I have made dandelion jelly and rosehip jelly but that's all the flowers I've ever used.  Buttercup mentioned she's made peony jelly and that Pinterest has all kinds of flowers to use for making jelly.

I haven't checked it out yet but I'm going to.  With all the flowers, wild or otherwise, around it would be fun to try this or that.  I've also made dandelion bread.  Can you make other breads with flowers?  This could be fun!

Never try a flower or any kind of plant unless you know it's safe.  There are too many good things out there to ever chance something that might be bad.

If you try it let us know.  I can hardly wait!

I'm trying to get some redbud 🌸 blossoms so I can try it. And maybe lilac!

My favorite small animal was the Nigerian Dwarf milk goats.

Mine are Nigerian Dwarf. That's the momma who gave me 5 kids a few weeks ago.  3 just weren't strong enough to live although I tried my best.  She rejected one and I saved her, she my bottle baby.  And she's raising one.

2 Cows (1 mini hereford and one Jersey), freeloading chickens, geese, turkeys, quail, pigs, goats and one lonely baby duck! 1 lab, 1 great Pyrenees, one annoying cat and 6 beehives!

I've lost my mind,  or baby duck needed friends. My youngest daughter's neighbor offered us her ducks for next to nothing. They are laying. 4 different breeds. Did I mention there's 24?  Good things there's a creek close or if never get anything done but water!

  4. We had a Jersey for a couple of years. Last year she gave us a beautiful heifer we are hoping will be our new family cow.  We lost mama this winter and it still makes me pout. Lots of feed and  milking,  we had a machine so there was cleaning out and the buckets.  Worrying about mastitis (that about stressed me over the edge). But so much fun, excitement and love. I've had goats too and loved them equally!

  5. I've been making 3 ingredient biscuits for a few years now. I could never make good biscuits until I found this one! :feedme:

    2 cups self-rising flour

    1 to 1 1/4 c heavy cream

    1 pinch of salt

    Preheat oven to 450⁰

Combine all ingredients. This dough tends to be a bit dry. Once mixed together dump out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it 10-12 times and press out to 1 inch. Cut with biscuit cutter. Do not twist cutter. Put on an greased cookie sheet. Bake at 450⁰ for 10-12 minutes. Makes about 6 biscuits

    Here we

Last evening we learned a friend drove through flood waters. (PLEASE NEVER DO THAT!) His truck stalled in the water and he's now missing.  If you'd be willing I'd  appreciate prayers he's found and for his family!

Sadly he was found deceased. Took 2 days to recover his body. Please pray for his family!

My beans are just sprouting.  If the twins come by this weekend, I hope to get them to plant some squash and bury the Irish potatoes (which might still grow...)

You have twins? How old are they?

  8. This has always been one of my favorite threads on MrsS!

Last night after supper I cooked 3 pounds of hamburger. 2 pounds I turned into taco meat for the weekend.  The remaining pound I plan to make beef stroganoff for tonight's supper!

I have 8 boneless, skinless chicken thighs thawed in the fridge,  what are some ideas I could use then in?

  9. Here we are the first of April! ! Do you have any big plans in April? Will you be planting a garden?

I sit with a 1 and 2 year old daily.  I'm looking forward to warmer weather so they can get outside and run their energy off!

  10. I love our honeybees! Hubby does most of the work with them. Even with my full armor on, I'm scared of being stung! I'd like to learn some natural ways to keep mites and wax moths at bay. We harvest in the late spring and usually leave the rest for them to make it through winter.

If anyone knows where I could find some free online bee "classes", please let me know! I can only learn so much from YouTube!

  11. I've no idea if I'm doing this right!

This sure feels like coming home! When I first came to Mrs S I was 33, married with 3 children. Here I am close to 51, still married with 3 children but have added 9 grandchildren. The oldest one will be 16 in a few days! We still live in Illinois not too far north of Becca Anne!

Still have chickens, geese,  pigs,  and goats. We have added honey bees, dairy cows, beef cows and quail.

I work away from home now,  doing in home child care. That combined with health issues I'm exhausted most days!! Still garden,  can and cook when I can!

I'm looking forward to being here watching others learn and be excited about what this site meant to me 18 years ago!

  12. Easy One Hour Homemade Bread
    Makes 2 loaves

5 1/4 cups white bread flour
    2 – 4 Tbsp. sugar
    1 1/2 tsp. salt
    1 1/2 Tbsp. (rounded) saf-instant yeast
    1 1/2 Tbsp. oil
2 cups warm water (somewhere between 100 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit)

    1. Mix dry ingredients.  Add in oil and water.  Mix for 1 minute and then check the consistency of

the dough.  It should be very sticky.  If it is too dry, add more water.

    2. Mix for 5 minutes.  (Do not add any more flour after the dough has finished mixing.)

    3. Spray kneading surface with cooking spray and turn dough out onto surface.  Knead dough briefly until it has a smooth even consistency (this will only take a few turns of the dough)

    4. Divide dough into 2 pieces and place on greased baking sheets.  Cover with a large dish towel and let rise for 25 minutes.

    5. While loaves are rising, preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.  When loaves are ready to go into the oven, use a sharp knife ( lightly spray your knife with cooking spray to prevent dragging) to make a few slashes in the top.  Make each cut about 1/4-inch deep at a 30 degree

    angle.

    6. Bake loaves for 25 minutes, or until they are golden brown.

I usually brush butter over the loaves when they come out of the oven.

      350° for 25 minutes
