granddaughter took my book to school years later for history class, issued to me when I was only 1 month old. I guess she still has my book. Mother said when they issued a booklet they questioned the items you already had stored at home. If you were due 5 pounds of flour, but had 2 lbs in storage you could only get 3 lbs issued. Since I was a newborn they probably got no shoe stamps for me. My grandfather drove his car and farm equipment til the tires were completely bare. They used barb wire to wrap the tires in to hold them together somehow. Times were hard, and may become so again.
  3. Yes, I keep about 8 or 10 at all times. Someone is always getting meals together for Church gatherings, etc. I did hear a few years ago that cake mix would go bad. I have tried it many times, and it never hurt us or our friends either.
  4. Cannot imagine this happening, and pray that someone, somewhere can get to the bottom of this and do something.
  5. This must be the kidney stone club here. I had one in my early 20s and had no idea what it was. Doc didn't seem to know either. My Mother came to check on me and said that sounds just like a kidney stone (my father had plenty. When I had the second spell I went to the urologist and they were surprised, too. After the xray I heard the nurse running down the hall to my room, almost shouting "she has one". I did manage to pass it at home weeks later without too much pain.
  6. Never heard that before, but they are so good we can't quit eating. DH grandparents had a peach orchard and grew several varieties. The white peaches were very easy to bruise, and oh so good to eat.
  7. Jeepers, watch out. I took Cipro for years, mostly for kidney stone, etc. Suddenly, my lips started swelling and I could no longer take, trial and error after that, but face swelling is a BAD thing.
  8. Little Sister, I agree with Ambergris. He will be yours forever if you let him put off moving another time. Ask me how I know
  9. He is finally feeling almost normal, thankfully. I think the bandage will come off tomorrow. He is a worrier, so we will both be glad when all is healed. Thanks for asking.
  10. Not too much changes around here. Our lives are pretty much settled, except that DH has a procedure this afternoon. Needs a MOHS treatment to take care of cancer on his face. He is nervous, but they work wonders these days.
  11. I indicated "small amount on the lid". I have never seen it creep down the glass jar. Those jars would go into the trash. Would not even open them. If my memory serves, I believe it was only tomatoes that showed on the lids.
  12. Having had some small amount of black stuff, and listening to my long deceased grandmother, she told me at one time which food might cause a slight amount of black "stuff" that was OK. Most of what I see here I would never feed to humans. Grandmother did feed it to the pigs, though.
  13. How did you know so many of us so well?
  14. I may have already posted this somewhere, but my dear Mother told me how to make crackers and cookies freshen up. Spread one layer on a cookie sheet and heat in a low degree oven, maybe 250, for a short time. I just tried it with graham crackers and it works great. Think I tried saltines once, and it worked too.
  15. I have always resisted buying ground beef in the long tubes. It just doesn't look as good. I watched my sister once, cook the whole 10 pound tube, and then can it. It looked ok, but not notmal. What do ya'll think?
  16. I have read that no edible plants should be planted close to a house that must have termite treatments. Is that true, or have any of you tried it. I have not planted anything near our house since.
  17. Spending my time last night and today reorganizing food stuff. I do have more than I imagined but not enough to really called myself prepared. Living in a small city in a subdivision with many neighbors, and then adult children and grandchildren, when will I ever have enough?
  18. I have both family trees in my Baby Book my mother completed. Think I can give the grandparents names, but not all the great grands.
  19. You all are so helpful to me. I had kinda decided maybe most of you were younger than me, maybe middle age, since you still accomplish so much. It gives me encouragement to keep on doing all that I can, as long as I can. Being 77 is not exactly my favorite age, can't even remember what was my favorite age. Thanks so much.
  20. DH keeps telling me "we have enough", but how can we know. Times are getting worse, and even total strangers stop me in the store to discuss what may be coming, in vague ways. Thanks for the calculator.
  21. I don't keep much flour, just not much of a baker, for now anyway. Our grocery stores have white buckets with lids that frosting comes in, and if they have some they will give to anyone who asks. I need to do that again. This is a small city, so we all get along pretty well. Dee, it was nice to see you posting again, and now some other are rejoining.
