  1. I’m impressed and in awe.  We are in the beginning of our intense heat.  Every, trees, grass, etc, has a nice tinge of burnt brown.  Typical AZ desert heat.  I do miss MI growing season… we used to have a huge garden…..

This year I decided not to try to garden during the summer.  Might plant some in the fall, but, with the sabbath year next year, I haven’t decided.  December has us around freezing daily, so if I plant anything it has to be harvested before the end of November, early December.  I might just let the garden “rest” and just mulch it.  IDK yet.

  2. :hapydancsmil:  Heard the first cicada yesterday!!!!  30 day and then we get rain!  So, says the old wives tale…. :hapydancsmil:

Fresh veggies, and zucchini too!  Awesome.  I haven’t been able to get much from zucchini plants.  One or two, before the bugs devour the leaves…or the heat… they also don’t grow well in the fall, I think it has to do with how much daylight they get.  IDK.

Right now, the only thing left in the garden is a few onions and carrots that have seeds….  The spice garden is still growing, enduring the heat…. 108° in the shade yesterday.

Today, I am emptying the ‘hot tub’, cleaning it, and refilling with cold water, to watch the fireworks tomorrow…. Plus, I will probably prepare the brisket with a dry rub overnight, then, put it on the BBQ first thing in the morning.

(are)….you "prepared" for action due to what you've learned here at MrsS?

    Stay safe!

Absolutely prepared.  Every year… like Mt_Rider likes to post, because she is also in a wild fire area…. BOB, with supplies, paperwork, animal preps, for that all important, “get out now” event.

God forbid, but, in the event of a wild fire, close enough to threaten our house/home, we could evacuate within 5 minutes… every year brings the awareness us, acutely!

So, our BOB is always ready, vehicles prepared, never without less than a half tank, BOB is updated/scrutinized 3-4 times a year, JIC.

Right now, I weighed my updated BOB at 13 lbs.  JIC I have to carry it, long distance, and DH isn’t here or with me on the road.  My calculations, says I could potentially survive, with its contents alone, about a week. With my outdoor skills, even longer…JIC.

  4. BTW, the free app is called ‘My Radar’, you have to select the “fire” selection in the preferences.

    http://MyRadar.com/

Tap on the fire decal, on the map & you can see when it was reported, and how many acres it is, including a link to the National fire service, which will show more information about the fires.

  5. Sorry, Little Sister, I was being a brat.  Yeah, I know, around here in AZ, most fires are caused by careless people, who have no clue how to extinguish a camp fire, blow off fireworks in the desert, because they can, or terrible people who toss their cig butts out the window…that’s one of my personal pet peeves!

We were 115° today, most of the plants, here in the desert,  are now dried up and a tinder box.  I dislike, to the point of hating, people who don’t respect the desert.  Been here over 60 years, and still can’t understand why people don’t care enough to prevent wildfires.  Even youngsters, born here, are adamant about protecting the desert.

Our Sonoran desert is unlike anything on earth, some of our plants, only grow here, period.  Like the saguaro.  It’s the only place on earth our species grow.  Wildfires devastate their habitat and destroy the old growth.  Some have been dated back 6-900 years old!!!

Snowbirds, transplant northerners…. They don’t seem to care….  IDK… drives me bananas sometimes…..  :banghead:

  6. Dee, I peel, with a potato peeler, with gloves on, & slice, then, blanch mine about 2-3 minutes, strain, cool & freeze them.  That has worked great for me and they are still on the crispy uncooked side when they are defrosted, so, I can either fry them in butter or microwave for fresh veggies.

I also blanch the greens, strain & cool and freeze them.  DH likes beet greens much better than spinach.

The stems are done the same, cut in 2-3” sections.  They are fried with a touch of seasoning.

  7. Jeepers, Jeepers, so terrible they did that to you.  I wouldn’t have been as nice as you.  I would have taken the check to my bank, deposited it and let them fight it out.  Personally I despise several of the big banks, because of that.  They wanted me to pay them for cash deposits, 35%!  That didn’t happen and I will never utilize their services again!

    :soapbox:

    :gdtmi:

Also, contact your insurance company, tell them the bank stole your money…..

  8. Also, Jeepers, look up ivermectin…. It’s helped me.  Do your research, you may have to show them a picture of your horse…. :008Laughing:

Safe in TX.  Roads were good, a lot of one lane traffic slow downs, but mostly never actually stopped traffic.  Whew!

  9. Sorry, I ran the upgrade…..

The system is re-indexing the data base, it’ll take a few hours, especially if you try to search for something, so if’n you discover an error, PM me, but understand, the systems upgrade might take a bit to refresh….I’ve seen it take 24-72 hours to do its thing.  :sigh:

  10. Yikes,..just logged in…gotta do an update.  🙄

Been busy preparing to go to TX on Wednesday.  Seems like everything has jumped my priority list….

I have had a few minutes to read, but never enough time to reply.  You all are really doing well and dealing with the day to day emergencies rather efficiently.  I’m looking forward to seeing how everything works out.

Tomorrow I pack, & Wednesday I go back to TX. MIL has called, several times asking for me to bring this and that..so, it seems I will be busy there taking care of her “ToDo” list.  :sigh:  Including fixing the sprinkler system…. I’ve got some supplies, don’t know exactly what else I will need, until I get there.  :imoksmiley:

What do people do with their things when they have no children to pass things down to. Or if they have children, what if the kids don't want any of it?

DH is an only child…everything goes to him.  We selected a child we are fond of, to receive all we have.  Sell it, pitch it, donate it?  I won’t care, I’ll be gone.  The family heirlooms I inherited, have already been sent to the respective relatives.  Done, except one item, when I am ready to pass it on, I will, DH knows what to do, if I pass before him, either way it is in the will.

I gave up concerning myself with “my treasured possessions”.  After seeing so many TV shows, like storage wars & pawn stars, at MIL’s house, it made a lasting impression, that, my ‘stuff’ is someone else’s junk, or just something to sell & make money off of.

  13. Sooo, I was cleaning house…. The bathroom light fixture is, …60+(years old)…. One screw hasn’t moved since the early 1970,when my grandmother asked me to replace the bulb….never has since either….  It did today and the cover fell…. In slow motion…..I tried to catch it but…you know…crash, shards of glass everywhere in the bathroom!…..

Got a replacement, but the whole fixture, not just the glass.  Will replace the old with the new…later…not in the mood today… lots of re-wiring to do, if’n I want to do it right…..at least the new bulb cover fits….    He says it is dimmer….. :sigh:

  14. Jeepers, try left over oil. Or just some olive oil on a rag, let them set a few days…weeks, then a light metal 3M sand paper, and done., a touch more olive oil, wipe clean and…. Pledge…. BTDT.  If they look like they are rusting again, a soft rag with olive oil, buff… and it should cure or inhibit the rust growth.

ETA….  I want…. Don’t know where I’d put them, but it’s still an awesome collection!

  15. Well…darn it.

Ran out of red, figured how to add it.  It’s the chain, not the round.  Then, to my dismay, ran out of black… I didn’t do a good job connecting the black… :sigh:

I will finish this one, but for his Bible, I will make another….
    Pics after I get done.

ETA:  :groooansmileyf: I used the wrong thread to connect… sewing thread, not tatting thread… I feel so stupid… attached the right thread…this is going to be interesting if it turns out. Lol.
