Another Cousin Died Today

Recommended Posts

Seems like a lot of illness and deaths have hung around my family lately. Today I got a call from one cousin saying that one of our other cousins had died. She had been in assisted living for about 3 years with full on dementia. She was a very lovely and quiet woman.  She used to always remind me that she gave me my first toy when I was born. A little giraffe. She was probably around 10 years at that time. When we would see each other I'd always whisper in her ear..."Hi mom" she would always whisper back, "Hi daughter" Such a sweet secret memory between us. She was close to my mothers age and she looked so much like her and sounded just like her with a soft voice. My own mother died when I was 18 years old so she really did help keep my mom's memory alive because I could still see what my own mom would look like and sound like decades later.

Through my cousin Connie I was able to steal a glimpse and a sound of my mother from 50 years ago.

She did have one especially bright feather in her cap that she was proud of. Her only daughter (the baby in the family) is married to the mayor of Indianapolis. He is such a great guy that we all decided to forgive his politics.  LOL

Rest peacefully sweet cousin.

I’m sorry for your loss, Jeepers.  Both for your cousin and for the reminders of your Mother.  Thankfully those memories still linger? :hug3:

Thank you ladies! She was a sweet lady and very soft spoken. Like my own mother, I never heard either one of them raise their voice or say a cuss word. Not even poop. LOL. Her daughter is the same way and in my opinion looks so much like her mom. I'll miss her but wouldn't wish her back.

They say deaths come in threes. Not at my house. First my cousin then ex brother in law then ex uncle in law. I don't consider the Ex's to be Ex's though. We have stayed close family for over 50 years.

Yesterday son called and told me that one of my cousin's son died in a car crash. The cousin was like a big brother to me. We come from large extended families and he and I were the only two 'only child' people in the bunch. He was 15 years older than me and sort of took me under his wing. I lived with him and his mom for a year in kindergarten and first grade while my mom and her new husband went to Florida to seek out a new life for us. It was a long seek.   Four years later and back to Indiana, I spent every weekend and part of the summers at cousin and aunts house. My cousin died in 2001 and it was quit upsetting to me. I used to babysit his two kids in 1969. Cousin even named his son (the one who just died) after me. We both have the middle name Lee. He was 54 years old.

Made me cry today  :sad-smiley-012:

So in about 50 days I've lost 4 very close family members. Plus DIL's mother in July.  Five people in five months.  :sigh:

Thanks for bearing with me while writing this out. It really did help me to get things straight in my mind. Time is slipping away so fast. While memories last a lifetime sometimes the finer details slip. I'm going to start a family tree of sorts in Excel to chronicle birth/death dates, ages and causes of death. It might be interesting to someone decades from now. Maybe a great-great grand child will stumble across it some day. Kinda like Little House on the Prairie. More like Small Farm Town in Indiana.

I’m so sorry, Jeepers.   It’s hard to find a way to wrap your mind around so many losses so close together.  Life does go on but those empty places in our hearts never really fill. :hug3:
