  1. I have heard that also Canned Nerd! lol I wouldn't be surprised if it were true.
  2. Thanks for all the replys. That is an great price for around here.
  3. I found Velveeta Cheese on sale for 2.99 for a 2 lb. box! I was wondering if anyone has ever stored this cheese without refrigeration! They sell it right off the shelf in the store and it says on the box to refrigerate AFTER opening. I'm wondering if I could store 4 or 5 boxes in a bucket with a gamma lid? that would probably last me a year.
  4. Thanks Annarchy, YOU ARE THE BOMB!!!
  5. I bought 40 lbs of leg quarters on sale for .39 a lb. It turned out 6 qts of bone in chicken, 9 pints of boneless chicken, and 2 qts and 7 pints of broth! Not bad for $16.
  6. Me too CG! I really hate to miss out this year, but not exactly sure when we will be moving. Long story...
  7. I bought some of the cilantro intending to try them in my salsa. I completely forgot about them until now! Oh well...maybe next year. I will try some of the other flavors now.
  8. Thanks CG! I wasn't following that one.
  9. You can get a free copy of Backwoods Home Magazine on your Kindle today only from Amazon. I tried to post a link, but since I already claimed my copy, the link was showing my personal info and saying I had already bought the book. Maybe you can find it on facebook or through Amazon.
  10. Our local Piggley Wiggley / Food Giant has an unusually good sale this week. 'Case Pack' and 'Gimme $5' sale. Red Gold Brand 'Rotel Type' Tomatoes are .29 a can. I bought 2 cases of these last year, and they are as good as reg Rotels. 50 lbs russet potatoes for 9.99, 6 lb. of navy, great northern or pintos for 7.88 (Sam's has a better price on pintos) Best Choice Mac& Cheese for 9.88 (24 box case) Iron Kids bread .99, and lots of other good buys. My link Not sure if that link will work, but it is www.foodgiant.com. They have stores in MS, AL, GA, TN, MO, KY, AR, and FL.
  11. Good to know WormGuy! I kinda have a fear of stored food ruining and my money being wasted. It keeps me from prepping like I really want to. I need to work on overcoming that feeling. I feel comfortable canning all that I can in jars, because I have been doing that all my life. But buying food to put up in buckets makes me nervous. Isn't that silly?
  12. Check out Chef Tess's version of Cheesy SOS Mix! http://honeyvillefarms.blogspot.com/2012/08/chef-tess-with-easy-cheesy-condensed.html I want to try this!
  13. I have been 'counting the cost' to see if I can afford to make some. I love Chef Tess, and her jars look so appetizing!
  14. Thanks for the input Deerslayer. I googled 'buy dehydrated hash-browns' to try to compare prices before I stocked up on them, and apparently a lot of people like them. A few were complaining that their stores no longer carried them. I hope your store was just out of them. They seem to be a good price, so I will definitely go back and stock up soon. I think the bucket will work fine for storage.
  15. I was making the Chicken Enchilada Casserole yesterday and ds came through and said that he wanted fried chicken. So I fried the fresh chicken and opened a quart of my home canned chicken for the casserole. They cleaned the casserole dish and I had leftover fried chicken! lol I think I'll try Salisbury Steak in the crock pot next!
  16. Has anyone else bought these dehydrated hash-browns from Sam's? I have picked up a box the last 2 times I shopped there. I have used them for a casserole and just plain hash-browns, and my family loves them! $5.95 for this 33 oz. box (fills a gallon jar with a little left over). Is this a good price? I got a new Emergency Essentials catalog today and theirs was $9.95 for a 31 oz. can. I haven't checked anywhere else. Would they store well in the box or should I use mylar and bucket?
  17. I had a lot of jelly that didn't set right last year! Maybe it was the pectin!! Never thought of that.
  18. DH took me back to Fred's and got 4 boxes of jelly jars for $4 each and 4 boxes of Sure-Jell for 1.90 each. I bought a quart bag of bulk fruit pectin for $2 from an Amish store when we went to Indiana last year. Now that dd has moved back home, I don't have a reason to go there now. I guess I need to check out prices and order some. ScrubbieLady, the wide mouth jars are Ball, and the reg. were Golden Harvest. Dee, Fred's is a Dollar Store. Maybe it's just a southern chain? They have the best prices on jars all year long. Mostly Golden Harvest brand and their reg. jar flats are always $1 a dozen. I've never had a problem with them.
  19. I don't know if all Fred's have the same sale or not, but ours has reg. mouth pint and quart jars for $4 a dz. and wide mouths for 4.50. Lids for .75. All other canning supplies were 25% off.
  20. I printed mine out and couldn't figure the numbering either. So I used my scrapbooking paper cutter to slice each page in half. Then stacked pages in numerical order, and put a staple (diagonally) on the top left corner. Works for me! I'm trying the Chicken Enchilada Casserole tonight!
  21. I know you are going to like the soup mix Peaceful. I decided to mix mine up while I was cleaning the kitchen tonight. (I did add some Tones freeze dried dried mushrooms to my mix.) It looked so good I decided to try it out. It tasted good but was a little thick to eat for soup, so I thinned it with about 1/4 cup of milk and 1/4 cup of chicken broth.( I had just boiled a chicken for a casserole for tomorrow.) It made the best soup! Now I will have to freeze the broth in 1/4 c cubes to have on hand for my favorite new soup!!
