  1. If you'd like to warm up a bit there are a couple pieces of wood large enough that wouldn't break. Oh boy, I get to eat eggs again!!!!!
  2. Just look at the way those animals respond to him! Amazing! They calm right down and do what he wants them to. My oxen are gonna get jealous. LOL
  3. Good thing I brought those jars of plum jam. At least I still have a couple for DH. He would be hysterical if it had been his last jar. All in all, our wagon seemed to fair well. The canned goods fell over but the extra towels kept them in their area. DH walked for a bit but during the ruckus, climbed up and took the reigns to keep an eye on things. Seemed to him things were under control. AH, your rooster was late this morning, didn't you see me next to the little bbq fire? Had coffee warming while I studied. I'm an early riser too, wasn't the moon gorgeous as it set this morning? Brilliant oranges, yellows and reds. Mr_Rider, we have some Band-Aids and neosporin ointment if you need it for your blisters. Just say'n. CGA, I'm not allowed to eat the eggs yet. I want to keep up on my health issues, don't need to have a stroke or heart attack on the trip. But, I do make a mean 'over easy' egg, also have a few mexican dishes I could make with them. But, I am sure PCS has some that are better. Will the extra fit in your freezer? I would like to say, I am impressed how everyone is handling their animals. I'd help, but I'd get in the way. Frank stuck his nose out once and retreated back to his hammock, giving me one of those looks like, "how DARE you!" Silly ferret.. DH gave me the reigns about noon and crawled in back to read one of the books he heisted for the day. I think I just saw him head back to the 'Library' for another book. We checked our load, un-hitched the oxen & are letting them graze. After watering them, I cleaned out the bucket filled it and warmed the water on my bbq and took a sponge bath. (what a rush of memories) DH did the same. We have a medium fire pit in the middle of the wagon ring. I collected some dead wood from the surrounding woods and am sitting off from the fire, breaking it into 'fire size' pieces. Coffee is on and so is a pot of water for tea or cocoa, I have some extra cups for anyone who may want some. Anyone know what PCS is cooking for dinner tonight? If she's too wore out, we'll munch on some of our jerky for tonight.
  4. I was tidying up the house today, and decided that I'd go ahead and take the coleman cook stove and 10 gal of fluid, thanks to your suggestions. Also stuffed in a couple hand held mirrors, (Vanity *Sheesh*) they are also good for signaling and just maybe starting fires? And 2 compasses. DH was delighted that the wagon was able to handle 5000, he promptly filled it with a couple crates of guns & ammo. I told him he would have to keep an eye on our oxen to make sure he wasn't stressing them. I also snatched up my 8 potted tomato plants and bungeed them on top of his cases. I know I'm forgetting something important... DH grabbed the 2-way radio and the extra batteries, for emergency use only, tho we know after they die, that's it. I also grabbed my quilt in progress to occupy my time on the trail. I grabbed my back brace out of the drawer 'cause packing has taken it's toll on DH has no problem with providing security, after all those years as a LEO, it will help him stay on his toes. We stuffed the hi-lo jack next to the ammo crates and I grabbed my purse. We let the oxen graze the grass in our yard all day and they are content chewing their cud tonight.
  5. But did she mean it for our trip? (Heading out to see what else I can throw into my wagon.... if it's still 15,000.)

