Mt_Rider
yeah, even Yemen is shooting up. Colorado crested just over 1,000 deaths today --- deaths FROM COVID.....not with COVID. Every number has a name.... China.....I went back to last Friday.... 84,034. Today reporting 84,063. Almost a week later, increase of 29 cases. AND YET they are locking down more cities in NE corner near NKorea. Hmmmm.....obviously not believing that country! Kinda think Florida's "miscalculations" are not as bad as China's.... But still, what standard should WE hold? Feel sorry for the ones who are sticking their finger in the dike to hold back all the misinformation and other shenanigans. Speaking of holding back massive water.....sheeeesh! Did you hear about Michigan's dams? Due to LOT of rain, one burst [pics are astounding!] and another is overflowing but hasn't broken ...yet. LOT of people evacuated. I hope they all got out. MtRider ....wow. Link to comment
TheCG
This ticks me off and makes me doubt numbers in general. From our city's Facebook page: "The 123rd confirmed case is a male in his 50s who was tested by a private provider. The male is currently self-isolating at home. The male is currently in California and has not been in Midland since January. The male will not return to Midland until he has recovered. The source of exposure is contact to known case." WHY is he counted as a case here in Midland? Is he ALSO counted as a case in California? ETA: One of the comments says that they count people in their place of residence. That just made me doubt ALL the numbers because we have a HUGE transient population here due to the oilfield. Edited May 21, 2020 by TheCG 1 2 Link to comment
Ambergris
That's what I was wondering when I read --was it Montana?--some state counting both residents who were sick elsewhere and visitors sick here. How many people are being counted twice? And the "recovered" numbers have to be an act of pure fantasy. I got pretty much better, mostly, but first the cough and then the fever came back, then the weakness, and now the kidney pain. I bet my legs will be aching tomorrow. All my symptoms in reverse order of their initial appearance. I'm seeing a pulmonary specialist Monday. Theoretically. 1 1 Link to comment

kappydell
Has anybody noticed the recruitment efforts for government hired or contracted "contact tracers" underway? I thought about it BUT then I thought about all that data and just who would be accessing it and how it could get mis-used. No way I am party to that. I understand that already the military is considering having had covid, even though cured, as a denial factor for those who want to join the military. What happens if covid exposure becomes a "pre-existing condition" for insurance denial purposes? I see all kinds of ways for unintended consequences (as they like to call them) arising from having/being in close contact with a covid person. NoNoNo....hope my cynical side is wrong, but Im not getting in that boat! There are already those who are pushing for 'mandatory' vaccinations and microchipping for treatment & tracking. Holy Brave New World, Batman! So I have stepped up my training program to get as healthy and strong as I can just in case I have to barter work/hunting/physical labor if they get crazy enough to tie my social security and/or pension to mandatory vaccinations. Now I sound like a candidate for a tinfoil hat and a net...so keeping my misgiving to myself, and NOT participating in this "contact tracing". 2 1 Link to comment
Jeepers
I agree Kappy. I do not want their vaccine. I never thought about it being tied to our Social Security. It reminds me of the Amish and their shunning practices. If one of their members is being shunned, they are not allowed social contact with them nor take any favors from them. That includes working with or for them. If they do, they risk being shunned too. So if we can not prove we took the vaccine, would that mean no buying or selling or employment. If someone is caught interacting with us would they risk punishment too? If course they would. All hypothetical. I At least for now... 1 Link to comment

And being a corona-type virus [common cold, flu ] that's a likely possibility. ---Will it keep returning....wiping out the elderlies until only the Millennials are left as the oldest? OK...that was tongue-in-cheek. We've had a few over 100 yrs old beat this thing! Right? But vaccinations....rushed to market..... .... OK, the word 'RUSHED' is problematic. But so is the word 'MARKET'. Market means profit and we all know how PROFIT means ever so much more to some folks than ETHICS and RESPONSIBILITY. I might be hiding from profit ....er, I mean vaccines as much as from the COVID itself! Hmph! MtRider ....yeah, I'm kinda queasy about "contact tracers" too! I don't know why this has occurred. Corrections would be the best guess. I am focusing on these because, while "confirmed" patients may be double counted, and dead people may be presumed to have died of covid, someone who is in the hospital is under a lot of hands and eyes, and is subject to a lot of paperwork. Some pneumonia cases or weird cases might get listed as covid admissions for higher funding, but your average flu case won't--or apparently isn't, considering the unusually high numbers of flu cases and flu deaths being reported. Anyway, these are the end of the day numbers on May 27. 1 Link to comment
