  1. I need your opinions!

My sister and I were talking yesterday about SHTF situation and although we each have a family member in their late 80's obviously we are including them in our group. We have concluded that since I have the house and am out of NY City, it is obvious this will be the BO location. My group is growing! So, since only God actually knows when SHTF will happen, there are now 8 in our core group. I guess it makes sense to can in Quarts vs. Pints? Hmm, now that I am thinking more, even if we lost our seniors, quarts makes more sense since more than half our group are adult males.

  2. Today and tomorrow I am making Jam. My mom is actually coming and I got 4 10# bags of chicken leg quarters for less than $5 a bag, I am going to teach my mom who is a REAL CHEF how to can meat next week!!! We are going to get apples too and do that apple pie filling/applesauce/apples with onions that I have been thinking about too. Who knows, maybe she will get bitten by my bug and buy me 20# of HB and I will can that up too!!??

  3. I will start canning tomorrow - I have 10lbs of mixed berries for jam, then I am going to go get a few bushels of apples, time for apple pie filling and apple sauce, (I haven't done any of this since before my husband passed away 2 years ago) then hamburger and some chicken. With mom not coming out for her extended stay, I need to stay busy so I don't completely loose my mind! If I didn't have company coming for dinner tonight, I'd start NOW! I was really looking forward to doing this with my mom, she has never canned before!

  4. Hurray! I can't wait to see your pics

In a few weeks my sister and I are going to start sanding the floors in my house and then we will stain them. In the meantime, I am waiting to get a contractor (my original one bailed on me!) to come and install a new vintage door I got at a salvage/antique place we found. It is solid walnut and we will stain it with 7 coats of tung oil!

With my mom moving in before Christmas, we are sanding floors in 99% of the house (not my room yet) and re-staining them, and painting the remaining 3 rooms in the house. My sister also wants a new ceiling installed in my shop in the garage (we will finish the shop this winter). We will then have space to store some of mom's stuff that she won't be using in my house.

Since buying my home, I have learned to love learning to DIY things to fix up my home. Maybe someday it will actually be finished, but since when I bought it I didn't have a heating system and now I do, I think I've accomplished a lot!

  5. Hi Everyone!

It's been a LONG time since I've been here - probably not since I bought my home 16 months ago? Things have really changed.

So we have been in the house almost 18 months. It's a work in progress, but we have heat! (no we didn't have a working heating system when we moved in)

One son, moved out and got engaged, got a good job and is planning an returning to school. He wants to become and underwater welder.

My younger son is still driving me crazy - I have learned that I can't fix him, I can't make the good decisions for him, he's been in and out of court, it's up to him now. He is safe in God's hands.

My mom is 85 and suffers from Trigeminal Neuralgia - it's called the Suicide disease because the pain is so bad people contemplate killing themselves.

MOM IS COMING TO LIVE WITH ME!! We are preparing to sand and refinish floors and paint her room. LOTS AND LOTS of work is scheduled to start ASAP and when I get done my house will be almost exactly what I want it to be if it were compleated all except for the country kitchen I want.

oh, and Mom has Dementia - it's going to be interesting! But I will NOT put her away in a place no matter how good it could possibly be for someone else to take care of her. She is MY Mom and I am going to take care of her just the way she always takes care of me.

That's the news in a nutshell for now. I hope to be spending more time here in the future, I swear I'm going to write myself a note and stick it to the computer!

I have missed all of you and I can't wait to get back into the swing of things again

  6. Thanks everyone. My son is 17 and said he would stay at the hospital with me just like I stayed with my husband when he was dying. . . lovely thought! The 14 yr old leaves to go back to school tomorrow. So far I am feeling ok now. Lots of tea and soft foods. If the nausea kicks up again though, I am going to the ER at the hospital my dr. practices at.

  7. I will if I don't feel better - unfortunately I can't leave my kids home alone and one is home from school for a long weekend. . . I will have to be unconscious to be taken by ambulance if something gets critical. . . SCARY thoughts. Will put the kids on alert just in case. I don't want to scare them but if I need them in an emergency, I will have to depend on them.

