WHATCHA DOING TODAY?

Recommended Posts

I called the Dr. to make an appointment for my regular blood work and she asked if I could come in today? Heck yeah. I wanted to get it over with. I barely felt it but when I got home and took the bandage off I saw a huge red and purple welt. Looks like a big ugly bubble. Crimony, not my month for needles.

My bone density test came out normal though. Woot. They said to keep taking my calcium! Uh, I'm not taking calcium except what is in the Centrum Silver. And I don't take those every day. Big a$$ horse pills. Some days I look at them and think, no way am I trying to swallow that thing.

My turn signal went out. $10.79 to get the little bulb replaced. Not happy but what are gonna do? Cheaper than a wreck or a ticket...I think.

My bushes along the front porch have an aphid infestation. I believe the exact quote was "gorging on plant material." TruGreen wants $195.00 to dust/spray whatever, them. They left me a little sample in a plastic bag on my front door. Nice. Believe I can do that one myself.

Someone's grumpy and needs a nap.

Alot of the info that I've read up on says just mix yourself up a pump sprayer with some organic dish detergent and water and give them a spray. They'll gladly leave or die. I use that on our garden and so far we've been pretty successful and keeping most of the bugs away. I covered the heads of my cabbage plants with knee high hosiery and they seem to be doing ok too. Tonight I did cave in and dust with sevin vegetable dust. Plants looking too pretty and getting ready to make food to lose them.

Went over to the homestead place so MrWE2 could mow. I took care of some gardening and then pulled out a lawn chair, sprayed it with insect repellent and watched MrWE2 mow and offer him a cold Gatorade every now and then.

(((Jeepers))) Hope you feel better. Congrats on the bone density results. :)

Didn't do much yesterday. Keeping up with the watering takes 2 hours out of the day. The chickens like their swamp cooler - a canvas draped over their coop with the garden hose slowly dripping on it. When the temps go over 110, they all crowd into the wet area. Only one is laying lately, I don't blame them either.

Today is a big sigh of relief from the heat and watering chores. DH said it rained really hard last night. I slept right through it. :D It was lightly sprinkling earlier, while I was collecting puddles of water to put on the tomato plants. The can use all the help they can get. They are so spindly and shriveled. The 2 tomatoes are still green, on the one plant, nothing on the other 4 plants.

Waiting for a call from the specialist for DH's appointment schedule.

Feeling good. Not a lot happening today. I went to the library and picked up the new Ball Blue Book. I'll thumb through it tomorrow and see what it's all about.

We had 5 puppies born at SDP. One little one made it for two days and then passed over to the Rainbow Bridge. I usually don't think this way but this time it was probably for the best. Little girl kept having bad seizures.

But here is a picture of two of the little ones:

Went and picked up DH's MRI report and disc. Plugged the disc into his computer and browsed it. Ouch! I copied the disc to his computer, JIC.

Had company come over and chatted a while. We got a new bottle of Ortho Max. The ants were taking over the yard. I followed a large red ant and found its hole across the street in the neighbors yard and Amdro'ed it. They were stealing seed from the coop. I don't like them at all. The sugar ants were marching on trails all over and getting in the houst. That's when I declare war. Then, I discovered a nest of red/black ants near the garden, they will get poisoned tomorrow.

And harvested 6 pods of black eyed peas today. :)

Picked a few of our teeny tiny wild black raspberries, some domesticated red ones, and a few late strawberries.

Glad we got a nice crop of strawberries this year, will start freezing raspberries now for future jam. Wish me luck with the raspberry crop!

the black ones will taste good in a mixed berry batch.....'mystery' jelly, so to speak......its fun to hear what people think I made it from.

Still have some nice, pectin-filled wild crabapple juice, so will make up some more crabapple jelly - such a pretty pink! Now peaches are going cheap Im looking 'round for a peach jam recipe for my growing 'jelly audience'.

Canned 12 pints and 2 quarts of summer squash bread and butter pickles yesterday. Today 16 pints and 2 quarts of peaches and I have peach jelly going now from the scraps. That's about it for me!

Edited to remove sasquash from pickles!

That's so funny Miki. I love autocorrect...when it happens to other people. :D

Neighbors are gone for the weekend which is always a bonus. I wish they would be gone over the 4th. I really hate fireworks.

I went to the fruit/veggie market today and really loaded up on some fresh fruit. Now I have to eat it all before it goes bad. I love the stuff but even I can only eat so much. I might have gone overboard a tad but it all looked so good. My grandma used to say, "Our eyes were bigger than our belly."

Hope it's all safe to eat. Will probably be a big recall as soon as I finish it all off and throw away the packaging.