Ambergris
I take that back. The CDC says the flu-like illness is just over 1% under baseline reporting this week and last week. They think people are not seeking medical care because of the corona virus. 2 Link to comment
Mt_Rider
CO went up about 200 cases since yesterday. Only 36 more were hospitalized tho....21 deaths [using death-from-COVID stats]. Our county is staying quite steady.... thankful for that. MtRider 1 Link to comment

Ambergris
Clickbait article supposedly about 24 states with uncontrolled virus outbreaks Overall, it contains insufficient data to sustain that premise. 1. Texas As hundreds of people recently gathered at the state's capital to protest, calling for restrictions to be lifted, some models are predicting that Texas will see cases surge as soon as next month. For example, Harris County, which includes Houston, could see 2,000+ cases every day come this June. "We're not equipped to handle that type of surge," Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said, according to KSAT. The state has 54,509 confirmed cases and 1,506 deaths as of May 25th. Texas is at the top of the study's list of those at "highest risk." 2. Arizona Arizona is lifting restrictions, which has some doctors worried, given that the state has 16,339 confirmed cases and 800 deaths, as of May 25th. "My concern is that people might think that because the state is opening, that the virus has gone away. The virus is still here," Dr. Marjorie Bessel, the chief clinical officer for Banner Health, the state's largest health system, told AZ Central. "We have more than 400 people hospitalized right now in our system who are either COVID positive or under suspicion. We have 100 people on ventilators in that same category….The threat of the pandemic will not substantially go away for some time." 3. Illinois The state is taking measures to reopen responsibly, despite the outbreak, and 108,000 confirmed cases and 4,790 deaths as of May 25th. In Chicago, reports the Chicago Tribune: "In the next phase of reopening, retailers can allow customers at 50% of their normal capacity or five customers per 1,000 feet of retail space, and 'service counter' businesses … can operate with signage displayed at the entrance notifying customers of social distancing and facial covering requirements and cleaning procedures." 4. Colorado No date for reopening has been given, but the government is considering a plan for restaurants to reopen, despite having 23,964 confirmed cases and 1,327 deaths as of May 25th: "No more than 50 people, or half of normal maximum occupancy, would be allowed to dine at restaurants that adhere to the guidelines and restrictions. Food pickup and delivery still would be encouraged." 5. Ohio Deaths recently doubled in a 24 hour period. At the time of publication, "that brings the state's novel coronavirus death toll to 1,956, with 200 of those listed as 'probable' rather than confirmed. Of the newly recorded 84 deaths, 19 are listed as 'probable,'" reports Cincinnati.com. The state has 31,408 confirmed cases as of May 25th. 6. Minnesota "As crowds lined up for a second day of free COVID-19 testing at six National Guard armories around Minnesota on Sunday, the state saw its number of confirmed cases climb past 20,000," reported MPR News on May 24th. "The death toll now stands at 869." And confirmed cases are 19,845 as of May 25th. 7. Indiana "The Indiana Department of Health reports 487 new positive cases of COVID-19 and 12 additional deaths Sunday," reported WPTA21. "Indiana's total positive cases increased to 31,376 and the death toll increased to 1,824. Those new positive cases and deaths were recorded between May 19 and May 23." 8. Iowa "Sunday's numbers bring the statewide total to 17,213 positive COVID-19 cases and 450 deaths," reported KCCI on May 24. 9. Alabama "At a Thursday press conference, Steven Reed, the mayor of Montgomery, Alabama, said his city's hospitals have run out of beds in their Intensive Care Units, where coronavirus patients are normally treated," reported Newsweek. "The lack of beds is partly caused by patients driving in from rural areas that lack hospitals." As of May 25th, the state has 14,152 confirmed cases and 551 deaths. 