  1. Several years ago I purchased a huge amount of mylar bags...some that were the quart size with zip lock tops. I make my own "traveling" meals...I put an oxygen absorber in them and press out as much air as I can before I seal them. Have used them in our travel trailer as "emergency" food. You can also vacuum seal "meals in jar". We were gifted with some MRE's but haven't touched them. They're our "last ditch meal"! LOL
  2. Just my opinion but in half pint jars I probably would do chicken strips to avoid density issues.
  3. Spent Monday vacuum sealing Granola and Raisins in half gallon jars. Down to my last 2 cases of half gallon jars so I'll be vacuum sealing my coffee beans in quarts...have plenty of them. We went shopping Tuesday...I called it my "winter garden haul"! LOL WM had green beans, corn, mixed veggies etc., for 50 cents a can so bought a case of each. Picked up two cases of Parent's Choice baby wipes, a bag of Vista paper towels (I love them for making personal wipes in an emergency) and a case of heavy duty tp. I pay the extra because it takes less...so it's actually cheaper in my opinion. Also a couple cases of Diet Dr. Thunder. Today was "misty" hubby couldn't cut plywood for the sub-flooring (no room in the garage yet) so while I cut back my Thyme, Garlic Chives and some of the mint in the half rounds, hubby dug out nearly all of the overgrown Lambs Quarter. I didn't get to use as much of it as usual this year, and didn't pressure can any of it either. Put a load of clothes in the dryer at the homestead while we were working outside...nice and cool...and the tiny mist didn't bother us a bit. Abby-girl had a ball running around in the garden area and around the half rounds and the containers! Then laid down and watched us work! LOL Tomorrow we'll probably load the trailer with as much of the brush etc., as we can and take it to our city recyclers. Hubby's got a knot just below his right knee so it's probably bursitis (?) so he didn't need to be on his knees laying sub flooring anyway. Gave him some Arnica gel to rub onto his knee area and then a cold pack with his leg elevated for awhile before we went to the homestead. He wore his heavy duty knee brace when we went to work in the garden area. Supper was a "get rid of the stuff you bought that you don't like"...ugh! But...it's gone and we won't buy it again...candied carrots, instant potatoes with cauliflower and broccoli and cheese....yuck! Glad we only bought a couple!
  4. Will be sanding down the fireplace bricks so the paint will adhere, and will be painting that the same color as well as the inside of the front entry doors (we have a door that opens into the living room and another that opens into the dining room (there's a covered wrap around porch). "When we're moved and have settled in a bit, I'll paint the kitchen the same color...and the cabinetry's will all be white like in the bathroom. My living room leather loveseat is beige and our leather recliners are black. We'll replace the recliners later in beige. Leather is expensive so that will have to wait! LOL
  5. Hubby's Kindle's battery went toes up so he went to $Tree and bought a 6' usb type cord and uses that for his Kindle. Mine still holds a charge and we bought them at the same time.
  6. Held it down until the system came on...maybe it will work for you?
  7. For me...using a laptop ...and wanting the default (blue) really is mostly white with some blue. Guess I'll have to live with it...and wear my readers for sure..,.
  8. Yesterday we went Mennonite shopping to re-stock the extended pantry. Today we went to another one and picked up two more 25# bags of pinto beans, a bag of long grain white rice and 4 more cases of pint jars and he was selling lids...but only 5 dozen to a customer...even though we've shopped (and spent a lot of money!) and told us that the Mennonites always use their lids 4 or 5 times. I've always saved my lids to use for dehydrating etc, so I have lots. When we asked about how he got his lids finally, he told us (we don't think he'd tell a fib) that Ball and Kerr etc., are all one company and they're made in...you got it...China! Said that's why it's been almost impossible to get in more. My Tattler's are becoming more an more valuable to me. Harvest Guard is basically the same thing, but perhaps cheaper? Need to check them out when (and if) I decide to buy some in bulk. Stopped by another "sort of" dutch store that's going out of business and was able to pick up 4 large canning funnels for 10 cents each and a dozen one gallon square buckets with gasket seal lids for 50 cents each. They'll be wonderful to put beans and rice (??) and put in my kitchen pantry with a scoop inside so when I want beans or rice I'll just pop the lids, help myself and put the lid back on. A few springs of sage in the bottom of each should work well too. Got home to a wet kitchen floor this afternoon! I ran a sink full of hot soapy water and put our breakfast dishes in it. Seems the basket decided to leak! Sure was happy that all my supplies that are under the sink are in small totes, so it mostly only filled one and then over-flowed. Also VERY glad that hubby put tiles and caulked under the sink so it was a pretty EZ clean up. Dried things up then went to Menards and picked out the paint and flooring for the homestead's bathroom. When the salesman pulled out what we needed, there was a 2x12 piece left. He said "If you'll buy this extra I'll give you a big discount. All the paperwork it takes to inventory a small piece and then try to sell it is impossible." So we said yes. Then when it got rolled out, there was a bit of damage to one end about 4 foot long...so he didn't charge us at all for that extra 2x12! The paint is a very light gray with a slight blue tint, and the vinyl has the same colors plus some extra's in small tile square patterns. Gonna look spiffy with the white shower, sink and toilet. Told hubby I really felt the Lord nudging me with "get your flooring". Glad we did, because we obviously bought the last of that role. There were lots of empty rolls and very little samples, so they're probably having trouble getting stock back in. It might be awhile before our world comes back to some semblance of order. If there ever was a TEOTWAWKI this looks a lot like it...just saying. Stopped yesterday at an open air flea market and picked up several nice Anchor Hocking jars with designer lids..pint an a half size...and regular canning lids and rings will fit. I won't can in them but they'll make beautiful storage jars. Each one has different designs and shapes, and the lids are red and orange with little handles on the top. Love 'em! Tomorrow I'll be busy cleaning up my kitchen and a lot of vacuum sealing, dehydrating and pressure canning will be in my future the next couple of weeks!