Drove to friends campsite yesterday to join several of them for dinner. Was nice to just relax with friends (even though we weren't camping ourselves) and share a good meal. One lady fixed an awesome salad because her boyfriend can't eat greens. She chopped up cauliflower into little pieces, added chopped almonds, dried cranberries, diced onions and then covered them with Vidalia Onion dressing. AWESOME! We picked up a big bag of frozen cauliflower and broccoli and I intend to make our "spin" on it, and will use raisins and probably coleslaw dressing. Today it's rained all day so the garden is getting a good watering and the rain barrels are full (of course). We drove to several of our favorite plain people stores and picked up some things I wanted; activated charcoal, bensonite clay, some quart jars for canning up the big chunks of lard we bought at another store, a couple of replacement bottles for essential oils that I use to make my insect repellent, some ground sausage, some whipped topping mix and some egg rolls. Enjoyed just "being out" even though it was in the rain...LOL Abby-girl doesn't give a hoot...just so she can go ride! It was still raining last time I looked. Just a nice, gentle rain. God's doing a wonderful job of watering/caring for our gardens in this area.

Jeepers, can the left overs. Lol.

DH insisted I order a pressure canner. Ack! Mom always WB everything. He said things are going to get worse. No relief in site. So, we got an AA, the 2014 Blue Ball Canning book and a Hanes repair book for the little car we bought. 95 and it gets 35 mpg.

Now, I'm going to be researching info and asking a lot of questions. That'll teach me, for not canning anything other than WB and jams/jellies.

LOL Annarchy. I could dehydrate them. I'm trying to make the supreme sacrifice and eat them raw. Sigh. It's a hard knock life. :0327:

Congrats on your canning endeavor. I find pressure canning food so much easier than what you can can in a water bath. Meat sounds scary but it's one of the easiest of all things to can. It all sounds like a lot of hard work, and it is, but you can take a few days of hard work and have filled jars to last a couple of years. I make enough canned bean soup in a couple of days to last me 3-4 years. It's just me here but still...

Ask away in the canning forum if you have questions. Maybe those of us who don't know can help look up the answers. The hardest part is setting your fears aside.

I've never used an All American. I have a Presto and I love it. Also have replacement parts for when I need them! The first time I used it, I had mom11 on the phone for quite a while. She was a blessing and has done more canning than I ever will! Good luck with your new venture, Ann!

I have a Presto too Miki and I love it. I have spare parts for it too. If I ever have to buy another one I'd buy the same one. I also have an older (can't think of the name of it :banghead:) that I've had since the 1970's. It's still good and I use it occasionally when I want two canners going. But it doesn't have a gauge, just the 'rocker'. I really like the gauge though. Put the rocker on, check the gauge, set the timer...done. Well, not quite that easy but, "Purt Near."

Edited: Mirro. The older one is a Mirro. I had to go look so I could sleep tonight. :motz_6:

Yeah Annarchy. Your dh is right! :canning:

Speaking of auto-correct.... I send out the prayer requests from my church via email. Got one a couple days ago. Stated that someone was having surgery for "glad stones"...... :shakinghead: I sent an email back checking that one. Yep....auto-correct didn't like "gall stones" so got creative. Sheeesh! Since I just copy/paste the requests.....I'm sure glad I caught that one!

I threw the equipment on my old horse and rode around the pasture tonite. I've done that 3 times now since returning from my trip. Short therapeutic rides. It helps and doesn't take much energy. My stamina is increasing. I haven't paid a big whopping price for being at my folks for hours on Thursday. :amen: Have had to rest but.....haven't felt AWFUL as well as resting. :cheer:

Also has helped greatly that we've been having COOL and cloudy days. Even drizzle/sprinkle rain most of today. Rained some during last nite too. :amen:

MtRider ......pork chops, taters, onions, and green beans in the cast iron pot in oven tonite. EZ cooking these days and oven not heating up house. :cook:

I was terrified the first time I used a pressure canner. DH borrowed his mom's, helped me get whatever we were canning ready and in the jars, then in the canner. Then he went to split wood and never thought to tell me that it would start steaming and I had to time it for 10 minutes before putting the weight on. I didn't even know there was a weight to put on. Before too long the steam started spewing out that little "spout" and I ran outside screaming that it was going to blow up! DH ran into the house, saw what was happening and had a good laugh as he set the timer and explained that I needed to put the weight on when the timer beeped.

Read the book carefully and ask about anything you don't understand. You will come to love it!

Canning for us is a must! We own two Presto canners and three of the really small "cookers" and love them all. An All American is on my wish list for one reason and one reason only...it has a flat bottom. If I never own one, I'll just keep it on my wish list! LOL

I've had a pretty good and quiet Birthday, today! Cooked and cleaned some this morning and rested mostly this afternoon. Should have a new (ish) camera coming Tues. My 11 year old canon digital died on me and I need it for ebay, if not for playing around. Found a really good deal on ebay, so if everything works, I will be set for awhile. The flash is worth more than I am paying for everything! I can do a return if there is a problem.

Have a happy Independence Day, everyone!

Happy Birthday, Miki! :balloons: Glad you're able to replace camera......since without that, you can't be "SnapshotMiki"

MtRider ;)

Exactly! LOL

Cooked out today, wrote a few drafts for ebay and did laundry. Very relaxing!
