  1. Bean Patties Take any leftover beans and mash with a fork. Add enough flour to bind. Shape into patties and fry both sides in butter or oil. This is good for breakfast or dinner in place of potatoes. It can be served on a bun with mayo or catsup for lunch.
  2. I just saw this on another site: It is called Bannock. 1 cup flour 1 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1 1/4 cup water Mix together into a batter. May need a little more or less water. Fry in skillet with a little oil like pancakes. Will not brown as much as pancakes. Serve with butter and jam or jelly. Can also serve with syrup. Tastes pretty good! You can add less flour and make it into a heavy biscuit like dough that can be kneaded (not too much though), flattened and fried in a little more oil until golden brown.
  3. My prayers are with you, I lost my husband 2 years ago, I know how hard it is.
  4. Here is a link to a good article about affording medical insurance. Its written for Californians, but most of the info can be used by anyone. http://www.sacmag.com/media/Sacramento-Mag...-these-10-tips/
  5. Wow! What helpful info! I'd like to suggest talking to hospital social workers. They found my husband a program to pay 100% of his prescription copays. They also located a program that sends him free cases of the nutritional drink Ensure (they sent him over 100 cans!) and told him they would help him with his Cobra payments when the time comes. Also you can locate the manufacturer of prescription meds online and if you are experiencing a hardship, contact them to see if they will send you your meds for free or at a reduced cost. If you are applying for social security disability, they now have a list of 50 illnesses that will guarantee you a decision within 30 days instead of wating for years. The list of the qualified illnesses can be found online. Some people without insurance volunteer to do hospital research studies. For instance let's say you have a mental illness but cannot afford meds. You might locate a psychiatric hospital in your area that does clinical trials. You will be given a full free physical and be asked to try certain antidepressants for free. Dental schools give reduced dental care. Also read up on the new Health Care Reform to see if you could be helped.
  6. I read and do research or practice new things or things I would like to get better at such as gardening, making newspaper logs, making bread, yogurt, vanilla extract, sourdough etc.
  7. The Betsy and Tacy series Green Eggs and Ham Pippi Longstocking Series The Bobbsey Twins series

To get to our patio we have to go from the kitchen, down the stairs to the basement and then outside. Glass plates are heavy and breakable.
  9. I always buy whole milk. At the time of use, I mix it with half water to get an approximate 2% milk. This especially works well in cooking and baking, you will not be able to tell the difference. It cuts the price and the carbs in half. Be aware though that it also cuts the nutrients in half. Children under the age of two need all of the nutrients when drinking milk. I stopped buying plastic wrap, bags and aluminum foil. Instead, I wash, dry and reuse all of these items that come with packaging into the house i.e. plastic bread bags, produce bags, cereal bags etc. and I wash and reuse my aluminum foil that I previously purchased. You can use lemon-lime soda in the place of milk in your pancake recipes including using pancake mix.
  10. I forgot to add I use old credit cards and plastic hotel key cards to scrape and remove stuck on food from my pots and pans. I no longer use soap pads such as SOS or Brillo pads. I save old soap slivers and when I get enough, I throw them into my blender to grate them. I then pour the grated soap into a small bowl, add a little warm water, let it sit for about 15 minutes and then roll them into attractive soap balls. I let them dry for several days before I use them. They look attractive and as professional as the ones you see in the stores. I bought several reversible comforters for my beds about 10 years ago. When I tired of the first side, I reversed the comforters for a new look. When I tired of the second side, I bought duvet covers for them to change the looks. I imagine I'll continue to use these same comforters the rest of my life, just reversing the sides or changing the duvet covers. I've saved a lot of money doing this. I save boxes and packing peanuts that I receive in the mail as well as large and padded envelopes and I resend them to others when I am mailing packages. I use both sides of computer paper.
  11. Thanks Momo for the newspaper log tip!
  12. I cut my dryer sheets in half before using them. Once used, they are great for cleaning out the dryer lint trap. We compost leaves around our trees to fertilize them and use fallen twigs and branches in our fireplace. I wash and reuse the plastic produce bags from the grocery store to cover and store food and baked goods. I also slit them open and roll my pie crusts out on them. This keeps my counters and rolling pin clean. I place the dough between two pieces. I never buy plastic wrap anymore. I purchase plastic plates such as Hefty Interlocking plates and plastic cups. I rewash them in my dishwasher and have been using the same plates and cups for several years. I also rewash platic utensils. I use paper towels twice. I wash and reuse aluminum foil, waxed paper cereal liners, baggies and plastic containers. I buy Olay Facial Cleansing Cloths to wash my face with. I cut them in fourths and use a clean washcloth to rinse my face. I use newspaper to clean my windows and wrap presents with. I plan on purchasing a paper log maker to make paper logs for my fireplace.