  9. The first time one of ours did that we took it to Staples. The tech opened it up, pressed the "on" button and held it for quite some time...and it re-set itself. Might work for yours?
  10. Housework day...couldn't hang laundry with the rain etc., so got a couple loads washed and hung out today. Then "the other stuff". Hubby is my champion! He got the homestead's bathroom textured today so now comes the primer paint and then the satin coat! Woohoo!
  11. Yesterday we sorted all the OTC's that were in storage totes and hubby carried them upstairs to a little "pantry" area. Great place for them. That made room in the main pantry (at the homestead) for us to put the tp and pt up on a top of the shelf that held the OTC's. That cleared out the space on top of 2 other shelving units and we'll be putting the new jarred up green beans etc., up there. Today went for dental checkup (x-rays etc., ) and cleaning. Everything okay with next appt. for cleaning in spring. Said teeth were in good shape. Hubby is next for his x-rays and cleaning. Me and Abby have our good reports, now it's his turn! LOL
  12. We've just been plain busy! Got the truck home and it sure feels good to have two sets of transportation! Our farmer friends called and said "Come pick"...he's gone fishing and she is pretty much finished with what she wants. We picked (and I jarred up) 24 pints of green beans and 7 pints of Okra. Also got 7 more quarts of Elderberry juice. Nice additions to our pantry for the winter. We're so very proud of hubby! He's lost enough weight now (voluntarily) that he's wearing the size jeans he wore when we got married! I told him I'd have to be swatting off the trolls if he gets any better looking! LOL Son called a couple of days ago and gave me a lovely guitar. I haven't played for years so no callouses. But it is a beautiful and thoughtful gift. He's learning to play using a "Chord Buddy" and said I could pick one up at WM. Might do that. May have mentioned it before, but just in case...my brother passed very quietly at home in their travel trailer at their lake property. Hospice did a wonderful job in making him comfortable and being there for her. Such a sad ending at such a young age...but party animals sometimes pay a big price in their health. Got rain today so we hung around the house most of the day. Did make a run to $Tree to pick up some things to put back in the truck. A box of tissues, a package of baby wipes, a couple of packages of masks, a basket to put our drinks etc. in...the console only has 2 places to hold drinks. Hubby will need to put Abby's "floor" back in so she'll be able to have a place to ride comfortably again, although she's doing fine just sitting on her "bed" that we put in the back floor. Tomorrow we'll have to load all the goodies up and take them to the homestead's pantry etc. Hubby will be getting back to work on our bathroom there. He's ready to texture the walls and then paint, then the flooring, then the vanity and stool. Seems like a lifetime since we started that project. Later...
  13. Picked Elderberries from our friends farm yesterday afternoon. I have 7 trays on my dehydrator. I just use a hair pick to comb them off into my very fine mesh strainer, give them a short rinse and onto the leathers they went. Still have about a half of another 13 gallon trash bag. I'll do them tomorrow...even though they've already begun to "seep". That's okay...I'll give the bag a good shake and let what falls off fall off, then comb the rest. I'll get them on the dehydrator tomorrow.
  14. Years and years ago I had sinus problems. The DO took Betadine swabs and stuck them up into my sinus cavities and that did the trick. We keep Betadine set back.
