  1. Yay for the mom and puppies! Yesterday was such a beautiful day. DS dug up about 1/2 bushel each of Minowasie (sp?)diakon radishes and Gold Ball turnips from where we had stored them in the ground. They are keeping SO much better than in previous years. Last fall, we put them in those black plastic collapsible produce crates in plywood lined holes about 4 ft deep. We could use straw except we'd have to buy it and it's really hard to find around here. Previous years, we just buried them in the dirt and the rotted whereever they touched the dirt. Anyway, DD and I prepared them buy scrubbing, peeling, shredding, blanching and freezing. We had 4 qts and 1 pt of the turnips and 5 qts of the diakon. We ate some for lunch too. They are really good sauteed. Even Mom likes the daikons and she hates them raw, even the little red radishes. I thought the turnips were the best and I don't like raw turnips or normally even cooked ones. These Gold Ball are the best turnips in my opinion. Worth eating!
  2. Thank you! I'll check that out.
  3. Thank for the reply. Hmm..no fairy-tale types for us! GLH wrote from the very late 1800s up to about 1949. Her books were "current" to the times. Mom likes her because she knows there will be no violence, no bad language, no sex, no occult, etc.
  4. Mom is legally blind so DD or I read to her every night. Her favorites are books by Grace Livingston Hill. We have almost all of the books she wrote and have read them all several times. Mom never gets tired of them but I was just wondering if there were other authors similar to her that wrote during the same time frame? I know there are all the Amish books but that's not really what I'm looking for. It is said the GLH actually invented the genre of Christian romance. Thanks for any suggestions.
  5. So sorry for you loss and the other stresses. I hope things get better for you soon. Glad the new pup is making daily progress.
  6. Prayers for little one and the family. Parents and grandparents suffer right along with the baby!
  7. Gravel has been spread and is paid for. Yay! I forgot to mention that I got our taxes done yesterday and it took all day long! I was using one of the free places on the IRS web site. It was so slow. It kept timing out while waiting for the next page to load up. Everybody in the US must have been trying to do theirs at the same time! Finally finished it with help from the Lord and from DS.
  8. We've been so busy! DD1 & DSIL came Mar 31-Apr 3 and helped us cut, split and stack most of two loads of logs. Then we got the rest of it done this week. What a blessing to get that done so quickly! We got the indoor plant light system set up and have started eggplant and sweet peppers (red, yellow and chocolate). Nothing has germinated yet. Waiting on a load of gravel for the driveway this morning.
  9. I remember not long ago when I learned that Bayer made more than aspirin too! I was surprised. Thanks for the link.
  10. I misspoke! I saw the numbers at the bottom and somehow my pea brain thought I had gone to the last page of the topic automatically. I don't even know why I thought that!
  11. You did it!! Thanks so much!
  12. Thank you for all your hard work to make the site nice for all of us! Something I noticed is that there seems to be no way to go directly to the last page of the thread. When I click on a thread title, it takes me to the first page and I have to click on the last page. Not a big deal but just a bit inconvenient.
  13. Y'all must be seeing things I'm not seeing! I don't have any tabs at the top of the page. I don't see any place to find smilies either. Ok, I see the emoticons int he reply box.
  14. Hope things go well for you and yours.

    I Miss...

I miss her too. Was just thinking about her this morning.
  16. We had such a hectic week last week. I had an appointment with Social Security on Tuesday at 9 am so we had to leave home at 7:30 am. to get there on time. Then we visited some friends in another town. They are part of our church family but since he had a stroke a couple years ago, they don't come often. We had a good visit, then went to yet another town to visit a church member in the hospital. So we didn't get home until after 5 pm. As usually happens the night after sitting in the car all day, my back hurt and I couldn't sleep. I only slept from 9:30 pm to 12:40 am. I could feel it too the next day! I was falling asleep at prayer meeting Wed night and DH kept elbowing me to wake me. Finally I whispered to him, "In three hours, I will have been awake 24 hours. Let me sleep!" He stopped poking me but by then I sort of woke up. We had a funeral to go to Wed afternoon. The 30 yo mom of 7 yo twin boys. It was so sad. My parents were lifelong friends of her grandparents and I went to school with her dad. She had Lupus and it had affected her heart and kidneys but it was still a shock. Her husband was away on a business trip and the boys found her in the bedroom floor. They called grandma and told her they couldn't wake her up. DH's cousin had died on Sunday and that funeral was Friday. We loved him dearly. DH did the eulogy and our family sang two songs. Our pastor developed a migraine just before the funeral. We and others prayed for him and he was able to do the service and sing a duet with his wife. God certainly answered our prayers! DS had a sermon to write and give at a church two hours away. I am SO glad we hadn't planned to sing because after the funeral Friday I got a terrible stomachache and wasn't able to go to the dinner for the family and friends. I just sat in one of the big recliners in the church foyer and rested. I didn't feel a whole lot better until the next morning. I figured it was stress because I tend to do that. But I sure didn't feel like getting up early and driving two hours to that church. So all in all, a very stressful week for us. Lots of work to do to catch up on all we didn't get done last week. It's time to get out the plant light stands and get eggplant and pepper seeds started. Tomatoes soon too. We haven't even inventoried our seed stash and ordered any. So...I'd better get to work! Hope everyone has a wonderful day!

  18. I'm so sorry. I'll be praying for them.
  19. WE2, equal parts of fresh lemon juice and honey worked very well for us. We would take 1 tsp at a time.
  20. (((Hugs))) We had the brain fog too. It was strange. I had such a hard time focusing on anything and keeping things straight in my mind. I was a little worried! I've felt better today and had a clear mind so it does get better!
  21. WE2 be really careful about starting work too quickly! DH and I felt better and stacked some firewood. Some symptoms came back with a vengeance!
  22. WE2, we are going into our third week of the flu. The 2nd week we felt a bit better as in able to eat without feeling too sick and having a bit more energy, then Mom and I seemed to take a cold on top of the flu. Two folks I know about both said they had it for 3 weeks. I have great empathy for anyone who has it! Wow Annarchy! Glad you survived that! Scary.
  23. Thanks Annarchy! Grr and Gunny will probably be fine. When we got Lady as a puppy we had Peaches who most decidedly did not want a young kid around disturbing her peace but Lady won her over and she would even play briefly. But when she was done, she was DONE. She would knock Lady down and stand on her chest, snarling. If Lady so much as opened her eyes, Peaches would snarl viciously. The first time I saw it, I was just about to chastise Peaches but then I saw Lady barely open one eye to check and close it quickly. She had Peaches' number. She would lie very still until the "lesson" was over, then Peaches would let her get up. It would last about 30 minutes and then Lady was trying to get her to play again. Now Lady as an old nearly 15, has the right to snarl at Mom's little terrier when she's tired of playing. He's six so isn't as playful as she was with Peaches.
  24. I never went to sleep until after 3:30 am. When I went back to bed, DH has such a horrible headache and earache that he was going crazy. After a couple of pain pills and cold cloths on the head he was able to sleep and I finally went to sleep. I tried to take a nap this morning but wasn't able to fall asleep. Mom and DD are fairly well but not able to eat much. Poor DH is having a horrible time. I helped him get a hot so9ak in the tub and a shower and put him back to bed. he just got up and ate about 1/2 cup of frozen fruit and a piece of toast, went back to bed. DS is fighting it now too.
