  2. We did fairly well this year on potatoes. We dug them up yesterday and laid them out to cure but we had an unexpected storm early this morning and they all got washed off. I hope they will store ok being clean. We ended up with 80 pounds of reds and 50 pounds of gold.

  5. martianchick: Are they much larger than regular pins? I have some that are white (6 to a pack) I think they are called jumbo clothes pins. They are huge and do look like jumper cable clamps. I LOVE them for hanging out jeans.
  6. This is a very interesting video. Something to keep an eye on. At the end the guy does mention buying silver, just as a passing comment. He is a Christian, sotake it for what it is worth. Better viewed full screen http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfOfBrNUOGA&feature=player_embedded#at=29

    Some Cajun DIY videos

I had this posted under Nature's Pharmacy but there are 2 pages of different videos of neat things taught by a cajun. Could come in handy, like home made fish hooks from willow thorns, how to make rope out of milk weed, etc. http://www.electsake.com/survival_how-to.htm

  12. I just checked my stock of Potassium Iodide that I have had for years and it expired Dec 2010. I assume it may still be good but as cheap as it is I reordered more today. Many sites are already out of stock or are selling some with 2012 exp dates at 9.99 each. Amazon has some in stock but at 5.00 for a 14 day supply I suspect the exp date is not far off either. I ordered it anyway and will try to get more later with better exp dates. Don't know how long Amazon will have these. http://www.amazon.com/Life-Extension-Potassium-Iodide-Tablets/dp/B000JKTII6/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&am
  13. Martha: We have one of those syphon pumps and although it is cheaply made it does work to get water out of the 55 gal drums.

  20. I was asked a few months ago to give a class on homesteading. I call it Introduction to Homesteading and briefly tell them about the many aspects of it. I do it on 2 days. Part I is 2 hrs and all about planning a garden, soil amending, composting, seed saving & storing. Part II is 2 hrs and covers canning, dehydrating, food storaage etc. I have given the class 3 times now and the number of participants are really growing. I had 32 people in my last class! People also want to go deeper on the individual topics, so I am now also doing just a Dehydrating class & a separate Cannin
  21. Virginia: Most people have to amend their soil. Someone in your area must sell gardening soil by the yard. We get 2 yards here for about 35.00. It fills my husband's trailer overflowing. You can also improve your soil by planting buckwheat as a cover crop about 30 days before you plan to plant crops. It helps to smother out weeds and you turn it over into the garden and it provides added nitrogen and nutrients. You can also add grass clippings etc to improve the soil. It takes a few years of working a garden to get good soil. Keep working on it now so it will be better next year
  22. I got a Sun Oven this past summer but have only used it a few times so far. I made Jiffy cornbread the first time and it did not rise. Perhaps the baking powder had expired, not sure. The 2nd time I made a beef dish that came out "ok". I need to get on the ball and learn how to use it!!
  23. I received an email today from a site where I was a former paying member. This lady sells alot of prep stuff (dehydrated foods and equpment) on her site. She said that almost all of her dehydrated foods were going to triple VERY soon. She is so outraged at this increase that she is offering her current members to order whatever dehydrated items that they want and she will give them her wholesale cost on them just to do something nice to help her members quote " in this scary situation". This is a BIG red flag for me.
  24. It's been years since I have crabbed, but our nets were round. I have also used the string method with a scoop net once or twice.
