  1. Ohhhhhh...Mt_Rider...Harvey was a doozy on our peninsula. No power for 21 days, sleeping in hammocks, cooking outside, and grateful for every bit of stored food and water! Our whole house had to be gutted. Wearing my firearm 24/7...all the expected issues. We learned a ton, overall lost little and were safe during evacuation with the pups. Our preps were spot on for the situation and we had friends and Cajun Navy to help remove trees, etc. We inherited an extended family and became great friends with some of those people from St. Tammany Parish. The main takeaway is that during an emergency it's PEOPLE and LABOR that seems to be needed in natural disasters. We had so many friends trying to start a go fund me or try to send $$$, but we declined every time. We had everything we needed except for a large pool of people with strong backs and chainsaws. We stared at a massive pile of debris in front of every home for months. It was quite depressing to live that way for months... And it's taken years to become beautiful here again. There are still signs of loss, but the natural beauty came back. As far as my BOB...it's evolved some! I have been converting a 2014 Ram Promaster to my BOV, so my BOB and EDC go everywhere with me, plus some. I have MUCH to share about that super fun project in the future!
  2. Hi, everyone! I've been out for a while. It's so great to see everyone continuing to Prep so hard. I'm excited to catch up on Mrs Survival! I'm on my way to work, but I will check in later. Jeanette
  3. We avoided ALL shopping this weekend, except for my Melaleuca order which is an automatic order each month online. That is the thing about being prepared...we never "need" anything, and Christmas presents will most likely be prep items for the family! LOL!!!

  5. Thanksgiving meal was Blackened Redfish, Fried Oysters, Fried Shrimp, and Cilantro Slaw. We still has pumpkin pie, of course! https://www.dropbox.com/s/eoldat52aail8zm/20151126_160907.jpg?dl=0
  6. Thanks, you guys!!! I "insisted" that DH not spend any cash on me this year because our preps are always a priority. However, I received a beautiful Blackthorne Staff from Ireland and some Python Straps for my DD Jungle Hammock. The staff is a perfect height for me to hold like a wizard and has a hook at the top to reach for stubborn persimmon high in a tree! It also shoots fire and lightening depending on my mood, so definitely a prep item!
  7. I have Thrive Honey Crystals from Shelf Reliance and the first ingredient is Refinery Sugar (Refined cane sugar) and the 2nd and last ingredient is Honey. Essentially that reconstitutes into "honey sauce" and if I had paid attention to that ingredient list I probably would not have bought them. What can I say? I was caught up in the moment at a Saxet Gun Show!!! That said, it does have at least 25 year shelf life and less weight and easy pour/use. Here is my thought process these days...Why would I take beautiful local honey with an unlimited shelf life and medicinal properties and turn it into crystal sweetener? I can just use Raw Cane Sugar at that point. The "dead" honey won't reconstitute into a natural antimicrobial burn treatment or sore throat remedy. What are your plans for crystal honey, Jeepers? I can see it being handy for pre-made meals in a jar.
  8. I did post a BOB video and some pics a while back. I haven't been able to search any of my old entries, however. Hopefully just a glitch. I have tweaked my BOB several times since then. I need to make a new video at some point.
  9. Thanks to all of you for the warm welcome back. We have still been prepping HARD around here. Lots of changes too. My dad was REALLY sick, and DH and I decided it was time to take the parents in and care for them as they age. I may write more on that in a private forum. DH and I also opened a new business and I am still working as an RN. I recently took a Bowfishing seminar, and self-defense class, and some more basic classes like Knot tying and Tying Flys. Right now #1 obsession is with 100% shelf stable meals. The pantry is looking great and we have really tweaked our purchases to make sense for our exotic/spicy palates. My #2 obsession is changing the wardrobe slowly from cute to highly functional and durable for whatever comes my way. I have lots to share on this, but will post in the appropriate forums. Hugs and strong coffee for all of you!!! Jeanette
  10. Hi, everyone! It's been a while since I came by for a visit. It's great to see some old faces on here!
  11. We miss Dr. Who too! I cry so hard every time we lose a doctor... Most of the time, my husband and I work together on a bigger project...as in, one will prep the fruit and one will can the fruit. Most of the time we listen to an audiobook so that we are not looking up from the project the whole time. Either way, it's time consuming! At this point, most items get dehydrated, which is lighter, simpler, and uses less jars. Our greenbeans, pickling cucumbers are all being fermented and we are making mega batches of kimchee. It's a very simple preserving method, and sure beats heating up the kitchen with a canner!!!
  12. "When a little cayenne is combined with plantain (leaves) and applied as a poultice, it has remarkable powers to draw out any foreign object embedded in the flesh." - Michael Tierra, OMD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantago_major http://essmextension.tamu.edu/plants/plant/plantain/#images Plantain grows everywhere around here!
  13. I'm still waiting for my textbooks to arrive....{{{sigh}}} However, I decided to attend an advanced chat over Materia Medica a couple of days ago. What did I learn? On the most superficial level, I learned that Astragalus, Dragon Bone (fossilized animal bone), and Carapace (dorsal freshwater Turtle exoskeleton) can be made into a decoction for ingesting or topical poultice for non-healing bed sores. The WHY/HOW is what eludes me at this moment... Intrigued to say the least!
  14. Hello all! Right now I am over the moon! Last Friday I enrolled in formal herbal education with East West School of Planetary Herbology to study under Dr. Michael Tierra, OMD. The program is set up to be Distance Learning with actual Class/Chat time 3 times per week and scheduled trips to the Redwoods in California for week long Seminars with the renown staff. The program should take 2-3 years, and is self-paced. After that, there are 400 hours of Clinical work with a mentor. I am anxiously awaiting my textbooks, and in the meantime have been pouring over the Student Website/Platform which is incredibly rich and filled with knowledge and enthusiastic dialogue. Since I'm already a Registered Nurse, I won't be required to take Anatomy, Physiology, and Pathophysiology. As herbalists know, it's a lifetime of learning. I just knew I had to go back to my roots...especially as a prepper!
  15. {{{Goatherder}}} I am sorry about your mom. Welcome home!
  16. This has been a long, hard winter for so many. Just a few more days of hot chocolate, candles, and board games. I know I'm far south from you...but we had our first Bluebonnet and I have seen 3 gorgeous Purple thistles! SPRING WILL COME!!! Stay safe and warm!
  17. That is one of the nicest introductions I have ever read on any forum. Sounds like you have your hands full. These ladies are quite inspirational and soon you will have an entire room dedicated to your Canning and food processing...LOL! Welcome! P.S. All the best gear comes from Australia! DH and I are always drooling over the awesome off-road RV options y'all have.
  18. Yep! Nothing but the best for my boys...

  20. I love these! I have 8 quart sized that I have bought 2 at a time over the last year. Now I would like to get my hands on some pint sized Jar Totes. If only they would make 1/2 Gallon Ball Jar sized too! I do alot of dry canning in those. Yes, they are pricey...but my jars are VERY secure and that feels great! All my 8 oz jelly jars are jealous. LOL!
