  1. We have a wood burning stove for emergencies. Our heaters are natural gas but you flip a switch and they are propane. I like it that I have options
  2. I plant in either fall or spring. Whichever. You don't have to have two of a lot of the new self pollinating trees. I haven't really been able to tell any difference in trees planted in th fall and spring.
  3. I order from Ed all the time, love them. They are quick and good products. I have a lot of their food in my cellar!! I have only ordered a coupleof things from honeyville so I'm not sure about all of their stuff. I have always wanted to order from Walton but the shipping cost seem extreme. I have ordered form aayoob before and love some of their stuff (ESP the Ezekiel grains ) . I also order from augasten farms for the morning moos.
  4. I find all kinds of preps at garage sales and auctions, they are great for canning jars, tools, "old timey" kitchen stuff etc!!!
  5. I had never heard of her, how interesting!!!
  6. We get a lot of hail here. (texas) and a lot of people put metal grids over their skylights and such. We had thought about doing something like that to a greenhouse as well, but for starters we just want to try the plastic. Maybe later we will do the glass thing with the grating over it, but not at first That is a good idea for the chicken wire since we have a lot of wind here also, will have to check into that!!! I am still so excited.
  7. I just finished watching the show extreme cheapskates. I thought I was watching it to get ideas, instead I was amazed at how much money they were wasting... They showed a man who washes his paper plates and paper towels...we haven't had a paper product in this house for years They showed a man who goes one week every six months without spending money, but he had to spend money the last day on food, I promise we could go years without spending money on food in this house!!! They showed a woman who has cloth toilet paper. We have been a family cloth family for several years now They showed a woman who bathes her kids in the same water, but the tub was full...we learned at an early age that you can get clean in a lot less water than that A man who gets food off of other peoples plates at restaurants when the people are done. I thought that was disgusting, but why was he in a restaurant at all??. A man who refills his ketchup bottles with the little packets, we have used those for years. A man who dumpster dives, been there, done that. A woman who dumpster dives for food,...totally gross if you ask me. A man who barters for food in restaurants, once again, why is he in a restaurant at all? A man who hasn't bought clothes in years. A man who rides a bike everywhere and doesn't own a car. A man who goes all over town looking for change on the ground I know this probably goes along with the saving a penny thread, but what does your family do that might get you on this show???
  8. Soooooooo, hubby tells me the other day that I can pick what I get for Christmas thisyear. ......soooooo, I decided on a greenhouse!!! I have wanted one for a long time!! BUT. I don't know anything about them. I have decided to do a hoop house with the plastic for a roof due to our hail storms. (of course I would love a glass one, but it would be very impractical at this time). I figure this way, if a hail storm comes through,I can just put more plastic up, without having a huge expense of fixing glass. We have decided to build a couple of them (mainly because of where I want to put them, two or three small ones would fit much better than one large one) Does anybody have one or know someone who does. ? Any advise??? Any dos and donts??? Any good books on the subject?? Any and all help is needed!!!
  9. When we lived in Louisiana, we lived about a mile into the woods, you could not see our house from the road, most people didn't even know the house was there, our driveway looked like a forest road. People ALWAYS said things Ike that to us. I never understood it I guess it's just peoples perceptions, and it was fine with me that people were scared to come down our road!!
  10. They are hard squares like bouillon cubes. I press them with a spoon and they crumble
  11. I am totally addicted to them!!!! I cook a lot of Mexican, so i use the cilantro a lot!!!! The onion and garlic are also great!!!! FYI. I fund them in the Mexican section at our local Walmart.
  12. We got our first freeze this morning!!! I love love love winter!!!!
  13. I do omc!!! I love it!!! Our nearest resturant is 14 miles away and hubby works late mostof the time, so I always have a lot of meals in the freezer. My dd moved home recently and was going to go a month until her first paycheck so I made h enough meals to last the month. It was a wonderful feeling!!! I usually do a chicken day, a beef day, and a couple of dessert days when I do it. I can't believe I didn't do it when I was working!!!!
  14. Angel food went bankrupt. Some local churches here do similar things on a smaller scale, maybe you can find one of them
  15. I LOVE these!!! They are awesome!! I was upset the other day when I was at SAMs and they didn't have any. Good to know they still carry them. I store mine in a five gallon bucket. You can fit two boxes in one. I don't know if that is the best way, but it works for me
  16. Just in time for hajj. So all those people can carry it back home
  17. We have these boxes of pieces and trimmings around here. They are wonderful. They go on sale a few times a year so I snatch them up and repackage them into manageable portions. That's the only way I will but bacon, it is too expensive by the pound
  18. The challenge is fun isn't it deerslayer? I suppose that means I don't have much for excitement in my life but I do find it fun. Does that mean I'm not exciting either?????
  19. Supper tonight is gonna be sloppy joes ( using ground venison and hamburger buns that I got from the day old store) and augratin potatoes made from potatoes that I got on sale and dehydrated. Dessert will be some Amish friendship bread. YUMMY Hubby will take the leftovers in his lunch tomorrow!!!! I have started challenging myself to see how little I can spend on meals and still eat like we are used to. It has been a fun and challenging personal game that has helped me save a lot of money
  20. We stay low by hunting for the majority of our meat. I Hardly ever buy anything unless it's on sale, then I stock up by the case. If you eat a lot of meat, consider getting a half of a beef at a time, it really is a lot cheaper in the long run. I have started stretching our budget by adding in more side dishes and lots more beans. A small steak with three side dishes will fill up most people.
  21. I just finished dehydrating 100+pounds of potatoes. Maybe you can do that too. Do yOu have a dehydrator??