10. Wisconsin The state has 14,877 confirmed cases and 507 deaths, as of May 25th. The percent of positive cases follows an up and down trend. 11. Mississippi "As state leaders continue to relax statewide safety measures and businesses reopen, Mississippi reported its highest ever weekly count of COVID-19 cases," reports Mississippi Today. "The startling weekly statistics come days after Gov. Tate Reeves announced additional safety restrictions would be relaxed." The state has 13,005 confirmed cases and 616 deaths. 12. Tennessee "A month after Tennessee began to reboot its economy after shutdowns intended to thwart the spread of coronavirus, most of the state's 95 counties are not seeing noteworthy growth of the virus. But there are exceptions," reports the Independent Herald. "Putnam County, Rhea County, Hamilton County and Loudon County are among those exceptions in the eastern half of the state—with Cumberland County earning a dubious honorable mention." The state has 19,789 confirmed cases and 329 deaths as of May 25th. 13. Florida The state has 50,127 confirmed cases and 2,233 deaths as of May 25th. "Here in Miami-Dade, they've been doing some studies of the saltwater on the beaches to make sure they're not contaminated," said Dr. Aileen Marty, an infectious disease expert at Florida International University, told Tampa Bay 10. "Our wastewater is chock-full of the virus." 14. Virginia Those flocking to Virginia beaches over Memorial Day weekend unnerved authorities. The state has 36,244 confirmed cases and 1,171 deaths as of May 25th, with the most cases and deaths in Fairfax County. 15. New Mexico The state has 6,785 confirmed cases and 308 deaths as of May 25th. Reports KQRE: "We're monitoring closely the spread of COVID all across the state, and we're seeing an alarming increase in the number of cases in the southern part of the state, particularly along the Texas, New Mexico border," said Dr. David Scrase, Secretary of the Health and Human Services Department. 16. Missouri The state made the national news this week: The Hill reported a second Missouri hairstylist may have exposed 56 clients to COVID-19, according to officials. The state has 11,752 confirmed cases and 676 deaths as of May 25th. 17. Delaware There may be a bright side here: "On this 62nd day of Delaware's stay-at-home order, the state continues to see progress in the fight against COVID-19," reports WDEL. "Based on 1,336 new test results, the Delaware Division of Public Health reported Sunday that the number of recovered patients increased by 144 from the day before to 4598." The state has a total of 8,690 confirmed cases and 324 deaths as of May 25th. 18. South Carolina The state has 9,895 confirmed cases and 425 deaths as of May 25th. "Richland and Greenville counties continue to be hot spots for infections," reports The State. 19. Massachusetts The Imperial College researchers found that 13% of the state's residents have been infected. The state has 91,662 confirmed cases and 6,304 deaths, as of May 25th. 20. North Carolina The state reported its highest one-day spike of cases over Memorial Day weekend. It has 22,725 confirmed cases and 737 deaths, as of May 25th. 21. California Coronavirus cases have been linked to church services, food plants and up and down the state. The state has 90,631 confirmed cases and 3,708 deaths as of May 25th. 22. Pennsylvania The statewide shutdown is expected to end on June 5th. Meanwhile: The state has 66,983 coronavirus cases and 5,096 deaths, as of May 25th. 23. Louisiana The state has 37,040 confirmed cases and 2,560 deaths, as of May 25th. The good news is hospitalizations are decreasing. "The number of reported hospitalizations related to the disease caused by the new coronavirus continues to drop in Louisiana, according to figures posted by the state health department Sunday," reports the AP. 24. Maryland Baltimore is leading the region in positive test rates. The state has 45,495 confirmed cases and 2,130 deaths, as of May 25th. 2 Link to comment
Mt_Rider
....one of my posts didn't show up. It said in part.....Thanks Ambergris, for showing that Hawai'i is in last place for COVID per capita -- #50. Does a mom/Grmom's heart good! CO is #25....not bad. Our gov did open restaurants is past Wed. Not all of them opened....yet. DH's didn't ...yet. He's in no hurry. We have 2 towns with casinos and they are not allowed to open yet. The gov said it will be up to the individual counties since there is so much difference in COVID in some of the low-population counties. Sounds fair. Still restriction on gyms....cuz it's a bad idea to restrict one's breathing with a mask while working out???? MtRider Edited May 30, 2020 by Mt_Rider 3 Link to comment
