TheCG
I bought some of the white plastic lids for the regular Ball canning jars. The jars and lids are both Ball brand. They don't seal, at all! They're not even close to being watertight, much less air tight! I had wanted to use them for some stuff I can't use metal lids with, but so much for that idea. Do y'all know of any other lids that are NOT metal that can be used on them? Quote Link to comment
Violet
You mean the white plastic storage lids ? They are just for storing leftovers in the fridge or for a lid for freezing the jars. Try putting a piece of plastic wrap under it and see if that controls leaks. I don't have any problem with them, but I guess I am not understanding how they would leak if they are upright in your fridge. Quote Link to comment
TheCG
Violet, I discovered they leak when I tried to shake them to mix a powder into water. If they only work if I leave them upright in my fridge, they do not work for pretty much anything I would want to use them for other than capping jelly. Quote Link to comment
CoM
CG: They are just for the convenience of not having to deal with the 2 piece lid set every time you open a jar of anything you have canned that you have in the fridge. I love them so much that I give one to anyone I give a jar of jam, applesauce, keychup etc to.. Quote Link to comment
coastygirl
I have them and use them for all kinds of things. I do not put anything in them that I would consider storing long term. Just extra stuff that I make, ie.. salad dressing, croutons, leftovers.etc Quote Link to comment
rootdiggr
The plastic lids have their place, but they do not seal. I have 2 one peice metal lids that have the rubber, so they do stay tight. Wish I could find more of those. Quote Link to comment
Jeepers
I remember those Rootdiggr. If it's the ones I'm thinking about they were used for canning in the 1970's. I had some and used them a few times. The were discontinued for canning soon after they appeared. For one thing you couldn't take the band off and clean around the jar and I don't think they held the rubber seal down firmly enough without screwing the lids down tightly. Also, you had to buy the whole unit every year instead of just the lids. The main reason I used some of them was because in the 70's there was a huge shortage of both canning lids, rings and jars. If I'm not mistaken, they were even made by Ball. You can still get some here but not for canning! http://www.kitchenkrafts.com/product/white-caps-1-piece-12-pk?p=CHAMP http://www.kitchenkrafts.com/product/safety-seal-caps-1-pc-gold-12-pkg?p=CHAMP Edited to add links Edited February 24, 2013 by Jeepers Quote Link to comment
rootdiggr
Yep, those are the ones. I would not can with them, but they suit some other purchases. Thanks for the link! Quote Link to comment
ArmyOfFive4God
Do you have it on tight enough? I don't use the 1-pc lids for canning, but I've never had an issue with them leaking unless I just didn't have it on tight enough :/ Quote Link to comment

farmgirlwannabe
I was using the plastic lids on pint and quart jars in my husband's lunch box. Just the other day he asked me to use the 2 pc lids because the plastic ones kept leaking out. I played with water in a jar and sure enough, tight or looser they all leaked. They were new ones too.
