  1. Not to long ago I bought a rusty cast iron dutch oven at a yard sale. They were asking $25 for it, and I asked them if they would accept $15 because I was not sure if I could get the rust off. They gladly accepted my offer. Yay me! I took it home and just used plain ol' sand paper to remove the rust. Worked like a charm. Greased it real good with shortening and stuck it in a warm oven. Looks great now.
  2. Peppermint. Now why didn't I think of that? My husband even mentioned planting it around our house to keep the mice out. Duh! Got any suggestions for keeping cats out of my garden? They seem to think it is their litter box ~ ugh. Oil to release snakes from a glue board? Smart! Are you just naturally skillful? In a crisis, I want you for my neighbor! Have you ever considered moving to Kentucky? coM, that is a monstrous pile of wood! How long did that take to put up? I guess the heat from the fire would smoke the snakes/mice out. You have a great set up. The main thing we are concerned with is our small children and the neighborhood kids who come to play with my younger children.
  3. My husband and I are in the process of having a wood burning stove installed in our basement. Naturally we are putting up fire wood to be used for the next winter, but one of our concerns is that copperheads and black widows like to make their homes in piled wood. I'm looking for suggestions on how to prevent this. One idea I had was to lay a tarp on the ground and place the logs in the middle. Then bringing the corners to the top and secure shut ~ only leaving a small opening to allow the wood to breath. I'm not sure if that would even work, but it is all I could think of. Any other thoughts or ideas?
  4. I love the orange juice can idea. I think I will do that one; however, I came across this the other day and put it in my favorites. I think it is a really neat idea and cheaper then buying them commercially. You would have to have a side cutting can opener though ~ which I don't have. http://www.instructables.com/id/Diversion-Safe--Can-Safe/ ETA: I also saved this site. http://www.keepingwomensafe.com/products.asp?categoryid=60
  5. One thing I just did was fold all of my plastic shopping bags from Wal-Mart and other stores. I can't take credit for this idea ~ I actually read it somewhere here on the boards, but for the life of me I cannot find it. The orginal poster said to fold your bag like a flag, but I just kept halving mine until I had a long narrow strip. Then I rolled it up from end to end and put them in bundles of 10 and secured each bundle with a rubber band. I love this idea because it saves so much space. I have come to depend on these little bags for a lot of things, so if the you-know-what hits the fan, I figure it may be a while before I will get anymore, so I am going to add some to my preps.
  6. Dropped by to say hi to my fellow FCF wife and mom! Hi!