  8. so I have a hernia, just lovely. . . but the vomiting and constant nausea are driving me nuts and I have to wait 2 weeks to have a CT Scan and see the dr again. I am going on a soft diet, then if I am still sick, will go to liquid. Anyone have any thoughts on how to deal with a mean hernia that is strangling my intestine until I can see Dr. again and get the surgery scheduled. (Wish he wasn't waiting soooo long?!)

  9. So as many know, I am now a widow, one of the good things that comes from that is that my old worn out vehicle will be replaced soon. (my husband wanted that and made plans to have it taken care of before he passed).

I have decided that although I have had mini-vans since 2003, it's time for a change. My boys are getting older, I won't be hauling them and their junk around as much and it's time for a 4WD vehicle. Why? Several reasons.

    1. I HATE DRIVING IN SNOW - I just don't feel confident and safe anymore, I am not as young and confident as I once was.

    2. If things get worse, which we know they can at any time, I don't want to be stuck not being able to get around people stuck in traffic, if I an drive off road, I sure as heck will.

    3. I have always wanted a Jeep - so that is our first choice. We will what our friend comes up with, We are thinking Grand Cherokee

So, my question to you is IF YOU HAV A 4WD, WHY DO YOU LIKE IT AND WHY WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT? IF YOU HAVE A JEEP, DO YOU LIKE IT, IS IT RELIABLE AND WOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT??

THANKS LADIES, I NEED TO GET MY INFORMATION FROM SOURCES I TRUST!!!!!

  10. We are having snow here now (Noon Wednesday) in Central PA near the Capitol, and it's coming down pretty steady. I have to get to work tomorrow (I OD'd the checkbook :banghead: ) and I need to get my kid back to his pick up location to get back to school :(. Glad there is lots of food here so I don't have to worry about any of that should my house be overrun with teenagers (somehow they manage to get through just about anything!).

    Stay safe and warm everyone

  11. I am so sorry for your loss.

Listen to what the Holy Spirit tells you. If you can, give yourself some time and space. Wait a few months before making any long term decisions (financial or otherwise) if you can. Paying off high-interest debt is about the only exception to that I would make.

Thanks HazelStone I plan to pay off ALL debt as soon as possible after the new year, and I desperately need a newer car. I have my husband's dearest friend (like a brother) watching out for that for me. Funny thing (only not so funny) I had a headlight die on the car last night, fortunately it's a minor thing but what a PITA to have to deal with just days before getting a newer car! The only reason I am taking care of it (other than the fact that I don't want a ticket) is that I drive my son's girlfriend home at night along the highway, AND I am hoping to go to Maryland for a few days next week.

As the snow falls outside my window, I am dreaming of a 4wd vehicle now instead of the thought of another van. :)

  12. I was widowed after 42 years...so sending you my hug & my prayer..."Psalm 57:2" for you.

You were certainly blessed!! We had 1 year, 4 months and 2 days married but just over 3 years together. I cherish the memories of those special days.

  13. Thank you ladies for your prayers and support. I know this will take time, I am just grateful for the short time we had together. Scott blessed my life and made it so wonderful, even on our worst days, I wouldn't trade one second of what we went through because I know he loved me. . .

  14. I know I haven't been here in a while. As some of you may recall, my dear Scott was diagnosed with stage IV Lung Cancer in June. He did some radiation in July, a few months of chemo, ended up in the hospital with seizures, blood clots in his legs, a bleading ulcer that put him in ICU and then home with Hospice in October. I took care of him as much as I could, fortunately we didn't need round the clock care until the last 2 weeks of his life.

On December 7th Scott passed away.

Fortunately, I am blessed that my sister was here with me when he passed and she stayed the week up until his memorial. Her husband came out from NY, my youngest son came home on his 14th birthday from school, and my older son was here with me too. Scott always took care of me while he was alive and he promised he always would. I am blessed to be able to pay off all debt, buy a much needed newer vehicle in a few more weeks and will be looking for a small home to purchase.

