  1. Euphresyne, that is not a bad price for rotisserie chicken. When we would buy them, I would make chicken and dumplings with the leftovers and would also manage to get a couple of chicken sandwiches out of it. We would get about 3 meals off of one chicken. Had half of a Boston butt in freezer, pulled that out yesterday and put in slow cooker. So today I will fix up something for dinner tonight with it in hopes I can get GS to eat dinner before work. Otherwise, he can heat it up when he gets home. He's pickier now than when he was little. It was so much easier to feed him then. Just fix fish and fries and he was good to go. Now he won't eat fish though he still likes it. Guess he got tired of it.
  2. Euphresyne, hoping your DH is doing much better now. Went to pick up RX this morning. Wanted to beat the traffic. Did good going to store but coming back there must have been something that happened heading toward interstate way. Traffic was backed all the way down road from James River. Don't know what happened but nothing coming from Harborview way. I was at light coming out of Harris Teeter parking lot and had to worm my way around cars trying to get under the light. They were blocking the traffic coming out of parking lot. should have waited till later. It was still a bit cloudy, and I was going to wash the living room window. got the shears off window and here comes the sun full force on windows, so now I will just wait till this afternoon when sun goes around side of house. Don't want the windows to streak when I wash them, and the sun will do that every time. So now trying to decide what I want to get into while waiting for sun to go down around that window. Harris Teeter did have quite a few turkeys starting at 99 cents up. Didn't see any turkey breast. Did some shopping for GS. Working on a box of foods for him to take with him when he gets his apt. Anything in freezer that he eats I will be filling his freezer up a bit as well. Also working on a box of personal items as well for him. That way he can hold on to his money for getting utilities turned on as he will have to pay a deposit. Getting out on your own can get pricey these days so want to help him as much as possible to get started. Don't want him moving back in with me after he is moved out. I love him but it's time to move out on his own. I'm the grandmother not the mother and father who should be trying to help him. Being on a fixed income has put a strain on my purse strings trying to help him with the foods he eats and such. I will get him going and then I am back to only what I normally buy. Not the specials he likes. He will learn on his own that sales are the way to go and use coupons when you can get them. Learn to eat food like normal people will help. He has a beer wallet and Champaine taste in high priced foods.
  3. Prices in all stores are getting worse by the week. I was thinking about not doing a garden next spring as I really need a break from all of it. The yard, house garden. I just need a good long rest. But with prices like they are I may be doing a garden again next year anyway. I hate going to Wal Mart but from what everyone is saying I better make a trip there. Maybe I can fill in holes cheap. And pick up a few things for GS. Started back on dining room and got that finished this afternoon. Then this evening I decided to haul all my appliances in from garage and put them in their new place. I have a cabinet on den side of kitchen that is a good size. So, after washing up and cleaning all the appliances, they went into that cabinet. That cabinet would be the dead space in corner where dishwasher is normally at the end of the bar and when we remodeled the kitchen 30 years ago, we had that section set up to open from den side. Much better that way. So, no more appliances in the garage. Packed up some things from that side of cabinet that GS will be able to use when he gets his apt. He's starting to become my Good Will place. Ran up to the Food Lion for a couple of things earlier and they have lots of Turkeys for half price. Only a few turkey breast but didn't look at the prices. Only looked at a couple of the whole turkeys and they had like 25.00 for 12.00. I don't need one so just checking things out. Need to head to Harris Teeter to pick up RX. But going to hold out till Thursday for senior discount. Every little bit helps. Trying to hold out a BJ's trip. I can get in trouble there. But do need to go before long.
  4. Those pies look great. I used to make a meringue pie every Thanksgiving and Christmas It was a tradition around here. But as family got smaller due to family deaths and then the kids growing up and moving away, I stopped making them as there were some diabetics in family with no will power. Might make one this Christmas though as DD and SIL will be coming here for Christmas. We are all trying to figure out new traditions now with all the kids grown and living in other states and with DH no longer with us. Sad times indeed. But new traditions and memories to work on and treasure.
