WE2, I watched on TV the other day a doctor was showing taken a pad with the wings and putting it over face and the wings had the sticky stuff and he covered his nose and chin with the wings. I was laughing but after he fitted it on, it didn't look like a sanitary pad. 

 

I found some material that would work for mask, I ordered the elastic and the metal nose pieces but won't get them till May. I ordered it anyway but still looking. Jo Ann Fabric for us is a long way out about a one hour drive from us each way. I can order on line and then go do the drive by there to pick up as they have no on line orders. But they were out of the elastic also.  I am going to see if I can find what I need to get some made. But don't think it will be very easy to find any. I guess people jumped on the band wagon before they said we must wear mask now.

I like to craft, so fortunately I have a stash of supplies. I have been rummaging through my stash. I don't have exactly what I would LIKE, which is tightly woven cotton. I do have some elastic. I also have elastic hairbands, some old tights which can be cut into stretchy strips... lots of possibilities here. Now I am eyeing my stash of old sheets. They were meant for crisis bandages. But maybe.....

So.....do you have any undies that could be retired?  Elastic is in a lot of old clothes.  I always cut the elastic out to save... "Packrat with a Purpose" y'know.     How about some elastic gift wrap ribbon?  I have tons of sizes of rubber bands.  Might catch in hair if not covered.  

 

Or switch to a Velcro closure....adjustable.

If you retire a real surgical mask or N95....save the nose piece...

Y'know, I'm seeing a distinct lack of differentiation between people who were already prepped and people who go clear out all the shelves.

 

A friend of mine posted this on Facebook.  it's part of a grocery store manager's rant, supposed, about being nice to the grocery store workers.

 

I'm wondering if she actually read the whole thing, 'cause I'm pretty certain her family is one that preps.

 

Definitely part of why you don't tell people what you have available.

the problem is not so much the surveillance per se.....to me anyways, I'm boring..........but in what the powers that be choose to DO with the information.  We all KNOW how hard (impossible) it is for those bean counting bureaucratic control freaks to resist using it to advance their own personal vision on everybody else.....after all they do not want to waste all that perfectly good data any more than they want to waste a perfectly good crisis    the unscrupulous will use ANYTHING to advance their desires.

Yeah, for industrial purposes...   But I'd think the tied ones would slide.  I can't ever keep scrubs-type pants up with those ribbon ties.  Perhaps elastic ties would be a happy middle between the two problems.  [and I wish I could find/make elastic ties for my pants!]

 

For At-Home purpose, I never wash on high heat....nor do I put anything with elastic in the dryer.  I have outdoor clothesline and inside places to hang for drying.  At our altitude, the sunshine UV is a potent sterilizer.  If I leave the newspaper out on the clothesline, it only takes a couple days for the print to begin to fade.

Ties like ear loops and buttons sewn to hats to loop them around.  If you can go to the extra effort, you can do either buttons on the masks or on the hat and put button holes on the other.

Yeah, Kappy.     I saw an article that stated how many thousands of Chinese cell phone accounts were shut down during the beginning month(s) of this pandemic.  Assuming that those folks died....meaning the numbers reported are waaaay under estimated. 

 

So data is already being used for  the purpose of gathering data .....on a foreign country.

CG, that’s so scary. I’ve seen quite a few people who have run out of basics and are calling anyone that has the stuff they need hoarders. I find it really insulting that someone calls us hoarders because we made responsible choices...but I have stayed out of the conversations because I’m not putting a target on my head.

The only reason I am having to help my granddaughter out is because they had to move 3000 miles away and was not able to prepare. Military. She had just gotten her food situation taken care of as I had sent her to big boxes of food right after they got into the house as they ran out to get food just to find the shelves empty.  So what I sent was very helpful. They were caught off guard as the Navy was moving them and because it was 3000 miles away, she was unable to buy food at the time.  Now her DH has the coronavirus and she has still not been able to buy bleach, Lysol, wipes or nothing. Her DH was able to get mask and gloves from the naval hosp. He was exposed to the virus at the naval hosp. on Monday and is now in full blow coronavirus.  High temp.  cough, congestion and hard to get a deep breath. Granddaughter is already heavy on Vits. mainly C and D3. I am sending her some supplies for cleaning.  One of the reasons I ordered what I have very early on. As you cannot get Lysol or any things else on line or in stores where she is. Can't get it here either. So my reason for granddaughter needing help is not from her just not preparing but because they were not able to at the time of the moving.  They moved into Washington State at the worse time possible. I can't call what I did hoarding but to help family.  So far no neighbors has asked for anything but then no one knows what I have either. 

 

But like Dogmom said,  they may call us hoarders but we are not the ones that emptied the shelves. We bought a little at a time and built on that each month for many months and years.  And now it is paying off for my granddaughter as the ones in the stores panic buying now are the ones that are emptying the shelves. There is a big difference in preparing for the unknown and panic buying after the unknow has come into full view.

For washing any fabrics, clothing or masks that you wear when out in public, it is important to take precautions when washing them. Using CDC flu virus guidelines, clothing and reusable masks should be washed at a temperature of at least 167 degrees. That is the minimum temperature proven to kill the flu virus. 1)  Does ANYONE have their hot water set for 167* F ??????   Quoting Water Heater Hub:  "Water heaters are factory set at OSHA recommended levels, around 140 degrees." 

 

2)  If you need water that hot, why do they say merely soap and water washing hands will be sufficient?  I'm not washing my hands at those temperatures.

 

3)  To be clear, the CDC is listing different methods for killing the virus....not that you have to use all of them at once.  Scalding water OR soap OR .......

 

   THIS is why too much of the public is confused and stupid.    Cuz STUPID is working for the news media.  What editor checks these articles????? 

 

For petes sake, hand wash the cloth masks with usual hot water and a soap or detergent.  Dish soap works.  This virus cell has a fatty outer covering .....therefore: soap breaks it down.  So does scalding water, if you prefer.  I believe UV light does too, but that's my OPINION.

There is no way to set the hot water tank that high. I checked mine and it only goes up to 140*.  If I can't hang clothes outside on line I have  sanitation button on my dryer and that gets really hot. Take the clothes out right after it cuts off and it will burn you. I have to let it cool down a bit before removing the clothes. My old dryer didn't have that feature. 

 

Boris the prime minister in now in ICU and got worse right after they put him in there. Don't think he has been incubated yet though. 

 

My granddaughter's DH is no better today and they still have not gotten the results of the test.  Granddaughter told me today she is tired, a slight cough and a bit of congestion.  Sounds like she also may be coming down with it and we are 3000 miles away and can't help her other than to send needed supplies.  Sent the cleaning supplies today but will still be a few days before she gets them.  Told her to take a bar of soap and a rag and soap up the rag and clean the door knobs and to wear gloves and then wash hands when she is done cleaning. That is about the only thing I can think of for her to clean with right now till her box comes.   Needless to say my brain is fried, worrying about those two. 

And now they are talking about pets.  A tiger from a zoo has tested positive and my granddaughter has 2 dogs and a cat. They said so far no dogs or cats have become sick or tested positive for this virus.

I wish somebody would tell them about the hydrotherapy treatments!  The hospital has nothing that will cure the virus. The hydrotherapy is so simple and it really works. I wish everybody could know about it.

Daylily, I don't think I have ever heard that mentioned anywhere as a treatment.  Very interesting to know. Will have to check into that. I know some nurses that works at one of the hospitals here. Maybe I should put a bug in their ears. Would be something worth checking into.
