Is it advisable to solar cook in a pressure cooker? Sorry if this is a dumb question. -
I've lived in a mobile home in the woods and in the "city". The country trailer had plenty of snakes and mice. I mean rattlers and moccasins. They hide from the heat underneath. The squirrels played football on the rooftop with the pecans that constantly fell during winds, pine cones made a bigger racket, raccoons were even worse. Rain storms were auditory experiences. We had storm windows so it wasn't too cold in winter but, you can only cool a tin box so much in summer. In the city trailer it was hot in summer, cold in winter and not insulated for sound. We were always complaining about the couple on one side arguing and the guy on the other side beating his wife. If the neighbors across the road played their stereo we were bombarded with R&B one direction and speed metal the other. We could hear every step taken and every door opened or closed by other family members. There was practically no storage so many trailer park residents bought storage sheds since there were no garages. Like I said before plenty of rodents and when it caught fire due to a problem in the fuse box it burned to the ground in less than 15 minutes. My dad was sleeping on the couch 7 feet from the front door and got out in time. Nobody ese was home. The fire inspector told the complex manager f my dad had started that fire e would not have made it out alive. HTH!

I thought that myself. What could we substitute?

No. You have to hang it in the roof and putty it in. It's a low cost solar tube. LOL!

*~Uses: The corn bags are used as ice packs or heati
GirlNextDoor replied to Dee's topic in Pinching Pennies
My feeble brain is working...I wonder if you make a corn bag with a "flap" like a pillow sham that folds over the end if it will it keep the corn inside, yet, still allow you to remove it and wash the bag. Example: two rectangles sewn together on three sides with a square on the end of one side attached at the top and two sides of one rectangle. Fill the rectangles with corn and flip the flap over to close. To wash flip the flap back the other way and pour out the corn. -
Tannic acid--not too much. Lethal dose is about 6% of your body weight. http://tannicacid.info/ Remember this big old, long thread nobody really read? http://chestofbooks.com/health/materia-med...annici-Tan.html Kaolin clay http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/drug-information/DR600195 http://www.medications.com/drugs/kaopectate-obsolete You have to eat about a quart of plain, non fat yogurt to get the same effect as the lacto baccilus in the pharmacist's refrigerator.

The quickest way to "purge" shrimp, crawdads or etc is to put them in milk then rinse with water. I wonder if you can do this to worms. Even so I still ain't eatin' any!

Page 5 has a section called "Snake Free Areas" that says do not pick up a snake without severing the head. A family story goes like this: When my grandparents were first married my Grand dad was out in the back yard mowing and ran over a water moccasin. the head was bouncing "chasing him. He ran away from it remembering to zig and zag but forgot to let go of the mower handle. After it finally died he went into the house and was pouring sweat, shaking and standing at the kitchen sink getting a drink of water when my grandmother came into the kitchen, looked out the kitchen window at the big old mess my Grand Dad made of the grass and asked in shock, "Is THAT the way you mow the lawn?"

A chicken tells you what color eggs, by the color of her ears
GirlNextDoor replied to PoGo's topic in Homesteading
The mental picture i had was me squatting down beside a chicken and carefully brushing the feathers aside, leaning in closely to get a good look--just before the chicken squawked and pecked me right in the middle of the forehead. -

Chickens have EARS???!!! -
Maybe I remember incorrectly (big surprise, huh?), but I think Violet said dried meat was not good because you can get sick. I THINK she said only to make beef jerky and there is a specific way to do it.

20 ounce soda bottles. I live in an apartment that will not allow bird feeders and I can't garden so mini green houses are out. When i am a big grown up homesteader I will be able to make free solar tube lights like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y5m9pymx2eA Here is a solar heater for daytime made of empty soda cans painted black: http://ecotechdaily.com/2009/07/01/free-he...some-soda-cans/

Food stretching experiment

hey were all soft enough today so I put them in my blender (Magic Bullet) and liquefied them, Skin, bones, etc & a bit of broth. It went great on the dog's kibble and they really seemed excited about it. Plus, with the broth/stock/ dunno what to call it already hot instant store brand stuffing I picked up on clearance was a snap. Add a stick of real butter to an 8x8 pyrex dish, add 3 cups broth and two boxes of stuffing mix. Wait 5 minutes and Viola! -
I have a question. Since all the families are going to be so far apart how will they communicate? I doubt there will be internet.

Annaarchy, just FYI, sandalwood is more rare than it used to be. I sort of remember from a lecture in the Texas Soapmaker's Convention a few years back the speaker saying a few years ago there was a tsunami in Indonesia? ( I could be wrong about the origin) where a lot of sandalwood came from and sandalwood forests were destroyed. The prices shot way up. A tree has to be a certain strain and older than 40 years to create sufficent oil to warrant it's destruction. Leah, tell it all. I am comepletely ignorant.

Food stretching experiment

I'm boiling chicken bones, skin and fat to make stock, so, i decided to see how long it takes the bones to soften if I cook them on 25% power on my electric range. -
So 5 or 6 grams is a serving? That would be easy. It isn't very much.

I'm not sure if bathing in onons has anything to do with the fact onions contain natural sulfur compounds. Can someone who understands chemistry tell me id onions kill germs. I DO know an ancient technique for "purifying the air of evil spirits around the sick and wounded has to do with burning incense which creates a carbolic acid mist in the atmosphere.http://www.freepatentsonline.com/4264606.html