  5. Never seen glow in the dark yarn before either. Interesting. Food Lion did get some turkeys in when I went to store last week but it wasn't many and were $2.89 a lb. I think. Haven't checked the ads for this week yet. Got dining room finished but will have to do another light cleaning on chandelier. It streaked from all the dirt and dust that was on it from construction. So will just clean it again and let it drip. GS cleaned main bathroom and washed his clothes when he got up this afternoon. And has been going through his clothes. He's trying to get them organized as to work clothes, and other clothes. At least he is trying to organize a bit now. He has some things heading to Good Will that he can't wear anymore. So good to get those out of the way. Jeepers, enjoy those moments with your grandson, you will treasure those times. My grandson is the youngest of 5 and will be 21 on the 15th. I still think about all those times with all my grandchildren when they were all young. Lots of fond memories. Then the weddings, and out on their own. Now they have all moved to other states but the youngest one that is living with me for now. But he plans on moving out by 1st of year. So, he will be on his own. Guess I will have to just wait for great grands to have that fun with the babies and toddlers that I had when grandkids were little. Youngest GS said he's never getting married and not having any kids. He's still young and just not ready yet. He will know one day when the right girl comes along and will then be the last wedding as then all G. children will have been married off. Church tomorrow and then home to work on chandelier again. Not sure what else I will do tomorrow afternoon. Might just relax and watch some TV. GS will be sleeping as he has to work tomorrow night.
  6. Annarchy, I forgot to mention those jars of pumpkin look great. I have never canned pumpkin, but this year I never bought any pumpkins this year.
  7. I like those little ice tray things. That's a great idea. Easy to stack that way. I need another freezer but this time an upright freezer so I can put those premade meals in there so I can find things. A chest freezer is nice and holds a lot but it's a lot of digging to find what you need no matter how organized you try to keep it. It's huge Kenmore freezer.
  8. Gotta watch that binge watching on TV. I do that and don't get anything done. So, try not to turn on TV during the day anymore GS's birthday is coming up, so I decided to get out of house and go shopping. Got birthday out of way, and then went to the new home goods store. It just opened not long ago. Nothing like the big one in Newport News. Mostly Christmas decorations. Maybe after the first of year it will start getting better. Started a little Christmas shopping but not a lot. Mostly just walked around the stores looking around at what they had and the prices. Lots of good sales though. I got me some much-needed PJs, and socks. I haven't bought PJs for me in years and mine look it to. Need to head to JoAnn fabric for some flannel. Still haven't gotten there yet. I wanted some blankets, but they didn't have anything that I wanted, so still looking. Made DH a flannel one as he wanted another one like the one that caved to the rag bag. Still have that one. So, might just make some more of those. But wanted some thicker ones for really cold weather. Got no housework done today. But then I really needed that break. Curtains will still be there tomorrow.
  9. Dee, that looks great. I don't have any room in my freezer to do the premade meals right now. But hoping to get back to canning from freezer after the holidays. I have about 10lbs of Italian sausage in freezer now. So, when I can get the canning out of way and make room. I am so stealing your idea.
  10. Been working on the Dining room today. Car is done. Taking a break now. Getting ready to clean dining room window and still have that chandelier looking at me. it's nasty. But will be the last thing I clean as I don't want dust getting back on it before I get the top of China closet cleaned down and the curtains down and in wash. The shears have turned a light grey and they are white. So, dust will be flying again. Was going through all the stuff that was piled up on dining room table from everywhere and found a $50 bill. Don't know where that came from but in my wallet now. Wonder if I will find any more money floating around? Would be nice if I did, but I am almost done with going through stuff now. So, I guess that was the only money floating around.
  11. I do have a huge binder that I keep all the canning recipes and also general recipes that I have printed out over time. All are in those sleeves. I had been working on that before DH got sick and need to get back to working on it again along with some other things. But getting the house back together is first priority. It's getting closer to being done everyday.
  12. Got all the canning jars that I could put into the pantry. BUT that was just over half of them, and I have no more room in pantry for them. So, I guess I will have to reorganize the ones still in the shed when I can get that cleaned out. But at least I have the bulk of them in house now and don't have to make trips out to shed to get what I need each time. A lot of these I had bought over time, but I also have a neighbor that every time she went to a yard sale, she would bring me box loads of canning jars to me. I have some antique ones from those. I don't use those. They are very old, and I would be afraid if I used them, they would break in the canner. Don't think I need any more canning jars of any size. Tomorrow I should be down to Harris Tire by 7am for the inspection, oil change and tire rotation. Hoping to be first in line. They open at 7:30. Might get there earlier depending on traffic at that time.
