  1. About 3 weeks ago I heard of a house to rent, it is bigger than where we are and will be $5 a week cheaper. Some of the extra room we will have - a large rumpus room, 3 car garage, a study, a large sun room and a squash court! what will be very hard to take are the sea views - about 10 km of sea-views to the north and about the same to the south - oh and it is whale watching season as they migrate north. so now we are packing. Even though this weekend is a long weekend, I will drive north tomorrow to pick up my Mum from the airport, she has had 3 months in New Zealand. We will drive home on Monday. We get the keys on the 22nd June, so lots of work before then!
  2. This has not been for nothing. If you make that decision, at least you will know you gave it your best shot. You will know that you did everything you could to help them get back on their feet. You will also know exactly what the guardian is dealing with, so you will not be tempted to pick it back up or attempt to. this last month has shown you how difficult it will be, and if we face facts this is only the beginning. Do you really need this stress every time they want to spend more than they have? the pattern of over spending is a life long habit. They will see no reason why they cant continue doing it. Yes it sad that it is happening, it is sad that you are caught in the middle, but if you continue as guardian, then more and more of YOUR money will be spent on the little things they cant afford. You cant do that. They are adults and now must live with their decisions. It might have been Dad that has been the worst offender, but remember that if it is your mother ringing now, then much of it was done with her knowledge and agreement. I think you will need to step back, and it will be hard, but an independent guardian will make sure they have somewhere to live and food to eat. there probably wont be any extras, but they have had their entire life time of extras all ready. If you do step back, then you also need to put in place a system of accountabilty with your husband, so when they ask you if you could just get them this, that or something else, you can honestly say 'sorry but hubby wont let me' this will deflect their anger from you to him, but if he is strong enough to do it, it will ease your vulnerability to harassment from them. it is hard to teach our teenagers these lessons, knowing that they will leave home and need to face financial facts of life, but to face it with adult parents, who will never take the burden on their own shoulders, I do not know how you have done it to this point. Take heart, you have been the most kind hearted daughter, many would not have done what you have. I applaud you.
  3. the block is a term used to indicate the land area. so a unit has no block of land with it. a block can indicate vacant land or house and land. people will refer to having a block in the bush - means some land. sometimes that means with a dwelling but not always. is that as clear as mud? basically the land area to maintain at the new house is bigger than where we are now. Here I could almost shake hands with the neighbours through the window - there is only about 3 feet between their building and ours. the new place is just so spacious and has plenty of space between the houses.
  4. shhh... since we have moved around the last 4 years we have been in such small places that there is no storage, as in under the beds etc are storing the stuff we dont use often but is not getting thrown away, like material and sewing supplies. my pantry is woeful, it is so small we have a bookcase in the kitchen just to separate the gluten and gluten-free foods, I am quietly hoping to start again when we get to the new place. when DH asked what I thought I said great room to unpack the sewing room, and in my mind I thought and slowly get ahead on food storage
  5. the house is huge! kitchen is early 70's but pretty good condition, rumpus room is maybe 12 ft square, dinette off the kitchen, formal dining room, sun-room was massive, maybe 20ft by 15ft, views to the south of town and sea, sea views to the north, large lounge, 3 bedrooms, all with built-ins, lots of storage in the passageway, oh - a study with storage, 3 car garage with storage. There are regularly deer and kangaroos at the back fence. can you guess by now we are applying to rent it? there is also a squash court downstairs, but access is through the granny flat, so we will see whether or not it is practical to use. the idea of packing is scary, but the extra rooms will make it so worth while!
  6. Last night I heard of a rental house coming available early June. We weren't actually looking for a different house than the one we rent now, but although we fit here, we don't really, everything is crammed into rooms and the car is in a carport as the garage is full of storage. so - this house is on a hill above the main state highway, so maybe a bit of noise. it is large and roomy and the living areas include a roomy lounge, large rumpus, sun-room, study and a squash court. the block is large, which could be a bonus or a drawback. currently we have a small block that David manages quite well. I would be able to finish unpacking (actually unpack?) my craft and sewing things the views will be spectacular, looking north and south along the ocean beaches, and it is only about 1 kilometre from the beach. there is a possibility that the owner could try and sell in a year or so. but where we are now there is a possibility that the owner could want to move back to this area, so although a concern, at the end of the day that is a hazard with rentals. the rent will be $5 a week less than where we are, but the cost of moving and the extra power for a large house will negate the savings. location is about 4 mins? from work, but need to cross the state highway and there are no traffic lights, so could be a busy road to access. where we are now it is 2 mins from work, no busy roads and roundabouts on any busy intersections. I am trying to keep it in perspective, and would value prayers that we would make the right decision for our needs and not get sidetracked by the views and size of the property. - for perspective, it is considered to be the dress circle street for the area, and was on the market a couple of years ago for VERY big $ (you could buy the house we live in now 3 times for the same $) We hope to go and see it Monday night - the current tenants are away for the weekend. The reason it is has come available is because the current tenants have built there own home and also there is also a granny flat under the house. A lovely lady from church sublets the flat. the current tenants are hoping to find someone to take it on that will continue to sublet the flat. if they let the lease go and it is rented through an agency the flat would be part of the new lease. the lady is lovely and we would find it very nice to have her as a close neighbour. so please pray that we will make the right decision. having to pack and move, well lets say for us it is a mammoth job!
