Apples & Potatoes

Recommended Posts

I just found out the hard way that if you store potatoes next to apples, the potatoes will sprout and the apples will taste moldy!

FYI,

Cheryl

We used to store apples as follows:

First make sure the apples are perfect and dry.

Wrap them in Newspaper, and place in a draw, or a ventilated box.

We store potatoes, in the dark. You can get a special bags to store potatoes in.

In our experience, the apples and potatoes need to be in completely different rooms, as well. Even being in a large room together will cause those darn potatoes to sprout like crazy.

Not sure if this was mentioned or not.

SDBookMom, thanks for sharing that.

I would have never thought about it either.

We buy our potatoes in 50 lb. bags and I bought a plastic clothes hamper with all the ventilation holes in both sides to store our potatoes in.

I think I paid around $10.00 for it at Wal-mart, lid included.

Then we just leave it sitting in our downstairs (underground) basement where it's nice and cool.

I just read in one of my gardening books that storing carrots with apples will cause the carrots to grow bitter. That explains what happened to my home grown carrots from last fall. I couldn't understand why the store bought ones in the upstairs fridge with no apples would taste better than mine.