  13. Euphrasyne, that is also a good way to keep them all together. DH has a brown filing box that he kept all the garden stuff in. That stays on top of the toolbox and is still up there now. I need to go through it to see what all is in there. I know the furnace, air-conditioner. hot water tank and the lawnmowers, tiller and things are in there but don't know what else is in there. Something that can wait for a while though. I have enough I am going through right now. One thing at a time.
  14. Jeepers I like that idea, but the picture wouldn't come up for me. But I know what you are talking about. I think that is a great way to organize all the manuals and instructions for appliances, and yard items. Keeps them all together to find in a hurry when needed.
  15. Miki, praying that all will go well for your DH. I know it can be a struggle but just keep pushing for the care he needs. Had to take a break. Was going to take car in but can wait one more day. Started pulling all the canning jars, etc. from shed to store in the area I have set up in small bedroom. I have only put a dent in it. But I needed a break. Have jars sitting in garage now to bring in to take back to pantry. Got lots of walking in today going from shed to garage to pantry in back of house. I still have a lot of different size jars in shed. So don't even know if I can get them all in pantry. But working on a solution. I really want all of them out of the shed. They are in the way of a shelving unit that has things I need to go through for GS. Pots, pans, cookie sheets etc. that he will need come the first of the year. Want to get all that boxed up for when he is ready to move out. Need to get it done now before the weather turns really cold. Thinking of getting him out to the shed this Sat. to help go through things he will need. I even have a set of ball canning canisters he can have if he thinks he will need them. I know he will need at least one for sugar. Euphrasyne, if you ever decide you want to come by my house to see my madness, you would be shocked. It's overwhelming to say the least. But I am prepared for what's coming.
  16. Was able to get the long-term food out from under bed and into the small bedroom closet. Turning that bedroom into a pantry was the best idea I had. DH had started working on that idea before he got sick and SIL helped put up the first 2 shelving units to house the foods I had canned. Then GS and I put up the other 2 shelving units and the one unit in middle of room to house store bought foods and my canning supplies. So, all is working out and helping me to get house much better organized. I did not realize I had so many different spices. Though I do use them both in canning and when I am cooking. I think a lot of them I had bought cheap when Farm Fresh went out of business. Some of them I got for about $1.00 up to 5.00. I have used a lot of those up as they would be the oldest. But I have since bought more not knowing for sure what I really needed and what I had as I had them in a box all mixed up. But now I can see exactly what I have and don't think I will need any spices for a long while. I grow some things like rosemary, basil, and a few others and don't buy those. But a lot of everything else. Please keep me out of the grocery stores. Don't need anything else for a long while. Hoping tomorrow I can get down to get oil change, tire rotation and inspection done. Need to get there before they open so I can be first in line. I am sure I have some long-term meats somewhere in house but must be in another closet. Maybe in GS's bedroom closet. Will have to go check that out. Need to get my head wrapped around what I already have. Then I can move to all my canning supplies and get that all on the shelves, so I don't have to keep running outside to the shed to get things. Trying to make my life much easier is harder than I thought. But will be well worth it in the end.
  17. It has been many years since I have milled wheat berries. I have both the red and the white berries. A few years ago, I bought a hand crank mill from a baker as he couldn't keep up the demand for the bread and things he sold in his bakery. Said one of the grinders is well used but still works. I bought it and got a new part for it. I have not tried it yet but thinking about getting it out to try. I bought a small bag of wheat berries just for trying it out. It is stainless steel and hooks onto the counter. Very easy to clean. It doesn't have the big wheel that you talk about as I have seen those but does have a long handle and baker said it was easy to turn. I also have a grain meal with my kitchen aid blender as well but have not used that yet either. I have a kit for my kitchen aid that I can turn my mixer into a non-electric one. Only thing is that once you do that there is no turning it back into an electric mixer. But if things go south at least I can then change that over to a non-electric mixer.
