quiltys41
I think my house is too cold. We keep it about 65 in here and my starter isn't doing a thing...maybe I should throw this one out and try it again? Q Link to comment
ArmyOfFive4God
Do you guys think I could keep this on an open-top dehydrator to make it G-R-O-W? Link to comment
BiscuitMaker
The warmest place in my house is on top of the dryer and I am always drying clothes. Link to comment
Grubby
Our house is on the chilly side too. I've been keeping our next to the kitchen stove. Also, I've been using the crock pot a lot!! I keep it there too! If you have something warm on, sit it next to it. It doesn't need much. Link to comment
Cat
If you have a gas stove with a pilot light (NOT the electric-start kind)... You can set your sourdough in the oven, probably leaving the door slightly ajar (stick a towel in the opening! ). OR you can set your sourdough over the area on the top burner grates where the pilot light is. Both will keep your starter snuggly-warm in a chilly house. Some people use an electric heating pad... MUST have a plastic cover!! And once it's going well, the chilly house won't really hurt it. Some people can't stand the idea of it out all the time and keep it in the fridge. And keep a cloth over it, tied or rubber-banded on. (See my link I posted above) Link to comment

ArmyOfFive4God
Are you thinking what I'm thinking, Pinky? I don't have the dryer going all the time, and we don't have a pilot light (I kept it going last time like that), BUT...... You gave me an idea. I DO have a lightbulb in the oven & I've read you can use that to set bread to rise, so maybe I'll go with that & see. One of the recipes I use regularly you keep it in the fridge, then let it sit room temp for 24 hours before messing with it. Off to mix up some flour & water & suck. BRB, LOL Link to comment
BiscuitMaker
I have another idea how about a ice chest but warm it up and keep it there if your house is really cold. I use a ice chest for making yogurt I just fill it with warm water and set the yogurt jars in there. Just a idea----- Link to comment
ArmyOfFive4God
I thoght about that biscuit. I was going to heat up our rice pack. But I've got it made & it's sitting on the back of the stove right now, with the pressure canner going. It's already bubbling & growing!!! Link to comment
ArmyOfFive4God
OK, I have a starter that keeps growing to 3X it's orig. size atop my stove. YAY!! I have to stir it every so often for 2 days, so I'm off to a GREAT start(-er, LOL)!!! Link to comment
dogmom4
I just started some from Skagitgal's recipe. We'll see how it does. The temps are really dropping down around here at night so hopefully it won't get too cold. Right now it's sitting right next to a warm oven. Stacy Link to comment

ArmyOfFive4God
My dough has been rising on my dryer today. I'll make loaves tonight and let them rise overnight. Tomorrow I bake. Cross your fingers! Link to comment
quiltys41
Got the fingers crossed! Let us know how it went. I decided I WILL learn how to make bread if it kills me. Had to pay almost 2.00 for one loaf today at the store. Ugh! Q Link to comment
Cat
Note to new sourdough makers... It WILL smell bad... that's what it *IS*. Don't be afraid of it. It's supposed to be that way. Now if it turns dark, then ask us before using it. Link to comment
ArmyOfFive4God
Yup, Cat's right. Mine didn't smell sour enough to me the day I was supposed to make the dough, so I let it sit an extra day (actually 2, but the next was me falling asleep, LOL). It will smell like beer or wine, something, but it's a fermentation process! Link to comment

I've been making wheat sourdough starter and mine got a really dark hooch and started getting funny stuff floating on top, mold maybe and didn't smell quite right. I know it's bad but this was terrible! I tossed it. I just didn't want to take a chance. It's only flour and water! I made more. This time I made a white flour starter. I think this is fun!