  7. I have the same pin holder that I have had for years. When I run out of needles, I pull it apart get the needles out and reglue it - usually with a new fabric around the top. It is a top from a spray can (when the top was whole and came off before you use the can) I filled a circle of material with wadding and stuffed it in the top of the lid with some glue, a little lace round the sides and it looks beautiful.
  8. we have a kerbside rubbish collection every 6 months. often it is just rubbish that is left out. This week though we scored! 2 wire frames that will be good to grow peas over 1 moon chair - needs new cushion 1 dresser - mirror missing - will paint up very nice 1 mirror - will go on dresser 1 x 2 seater lounge - in perfect condition. ok walking up the street with a lounge on the wheel barrow was a little embarrassing, so we waited till it was dark
  9. Back atcha - you have been missed, you are allowed to jump in more often you know and we wont mob you (or maybe we will)
  10. I use old towels that are no longer absorbent enough to be in the bathroom. I cut them in half to be a better size. They get washed regularly, and if too soiled to clean up they go to the garden / garage rag pile, and still get used and washed, but for different uses.
  11. Sometimes it is hard to know how to pray, and I think this is one of those times... Father God, I thank you that in the midst of our sorrow, You are there in control. I ask for peace in the hearts of Annarchy, her sister and the whole family, and for the oil of joy instead of sadness. Father God, I thank You that you can wrap this whole family in a blanket of your love, You can support them when we are so far away, and you are always there when they need support. Just love them the way You do best, in Jesus name Amen
  12. praying here too I know that God works miracles - DH had a bad diagnosis with cancer last year, and he is a walking miracle today. Prayer changes the medical diagnoses!
  13. I dont have the room to shop a month at a time anymore - so even prepping is a challenge. But for many years I shopped once a month. My biggest issues were perishables. I made sure that I got the containers from Tupperware that keeps veges better. I made a point of paying a little more for better quality perishables. But it is not that hard to change your shopping habits. For a few weeks I bought extras. So that my pantry now had a months supply. I kept lists, and saw what I used in a month, from that I could fine tune my regular shop. If I ran out then I changed my meals to suit. The key was not to go looking for one more ingredient at the local shop. You cannot buy one thing! It simply doesn't work. If you know what ingredients you normally use, then your pantry can be useful. It is the beginning of successful prepping, knowing what you use and how often. If you have a one month supply, it doesn't take much to extend the non perishables to 2 months, then 3 months. If you combine those principles with the other suggestions that have been made, you will simplify meal times. The hard work is setting it up, once that happens, it will be easier.
  14. Another great read ... I am really enjoying this book!
  15. I was fascinated again - you are doing a wonderful job. I read alot, well normally a lot. And you have been able to keep my initerest, the flow of the story is excellent. And I am looking forward to the each installment Keep up the good work!
  16. but think of time and energy expended, one big batch this month - next month a big batch of something else, soon wou will have lots of variety ...
  17. But Adam, if you make a big batch and can it, then it will last longer! Just think one days work for 10 pints, that really isnt that much. But it is more instant meals sitting on the shelf for those days when you get home late and feel like cooking properly.
  18. I have been looking for a jar lifter for months - and finally found one today in the op shop (thrift shop for you lot!) for 20c. Yea! So don't give up - those tools of the trade are out there!
  19. Quite right too! Maddy you have to keep giving her lots of hugs from all of us because we all think she is one in a million!
  20. One of the best Aussie brands is "Thursday Plantation" - their range of tea tree oil products is excellent.

    DID YOU KNOW

We have a few suction cup hooks. In the kitchen the hook is above the sink and holds the dishbrush, so I can always find it, its not underneath all the dirty dishes. In the bathroom, there are a few (I do have 4 girls) and they hold the nylon scrubby ball things, nail brush, pumice stone (it is on a string). These are a great idea in a rental house where you cant drill a hole and put something permanent in the wall.
  22. Snowmom I am sorry I cant remember, it has been a while since I used it too. But that sounds about right, just experiment with how much you can get away with before people notice!. The problem occurs in that it sticks to the bottom because it is a starch, and you need to add some water as a starch will thicken. Probably better in a crockpot than the frying pan
  23. When cooking with mince -(hamburger?) you can extend the meat with rolled oats. doesn't change the flavour, but be careful because it can stick to the bottom of the pan.
  24. I was being kind and not mentioning ducks Sue
