  1. So this year I am determined to do more serious canning (so far I have only done Jams and apple sauce, apple pie filling and apples for pork). This year I am planning a bigger garden and praying it will do well, good soil, some good compost and lots of room between plants, although I am thinking of going more on the square foot side since I may get more yield and fewer weeds, if anyone knows if that is accurate or not, please let me know. I have heard of the reuseable canning jar lids and I am thinking of investing in some of them, as I also want to invest in about 500 canning jars too (I have a friend with a storage unit full of them that she is willing to part with a good portion of them). Anyway, I am wondering if anyone has used these types of lids and has any advice/feedback. They say that these lids can last for up to 20 years! Thanks to anyone who knows anything about these. I will wait for responses before I invest in about 100 of them.
  2. thanks - Friend!

  3. I'm type 2 and I am really bad about not watching my sugar levels at all - always getting yelled at by my mom - good thing she is 200mi away. Will go get some radishes and make up a bunch of veggies to snack on. Trying to loose weight and getting my sugars under control wouldn't be a bad idea and will really help too! Thanks for the info!
  4. OH HOW HAPPY I AM THAT I FOUND THIS FORUM AND ESPECIALLY THIS PARTICULAR POST. I Have had my eye on that canner from Walmart for about 6 months, if I hadn't read this post I probably would have missed that very important detail. Thanks so m uch, now to go in search of a canner with the weighted thingie
  5. WWWHHHHHAAAAAAAAA I AM SOOOOOO NOT ONE OF YOU YET!!!!!!! But I am planning on selling my diamond rings to get $ to get Food Storage and BOB supplies - hope that's a good start!??
  6. You have food in your pantry for people you rarely speak to.. including things you know they like to eat but you do not. You like estate sales because the elderly tend to have canning jars/kerosene lanterns/hand tools/wool blankets/sturdy utensils etc. OH WHAT A WONDERFUL IDEA!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH, I NEVER THOUGHT OF THAT AND WE ALWAYS HAVE ESTATE SALES HERE IN THE LANCASTER PA AREA, WHAT A GREAT LESSON YOU JUST TAUGHT ME!!
  7. OK everyone, I'm gonna get my Excaliber Dehydrator out of storage at my stbx's and start dehydrating I don't know why it wasn't my first thought, since I am LOOKING AT PURCHASING DEHYDRATED EVERYTHING!!!! Thanks to you, I have pleanty of ideas to start with. now the only problem will be finding a place to put it in my tiny tiny house. In my old place it held court on the counter in my kitchen at all times (I ran a gourmet dog food business but it didn't do well so I closed it). Oh yes, now that I have that covered, it's def. time to get that food sealer!! Can't put it off any longer. You are all soooo wonderful and helpful!!
  8. As a bride on a budget all those many years ago, I LOVED Bisquick, and I enjoyed making casseroles. Today I could probably get my kids to eat a Bisquick recipe, but they hate casseroles unless it's pasta. Thinking ahead to when shtf, will probably go home to Mom's in NJ. Being a chef, she HATES CASSEROLES AND WOULD NEVER EAT ANYTHING WITH BISQUICK. I guess she can do with less, she is always telling me that we eat way too much, ok, so yes, I eat when stressed, but my kids eat like birds unless they are at her house, but then again, she buys things like lamb chops, who wouldn't eat! I plan to be prepared for when her special foods run out, she says she will always have enough, but actually, and I don't mean to be rude, but I don't think she has a clue! Yes, she grew up during the depression and she knows about rationing gas and flour and sugar (my grandfather owned a bakery) etc... but she says I am taking my plans way too far out to left field, and that it won't get that bad again. She doesn't drive much so she can fill her tank for $20- not me!! I can't remember when I had a full tank, usually the first day after my payment hits my CC account. Oh well, at least I know I will be prepared thanks to all of you and all your wonderful advice. I am definitely planning on getting a Food Saver within the next month or so. Buying the stuff my boys like to eat and then storing it. Time to get those buckets again! (still kicking myself for dumping about 30 of them last year!! UGH!!!) Ciao Everyone! (uh yeah and chow too)