I know I am more of a "lurker" but I hope to change that in the future as I try to make plans to create a different life. I hope to go back to school, but to study what, I have no clue. I just want to get OFF SSDI ASAP! No matter what direction I end up going in, I am trusting my Heavenly Father to guide me. Scott is watching over me, of that I am sure.

    Thank you for your prayers

  15. With my DH being so sick and not expected to last much past next June if we are lucky, I am considering a move. I have always wanted to get a small piece of rural land and homestead, but thinking of doing that alone isn't something I would want to do as a widow. However, I would like to find a small piece of rural land and have my garden and live a more simple life. So, if you could live anywhere with those ideas in mind, where would you go? PLEASE BE SPECIFIC ON STATES AND AREAS SINCE I AM SERIOUSLY LOOKING INTO A MOVE NEXT YEAR. . . PROS AND CONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED TOO!!

    Thanks everyone!

  16. My garden didn't produce even the slightest amount of what I was hoping for despite lots of new soil and tons compost etc... (hubby built me raised beds too!). Kale seems to be the bumper crop so far. Grape tomatoes and getting some green beans. Rosemary and lettuce/arugula are pleantiful and I've made Pesto a few times, but that's about it. Maybe the year after next will be better - with DH being so sick, I am not even thinking of a garden for next summer.

  17. I told my 16 yr old about this today when he was moaning about not having hours to work at McDonalds (because he called off almost a whole week and they cut him, I told him he should be grateful he has ANY house). He said "Mom, that's crazy!" I told him that he needs to wake up and look around, these professionals with educations are getting paid what he is getting paid and he doesn't even appreciate the job he has and still expects me to do a lot of stuff for him. I told him that my DH just went to 50% salary on disability and he responded with "I guess that means I shouldn't ask for money for clothes for school, huh?" UM, yeah, that's about the size of it!! I definitely am grateful for my local police department who come whenever I call them and actually (due to my kids) have my phone number memorized and we are on a first name basis already! (OK, SO MAYBE THAT'S NOT SUCH A GOOD THING!!).

  18. This sure made memories come back. 25 years ago, we went to a lumber yard and my 6 yr. old son and said for me, rather loudly, to come look at some thing he had never seen, know what it was or didn't know how to turn it on. There was a machine that had bottled cokes going up and down the side with a door on it. It would not do anything. The men there got a good laugh but he at least got a free coke. Then they took him over to the 'puzzle' coke box (where you had to pull it thru the maze.)--another free coke. When he goes back in a few weeks he wants to go show his little one.

At high school where I was a secretary, we had an old fashioned black phone and an avocado phone later which was described as pukey. More than once, the kids didn't know what it was or how to use it and why there were no buttons on under the numbers. When they got hold of a parent , they told them all about it. I heard alot of cool and neato.

How about kids being amazed about not having remotes for tvs.

PS--I knew the strawberry was for sharpening needles, but I didn't know what was in it. :laughkick:

I remember the coke machines with the soda bottles on the sides, but not the maze one, I too remember the black dial phones from my chilhood. It was special when the black one was replaced with a yellow one in the kitchen, and I almost still remember my mom getting THAT replaced with a touchtone phone!

  19. My mom still has my grandmother's tomato but it doesn't have a strawberry on it. I bought myself a new pink tomato for pins when I got a sewing machine for Christmas and it has a strawberry, now I need to take some sewing lessons! I can't even thread the needle, I haven't sewed in 34years since in high school!

Fortunately, my 16 yr old and my 13 yr old sons will use the iron and ironing board when they want to impress a girl! :)

I miss the old metal ice trays, so much more sturdy than these silly plastic ones.

I miss the pasta machine my mom had too, I think she may have given me parts of an old one, but not sure if DH didn't toss it since there were parts missing :(
