  1. Amazon is a much cheaper grocery option than it has been in the past several weeks. Some shelf-stable foods have disappeared, some have become much more widely available, and some have changed position or labels. Case in point is powdered milk. I have not bought Nido in a long time because what was available here stopped being the powdered whole milk. Now, you can again get the powdered whole milk. https://www.amazon.com/Nestle-Nido-Milk-Powder-Ounce/dp/B00E5VTBUK It is substantially more expensive than it was in the nineties, but what isn't? The Pet brand of canned evaporated milk I grew up on is being crowded out of the market by Nestle/Carnation. Some people are apparently willing to pay $7 for one little can. Alas, I am not. And searching for evaporated milk gets nothing less than $7 or so except Nestles. But, as Jeepers says, I digress. A search for powdered whole milk turns up an array of options I didn't see last year. Should anyone here feel capable of breaking down and packaging for storage on her own (ahem) Land o Lakes has a 55lb bag of Grade A for $199 and free shipping https://www.amazon.com/Lakes-Powder-Pasteurized-Gallons-Milkfat/dp/B086829CLZ That's $4 a pound. 28.5% milkfat. The options in smaller packages run $12 a pound and up. Way up. If you want to get ready for the next shut-down, it's a good time to do it. The hurricane buyers are not in panic mode yet, even. If you do the Prime Pantry for the better prices they sometimes have (be careful about those) you might want to buy just over the $35 needed for free shipping and then hit send and start another box. Also, don't buy too many soup cans per box. The boxes are not always as sturdy as they should be, and floppy, heavy boxes are hard to deliver. The previously assigned mail carrier threw some of the heavier boxes down on my steps. Avoid this level of resentment by ordering lighter boxes, making multiple orders.
  2. As of today, 12% of "tests" have come in positive. This appears to combine the tests for current infection and the antibody test for past infection/exposure. 9. I take that back. The CDC says the flu-like illness is just over 1% under baseline reporting this week and last week. They think people are not seeking medical care because of the corona virus.

I don't know why this has occurred. Corrections would be the best guess. I am focusing on these because, while "confirmed" patients may be double counted, and dead people may be presumed to have died of covid, someone who is in the hospital is under a lot of hands and eyes, and is subject to a lot of paperwork. Some pneumonia cases or weird cases might get listed as covid admissions for higher funding, but your average flu case won't--or apparently isn't, considering the unusually high numbers of flu cases and flu deaths being reported. Anyway, these are the end of the day numbers on May 27.

  15. Look at this one on Amazon. "Essential Medical Supply Height Adjustable Hand Bed Rail" the style is "with floor supports." It has pipes that go under the mattress for stability, and pipes that go onto the floor for stability. A gate goes down so your husband can climb out of bed holding onto this. Then the gate goes up so that he does not roll out of bed accidentally. A lot of thought went into keeping this so simple. The company is "essential medical supply." Edit: this is the one I put together, although it is a different brand name. https://www.amazon.com/Carex-Easy-Up-Bed-Rails-Elderly/dp/B006GUMZ06

  20. That's what I was wondering when I read --was it Montana?--some state counting both residents who were sick elsewhere and visitors sick here. How many people are being counted twice? And the "recovered" numbers have to be an act of pure fantasy. I got pretty much better, mostly, but first the cough and then the fever came back, then the weakness, and now the kidney pain. I bet my legs will be aching tomorrow. All my symptoms in reverse order of their initial appearance. I'm seeing a pulmonary specialist Monday. Theoretically.
  21. Right now, Zzelle, we are in an age of transition. Being bi, being trans, being intersex, being queer, being other, is something people say out loud these days. It's encouraged. But really for a lot of people it boils down to a feeling of being other, feeling alien, feeling outside the current. People have always had that feeling, especially in adolescence. Some go wiccan, some go to drugs, some go to extreme sports, some diet themselves down to eighty pounds. The new thing is saying "I'm trans." I'm not saying she's not trans. I'm saying she might be working through different issues and this is how she might be seeing it. And you can help by not making her defend herself. Just step back and let her try on the clothes and see that they don't fit. (Or that they do, and that's another story.) I've had this conversation with people whose daughters have come out as wiccan, but really they were just feeling alien/outside. You build bridges, you don't lock doors. For the wiccan in the Christian house, you advise them to look at Jesus as an agrarian deity in the winter-born king tradition, for example. In the "this body isn't who I am" situation, whatever it's being called, you just say you love and accept whoever your child is and hope they don't insist on surgery.
  22. Five million cases counted in the world, a million and a half here. 23. The big check for my house sale is still on hold, but the bank let me have me a teaser amount, like a hushpuppy. And, coincidentally, the battery on my laptop "suffered a permanent failure and must be replaced." Which, naturally, is not covered by my warranty. The warranty people want me to send the computer off for other warranty repairs, but can't guarantee they will get to it within two weeks. And the extended warranty runs out in August anyway. So I bought a new computer. I had my son poke around and sort out the options for a couple of days, and I picked one of the four he suggested, then I went on Amazon and was about to order what I thought was that machine (Amazon does not always make it easy to tell what you are choosing, though). Luckily, he pointed out that I was fixing to click on something with a quarter of my current hard drive size and so on. I'm using 19% of my current hard drive's space, so this sounded like a problem. I dialed it up a model for $200, and only thought later that for about $50 we could move my current hard drive to a case to use it as a backup. Buying something this bid always feels like a huge mistake. I always think of ten ways I could have done it better, or cheaper, or could have done without for another week...maybe. But it's done.
