  1. We buy local items: meat, eggs, honey, maple syrup, organic produce at ones we've gone to. One we went to this year, they now have the health dept. there every time, checking everyone's paperwork, doing temp. checks on the cold stuff, snooping (my opinion), ect. The vendors have fees for that, too. There were craft stuff vendors, but it seemed to me those tables weren't busy at all. As the economy worsens, maybe people are purchasing things they need (food stuffs) more than something they'd consider a luxury/item they like but don't need? Even be careful with selling handmade items. This is even sad to say: Did you know cloth reusable menstrual pads are considered a medical device by the FDA and people/companies selling them have to register with the FDA and pay a yearly fee? I had no idea until this week.
  2. Euphrasyne, Happy Birthday! Hang in there. I know it is a lot to handle. You've had a very challenging year. I'm no where near where I need to be health-wise. It is even harder when looking at everything going on and knowing I can't do very much to prepare.
  3. Kappy, what are you doing about the squash vine borers? My DD loves squash, but we've never been successful with growing it due to those squash vine borers.
  4. Happy Birthday, Jeepers! I hope you are having a good time in Indy!
  5. Christianbook's site The Homeschool Compass has Free Printables. I'm interested especially in the Nature Study ones. https://homeschoolcompass.com/free-printables/
  6. For those who are getting the vaccine, please keep in mind there is a period of time where you are "shedding". I know the flu vax and measles vax shed as well. I used to be able to find info online about the time period for the shedding, but since people had questions about the Covid vax shedding, it looks like ALL info online concerning the shedding of vaccines is not there anymore.
  7. Dr. Malone: We Shouldn't Be Worried About Recent Monkeypox Outbreak https://deeprootsathome.com/malone-you-shouldnt-be-worried-about-monkeypox-outbreak/
  8. Becca, you're welcome for the link. I don't use their curriculum, but do buy their Henty books. I started off with the Hentys published by Preston Speed, but after I couldn't get those new anywhere (Preston Speed Publishing went out of business), I was glad to find someone else printing them in the USA. They also sell Nuclear War Survival Skills by Cresson Kearney, if anyone is looking for that in a bound book. https://www.robinsonbooks.com/collections/other/products/nuclear-war-survival-skills Blessedhomemaker, Little House in the Big Woods was our very first family read aloud. We've read through the series many times since! Miki, I have 1984 on our shelves, but I haven't read it yet.
  9. Becca, here's a chronological list of Hentys. https://www.robinsonbooks.com/pages/chronological-listing-of-g-a-henty-books
  10. Voted! Jeepers, there's a cute Little Golden book about gardening....Two Little Gardeners by Margaret Wise Brown.
  11. Our family read aloud is Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry. I don't know how I missed reading these books when I was growing up. I'm reading The Dragon and the Raven: In the Days of King Alfred by G.A. Henty. I really like Henty. We have a shelf of them. Awesome historical fiction.
  12. We blanched and froze yellow summer squash once. After freezing, it was sort of soggyish and lost all of the crispness. Dehydrating after blanching? Down on the 4th page here it gives some info on dehydrating: https://nchfp.uga.edu/how/dry/csu_dry_vegetables.pdf I checked UGA's site https://nchfp.uga.edu/ (their So Easy to Preserve book was one of the few Violet-approved canning books, so I would think their site is ok). Here's what they say about canning: https://nchfp.uga.edu/questions/FAQ_canning.html#24 Why is canning summer squash or zucchini not recommended? Recommendations for canning summer squashes, including zucchini, that appeared in former editions of So Easy to Preserve or USDA bulletins have been withdrawn due to uncertainty about the determination of processing times. Squashes are low-acid vegetables and require pressure canning for a known period of time that will destroy the bacteria that cause botulism. Documentation for the previous processing times cannot be found, and reports that are available do not support the old process. Slices or cubes of cooked summer squash will get quite soft and pack tightly into the jars. The amount of squash filled into a jar will affect the heating pattern in that jar. It is best to freeze summer squashes or pickle them for canning, but they may also be dried.
  13. Martianchick, for your mom. Miki, did you ever get your utility bill straightened out?
  14. I'm not just buying books, I'm building a home library.
  15. Jeepers, put on pants, too, for that shopping trip. We don't want them running you out of OH before you've packed everything up. It's in the 80s here and that feels so hot. Big temp swing from the beginning of the week when it snowed.
  16. Magnesium helps me. I'm magnesium deficient and magnesium helps us deal with stress (among hundreds of other things). I keep rereading The Magnesium Miracle by Dr. Carolyn Dean.
  17. We've had snow yesterday and today, but no complaints here as pollen and I are not on friendly terms. The weekend will be in the upper 70s. I bet that is going to feel hot.
  18. https://drivethruhistory.com/easter/ My family really likes Drive Thru History! It's not just for kids. DH and I enjoy watching them, too. Free, full episodes of Drive Thru History for Easter Episode 15: The Trial of Jesus Episode 16: The Crucifixion of Jesus Episode 17: The Resurrection of Jesus
  19. Miki, I'm glad you and your home are okay! I hope you can get some rest.