Welcome to our convoy, CeeGee, looking forward to Sundays now. Stephanie, MIL was laughing at me when I showed her the drawing, we were watching football and I was trying to see how it would look. I'd work on it, change my mind, erase and move something and show it to her again. She said it looked like a really slow motion picture 'cause I kept moving things around in the drawing. LOL (Anything to make her smile.) It was her idea for the bullwhip.
  7. Oh my we need to leave?! My wagon's almost finished... I'll need to update my list in a little bit... to add things like the bag of cotton boles/seeds I gleaned from the local fields, mre's and such....
  8. Quiltys41, CGA, and firegirl969 are coming along! Nice to have you on our trip. Mother, you are sooo right. DH taught me to backpack for weeks at a time when we first met. When he said camping, I thought KOA, not hiking up a mountain for three days, then, staying for weeks, with only the things we could carry on our back. Needless to say, my first trip was memorable. After the first day, carrying the waterproof canvas tent and most of the food supplies plus what I had brought for me, I started re-evaluating what I had choosen to bring... much of it got stashed along the trail to relieve the weight I was carrying. He made me map it and pick it all back up on the way back.... His motto: "Leave it so no one knows you were ever there." I've added a few things like my dive gear bag, which weight 7 lbs., who knows, maybe I can find where the fish are hiding... lol Binoculars & my telescope. Oh, since AH is running the general store, we'll run the armory. Need ammo? I've taken Stephanie's suggestions, and added some Christian study material to the library wagon, and transferred only 8 5 gal jugs of water to the water wagon... 320 lbs. if it can handle it. However, we are bringing the water purifier in case we come across water to refill what has been used. My dear MIL and I were discussing it and she wanted me to let you all know, she would love to come, but is a wee bit old for the trip. She said however, that she would take some of the things I am leaving and trade for miscellaneous items like a straight razor and strap, so DH could shave. She really got into it and began asking me if I had this... or that.... or have I thought of this... or that.... . She also asked me to keep her updated on our progress. I've got most of my wagon packed, added miscellaneous items, like Sterno for the trip. Time to double check some things in my wagon.....
  9. I've got some of that covered, a couple reams of paper, drawing paper, pastel & charcoal pads, 3-4 manilla paper rolls, a mega collection of pastels with a couple boxes of standard chalk, a 6"W x 12"L x 6"H container full of pencils, pens, erasers, and a large box of crayons. (Wondering if I could squeeze in some of my oil, acrylic & water paints? Drat...more weight.... back to my packing list...)
  10. I did a 6 hour trip today and thought of many things.... your lists have also reinforced my need to make sure I have things ready. Time to go sell some stuff that I wouldn't be able to bring for a few things I still need.

  13. This is great! I've saved my Word file and am editing it, to make sure my bags are properly packed. You've specified our weight limit, apx. 12,000 lbs. and the dimensions are 12' L x 4' W x 4' D x 11' H , to make a trip in about 2 Months. Mother has posted some wonderful information, that has caused me to re-think my packing. Since I am dragging DH along with me, we are talking about this and he has asked me a 1,000 questions, of which these are the only ones I haven't been able to provide the answers for so far: Questions for this scenario; 1. Can we bring any of our modern conviences? 2. Can we salvage/barter/trade the rural, cities we pass? 3. What type of landscape do we need to traverse? Gulfcoastruth, I saw your caravan! LOL!!! Even got to get a ride in one of the 'follower' vehicles, I'd run out of gas in one tank and the toggle switch was broken for my other tank and I needed to get 10 miles home, at night, to get my papa to help me remedy the situation. So, here I am in a dress and high heals, stuck in the middle of nowhere with a broken vehicle. The driver gave me a ride and told me of your wagon train adventure. We've seen several wagon trains go through our area, including Teen Challenge convoys, I am so inspired by their teaching ethics. My DH & I have spent years of backpacking and taking teens with us for the 'back to our roots' adventures into the wilderness. I will admit, now days it is difficult to find any place that is free of man's hands.
  14. Did I miss something? I don't see the 'edit' button anymore on my original post. Edited to add: able to edit this post....

I'll consider how much I can fit in my wagon and be back later.....
  16. How about the fake grass pad for your pet to potty on in the house?!
  17. I didn't know that. Might be why my DH had his heart problem.. time to change our water again. I'm going to check into the pure CO to see if I can use it. I have avoided it due to allergies.
  18. Once you learn the technique for making the basic stitch, (Cow Hitch), it becomes automatic. The basic stitch forms rings, picots, and chains to create the lace. Here's a few other sites that offer the basic techniques for getting started. http://www.tatting.net/techniques.html http://www.craftown.com/instruction/tatting.htm http://www.be-stitched.com/howtotat1.asp
  19. That particular cross pattern calls for size 20, I used sewing thread. I first learned as a child from my Great Aunt, and try to do a project at least once or twice a year. I still remember her saying "Under...Over...Under...Over" It took a lot of practice. Many times when using thin threads, I'm unable to 'undo' a knot and have to start all over. Definitely start with a thicker thread until you get the feel for it.
  20. The one I was working on is finally finished. Actually I finished another one, but when I went to press it, I found I had made a couple of noticeable mistakes, and had to try again. I can't wait to see some of your work, Snowmom & C4C. Here's one pattern I've done several times.
  21. Thanks Snowmom, great links. Now, if I can get my fingers to hang on to the shuttle for more than a couple of knots, I'd be done with the one I have been working of for a month. Sheesh.