  18. Jeepers the money was well spent, but the timing was wrong. But that was something that could not be done with DH still living. It would have set a really bad asthma attack going. And with his health issues at the time, we talked about it about 5 or 6 years ago, I held back because of his health. Been working all day on the small bedroom pantry. I am not even going there. That room is packed, and I ended up after pulling boxes that have been packed up in closets for a long time, I filled three 8 ft. shelves to the brim with spices of all sorts. Some I had forgotten about. I didn't get to go through them to check dates yet as it was just too many. But most are more organized now. Might just check dates as I need something for now. That job will have to happen after the rest of house is done. I knew the past 3 years for me has been a nightmare, but where did all this food come from. I am sure some of it was for the church food ministry before the churches closed down in 2020, because I had a boat load of cake mix. So, most all of that was in date and most of it is going to the church next Sunday. Will be some other things going to church as well. I don't think I will ever eat all this food now that it is just me. And GS is so picky he won't eat veggies, soup or canned meat. He really is going to learn the hard way. Ran up to Food Lion earlier today and you would have thought it was Christmas. No baskets and lines were all the way down the aisles. It was crazy. Only had to pick up a few frozen dinners that was on sale for GS for when he gets home in middle of night. Much easier for him since he is so beat when he gets home. And yes, I have had those gas pockets before but has been a long time ago. Better get some gas X for incase it happens again. I am sure I don't have that. Food Lion was almost wiped out of candy. I grabbed GS's favorite. At least they still had a few bags of snickers left. The candy isles were about wiped out. that was not the big bags of candy for Halloween. But the candy bars and things like that. Most was not on sale.
  19. Yesterday GS and I got the shelving unit up in pantry. Could only use one of them and was hoping to use two. But the other one will work great in my shed for other things. Went to Church this morning and then after church, we went to the COC building to bag candy for the kids for tomorrow night. Going to have a Trunk or Treat night. Hotdogs, drinks, of course candy and games. The event is getting bigger every year. Got home from Church and was just tired. So, laid down for a while. Didn't sleep but very tired. Don't know what is going on but this has been happening way too much. Maybe I am just overworked and too much on my mind with the economy and everything. Really starting to wish I saved that money I spent on the construction, but it was so needed. And down the line I would have either had a house fire from one of the 3 outlets that was cracked. or water damage from corroded pipes. So, I guess when I look at it like that it was a much-needed thing to have to get done. Still tired but at least I am up and did a few things this afternoon. Got bills paid and ready to mail tomorrow.
  20. I really do wish we had an Amish community that I could go to around here. But they are a lot of fun. I do remember my grandparents' farm. I used to spend summers there. though I barely remember a milking cow. I was very young when they had that. But do remember all the chickens. They had those up through my teen years. I think that is what got me started in wanting a homestead though it never happened. My heart is still in it.
  21. wleuphrasyne, my prayers are with you. You will get through this. Keeping busy does help. That marmalade looks good. And your DD is really doing great with the sewing and such. She's going to be a great help down the road when things start really getting tough. She can help make clothes for the baby at that rate. Watched U tube for a bit this morning while GS was sleeping. Cooked a small turkey breast for sandwiches. Cheaper than lunch meat for the time that I bought it. But now can't find a turkey. Food Lion is out of them, and I haven't checked other stores yet. I don't need one, but our church is hoping to get them for the food ministry. Went through a couple more boxes and then GS was up and helped me get one of the shelving units up in pantry. Couldn't use both of them. So, one will have to do the job. Now I can get that pantry finished all the way and get started on another project. Need to go through all my OTC meds and get them set up to see what I have and what I need. They will be moved out of the boxes onto the hall closet that used to be a small pantry. That closet is long, so will be great for first aid and OTC meds. I can set them up so I can find what I need right then. Now I just need to think back to the days I worked in a Pharmacy as to how they set things up in the pharmacy section. want to try to set up similar to that. Very easy to spot what you want that way. Wow telling on myself the pharmacy days goes back well over 45 plus years ago.
  22. Love the Duck tails. Seems I had seen something about either Jeeps or Truckers and the ducks a long time ago. but can't remember if it was for the same reason or not. That was years ago.
  23. Dee, Always love your stories. I love hearing how you are doing on your homestead and the things you are doing.
  24. My daughter would love that. She just released 10 squirrels' last weekend. She's a wildlife rehabber. She has one squirrel that she cannot ever release due to brain injury. He can't grasp nuts, nor can he climb. I will have to send that one to her. She would get a kick out of it.