  15. We have started stocking Tonic Water for our little steam inhaler machine. If you read the ingredients in Tonic Water...Quinine. Who woulda think it! We watched a homesteader that uses it for him and his family.
  16. We keep one in the "cubby hole" of Miss B. The cubby was once a place for a small tv, but the previous owner didn't have one so we've just used it for the portable dvd player as well as a small fan and a small heater that run off the house battery.
  17. Got most of the homestead's yard mowed. I did most of the garden area and hubby finished it. He did Abby's yard, the easement area and the area around the east side of the house and in front of one bay of the garage. The other two lots on the far east were mowed last week, so they'll be okay for a bit. Still need to get the Roost mowed but that's a very small front and side yard and the back barely grows grass because it's so shaded. He mowed here last night. Pulled all the plants from the tubs. We'll turn the growing medium into the raised beds that held the potatoes. We'll build raised beds later this year. The tubs worked really nice for small amounts of food, but we have a feeling we'll be needing to grow more specific foods and more of it. My brother is now on hospice and probably will go home to the Lord before too much longer. SIL says he's fading fast, but not in any pain. Hate to say it but it's just too many years of smoking, chewing, drinking and other "candies". Hopefully she won't go back to that life style after this, but so far the only thing she's quit is smoking. Loves her "stuff". Tomorrow afternoon we're going to friend's farm to pick Elderberries again this year. I may hang a bunch of them in pierced sandwich sacks and hang them somewhere to dry and then vacuum seal them in jars. I've got several quart jars of the juice that I can turn into syrup, jelly or just pour over some ice with some Stevia as a morning drink.
  18. We were at Dollar General today to pick up some things...and it's a good thing we were in Miss B! Some older gentleman was trying to avoid another older lady in her car (she was backing out with a mask on) and was headed for his passenger side door...so he rammed it in gear and back solidly into Miss B's rear bumper! Made a mess of the back of his passenger side bumper etc., pushed it in really bad. Only left a smudge of his white paint on Miss B's big metal back bumper. The only thing we were concerned about was the jar it made to the newly re-built transmission! Didn't notice anything while we were driving around town etc., today. So much for trying to wear a mask while you're driving!
  19. Jarred up 24 pints of green beans yesterday, so washed and labeled them this morning for the winter pantry. Then did and sweeping and vacuuming. Fixing three meals a day keeps the dishwasher (me) pretty busy! Had some thunder going on a bit ago, so our girl has found another hidy hole besides "pappa's" side of the bed...the bathroom floor! LOL I guess she can't hear it quite as much there? Glad it's over with. Will try to do some laundry in the morning so I can get it hung on the lines early enough to dry. The garden tubs are toast except the canteloupe's and tomatoes. May go ahead and pull the green 'maters and just make a quick salsa out of them with the red ones I've got in the frig. Hubby said mechanic thought he might get the old engine pulled from the truck today...then...in goes the replacement. He told hubby he thought that there were still a lot of very useable parts on the old engine so that will save us a lot of dollars! Also didn't find any other repairs he thought were needed. Once the transplant is in, hubby will ask him about working on the gas tank/fuel gauge. It's sporadic and you can't always tell how much gas you've got...but didn't want to send mechanic on over-load or cause him to try and hurry.
  20. Wouldn't doubt it a bit! Unfortunately, this health nurse has got not only health board buffalo'd but every business in town scared of their shadow now! Several business signed a petition stating they were against the "rule"...but said lots wouldn't sign for fear of retribution by the health department. After the "meeting" (really only an announcement) several in the crowed began to chant "we will not comply". I see a class action suite coming for our city and county officials. Our state constitution specifically outlaws this health nurse's behavior and the board she over sees.
  21. The truck got towed to the mechanics garage today (after vet appt) so things are on a roll! Our city just passed a "mask rule" and reads just stupid! Can't go outside anywhere unless you can stay 6 ft. away from others. Wonder who's going to enforce it? Wonder who will be the first to challenge it? Guess we'll take our shopping and recreation to other cities! We usually do any way!
  22. Took Abby-girl to the vet for her annuals. They wanted to put her in a large crate outside their door, with a tarp covering everything but the door. I said...Nope! I'll mask up and hand her leash off to you...she has on a Holt collar. Otherwise...cancel our appointment. They said "Oh, ok...we'll come out and put "our" slip leash on her". THAT'S the way the ball bounces around our place! My girl absolutely would not understand us (me..mommabear) pushing her into a crate that was really too small for her, with a collar she hates, and then walking away and leaving her until strangers came out and took her inside. Nope...no way! When they brought her out she looked totally bewildered, looking around for HER humans. When I opened my door and said "There's my dog!" She was glad to let her human pappa change leash's and bring her to me!
