  1. I don’t know how much more of George W. Bush’s great economy I can stand. Consider some of the price increases since he took office: Razor blades: $2.78 for 10 to $3.84 for 10 at Wal-Mart. Bleach: $0.99 to $1.30 per gallon. Sandwich cookies: $1.50 to $2.00 for 2 pounds. Witch hazel: $0.88 to $1.28 per pint. Sardines (used as cat treats): <$0.50 to $0.65. Potatoes: <$1.50 to $2.00+ per 5 pounds. Cat food: $0.25 per can to $0.30 per can. Printer paper: $1.00 to $2.50 per 500 sheets. Sugar: <$1.50 to $2.00 per 5 pounds.
  2. What is the purpose of buying sugar in 5lb amounts in some weeks, but buying it in 25lb amounts in others? Here in north Florida you seldom get a break in price by buying in larger quantities. Am I right in thinking that most of the preparedness books I have read were written by and for people who live in rural or semi-rural settings? I doubt seriously that most Americans could really store 25lbs of sugar- living in the city you simply don't have that much space. Someone needs to produce a preparedness guide for city-dwellers.
  3. The human body produces a hormone called melanin. This hormone determines the body’s level of alertness. When the body is in a darkened environment, it produces melanin which makes a person feel sleepy. When the body is in a light-filled environment, melanin production stops and the body wakes up. Due to the shortened amount of daylight that comes in the winter some people suffer from Seasonal Affected Depression Disorder that is essentially triggered by too much melanin production. During the winter months we often have to be out and about by 8:00 am, when it is just barely daylight for many
  4. Hello! I just found this site (via Survivalism_2004) and have been a-wasting my morning gleaning the wisdom of this site! Thanks so much. The affection and generosity among you is heartening! I hail from SW Washington, and am a wanna-be homesteader on 3 acres. You may be VERY sure I'll be back. Quick question: when is the best time to find most of you guys in the chat room? God bless!

  8. Hello, I wonder if anyone out there can share their wisdom with this greenhorn? We are going to be getting our chickens next spring. I want them for meat AND eggs, and I want ones that will be broody.... in other words, I don't want to have to keep buying chickens from now on. 8) What breed of chickens am I looking for? I am getting so much conflicting information that my head is swimming! Thanks!
