  1. I agree! We had black mold hidden in our mobile home, which we bought while we were building our house. Plus formaldehyde and all other sorts of nasties are in mobile homes. We lost everything because the mold was widespread. We had to move and rent a home-could never finish our actual home. It was a complete nightmare. Mold can be a real problem with mobile homes, but that might now affect some as much as it did us )living in humid Florida!). We literally had to throw away anything with paper or fabric/so pretty much everything was gone. I would recommend saving and buying a small log KOA type cabin, which you would likely get for the same price/cheaper than a used mobile home. That has happened to us, too. We thought we had the problem solved and we were unfortunately wrong. We are throwing away quite a bit of stuff again this week from the latest damage. The only reason my preps were saved is I had nearly everything at the opposite end of the house. I have a family member coming tomorrow to tell me how expensive it might be to fix the damage (I don't even want to know). I want to move but can't afford to.
  2. This. My husband had no money skills when we got married, and he too didn't have a lot when he was younger. I'm in charge of finance although he is the one bringing in the money. At times he has argued about the budget, but for the most part he's always been on board. I wrote up all our bills and showed him we were in the hole, and that caused him to see the light. Your husband has to understand that he has an allowance and when its gone it's gone. Take away his cards if you have to. If he's not budging then a counselor or pastor needs to be spoken to. Tell him it's time to grow up!
  3. I shop at the restaurant supplies, the bulk bag of baking soda and vinegar is the same size as the ones at Costco and actually more expensive. I wish they'd make the baking soda bags bigger! I go through so much of these two items too.
  4. Listening to hair cut prices I am very glad I have long hair so I don't have to worry about that. I cut the husband's hair, so we save there. I don't usually find very good coupons on our receipts - they are usually just for restaurants we can't afford anyways around here. I always try to look though! Sometimes you can find coupons on the counters too that they are supposed to be handing out and don't. Always look for those!
  5. All I can is I wish I had never had the bright idea to buy a used mobile home. The damage that was hidden was more than we could chew.
  6. I grew up in the country, moved to the big city at 18, and I'm a big honkin' both places if I am alone and it's dark. Even daylight I won't go out into the woods without the dogs. I have to have my husband by my side or the dogs or I'm not budging. I've never been able to understand the city people who walk at night with headphones on listening to music. I used to see it all the time. I'd be terrified someone would come up behind me and I'd be too distracted by the music to notice.
  7. If you are planning to go off grid - how are you planning to cook/bake? That would help you get to the right choice for how to eat your home. You may want to kill two birds with one stone, for a lack of a way to put it. If you're going to cook with propane then it makes sense to go propane for your heating. While the appliances can eat a lot of propane, you could also run a fridge. Since you're talking security, keep in mind that if someone does spot you and you do decide to put in an above ground tank that they could blow it to pieces and there went your way to heat and cook. Something to think about. I'm not sure where you are building of course, but if you're planning solar remember even in the best of locations some days can be too overcast to get much going. Make sure you have a backup way to cook and a back up way for your back up way.
  8. From what I understand, Blogger is easier to start off with than Wordpress, but if you're planning to go off and running make good money, you'll want to switch to the paid Wordpress site and get a .com down the road. You can also make money selling "posts" (I think they call them sponsored?) and doing reviews of products you get from the companies themselves to keep in exchange for the post.
  9. Opinion Outpost and Survey Spot are two other good ones, both pay immediately to PayPal or Amazon when you get to cash out ($10). I've done both for many years as well as most of the others listed up above. I also do SuperPoints but that one is a time consuming PITA and Memolink takes FOREVER if you don't do surveys. I focus on Swagbucks the most myself, make a good amount from them.
  10. I like the lattice and vines idea - I'll have to head over to Lowe's and check the prices out. If anyone asks, I could just say we are trying to make the yard look nicer for putting it on the market in a few years. (more like tomorrow if I could) Frankly... I don't trust anyone in this park at all. I know there are a lot worse parks out there, but there has been a fair share of problems involving police here. We have a nice shed, but we keep most of the tools and things in here because I know what would happen. I do have assorted "in plain sight" weapons in every room plus a few odd other toys. It's just the husband and I here, no family close, so when he is at work I am all alone except for the dogs - who are too cute and cuddly. The cats are better at intruders and letting me know if they hear something. (No big dogs allowed, or I'd have one) And... it was pretty creepy, because I thought the large bush in the front yard blocked their view from our house. I have always tried to hide any preps we were bringing in, using boxes or bags or waiting until dark, but now I worry. They are not the first people to make observant comments, either. Another neigbor made a comment about our receiving a lot of mail and packages last year, and another one commented about a family member who had been visiting. It makes me wonder who else is watching us.
  11. We live in a single wide in an older trailer park. We don't feel safe here, but until we finish getting some of our debt down, we're stuck here. The trailer next to us was taken out today, and now there is a big hole where basically we're exposed to a lot more people, including near the park entrance. We do have a solid wooden fence all around our yard, but it doesn't hide everything - especially our deck because the park isn't flat. Any ideas for getting more privacy that won't break the bank or catch a lot of attention? I am at a loss. I am worried for my apple tree and of course other things. I know the neighbors are watching us, because someone remarked yesterday how great it was that we work together - when we don't. They must have realized I never leave the house without my husband.
  12. My microfiber cleaning rags I actually had gotten lucky and won a gift certificate that I used to buy them. It gave me a "jump" towards just using rags. Now I also chop up clothing into rags. I just cut those, I don't bother sewing the edges on them. Unless there is something super icky on them, I wash them with anything else that's going in the wash. I keep a batch in a pretty bin on top of the fridge for my kitchen ones that are the nicest looking ones. When they start to look too dingy, they make their way to the bathroom, where I have an old baby wipes tub that I keep them in. Then when they are about to die, I give them to my husband to use for outdoor projects. I haven't purchased paper towels in several years. I do have a hidden roll for in case of (contagious) emergency though.
