Jeepers
I took DIL to Costco and Sam's Club today. Actually, she drove. Sam's was sort of a bust. We didn't get very much there. The one thing I really wanted, biscotti, they were out of. Costco is just down the road and we went there. We had to circle the parking lot twice before we could find a parking spot. It was in the boonies but we were glad to get it. The place is always very busy but today it was insane. We got there around 10:00am. I only bought a couple of things as I had shopped locally last week. They did have the biscotti so I was a happy camper. I got sons stocked up pretty well for winter now. She'll have to supplement the fresh stuff and she packs DGS lunch so she might have to get more of that stuff. The school is sort of picky about what they bring as far as food is concerned. But they won't starve at least until the first of the year. I kept telling her I'd fill her car up with gas while we were out. But she said it was almost full. Fine. On my way back out to my house my darn gas light came on and I was 10 miles from town. I was worried about her gas gauge and I was running on fumes myself. That has never happened before. I always keep it half full. Sigh. I got home and put one of the 5 gallon gas containers in the tank. It got it to around 1/4 full. I wanted to use the old gas anyway but not like that! That can was so heavy and I spilled some on my jeans. Tonight I'll be doing laundry and tomorrow morning I'll be filling my car up with gas. Glad I had gas out here. I think before I do the laundry I'll empty the other cans and refill them with fresh in town tomorrow. I ended up at Wal-Mart for some totes. I decided I'd store my med stuff in the totes and stack them in a closet. I spied the under the bed totes but they were on the top shelf and there was no way I could reach them. I was too tired to track down help so I didn't buy any. Next time I'll either ask or take son with me. I'm beat tonight so it's on the heating pad with some ice cream and binge watch a British TV show I found on Amazon Prime. After I empty the other gas can and start the laundry. It was dark around 4:30pm here tonight. I hate that it gets dark so early. 5 Quote Link to comment
Littlesister
Jeepers, it was dark here also around 4:30. I hate this fallback garbage. I don't have as much time to work outside on the raised bed garden. My next-door neighbor wasn't feeling well this morning so didn't go with me today. Nor did she call me after her kids went home to go last night. So, I left this morning and went to Good Will to empty the car and then off to Big Lots. Yep, they are going out of business. 25% off right now. They are being used to bring stuff from other Big Lots stores. The back stock room was packed. I did get a few things and a couple of huge flowerpots. I might start the garlic in one of those. If I get the chance I might go back and get the last 3 if they are still there. Going in the morning to vote and could then head out back to Big Lots to see if they still have them. I did get some time to move some things around in the pantry and tighten up. I have some jars of things I dehydrated and the rice I pulled out of the freezer needs to go in there. And I still need to get things put away again in that one cabinet in kitchen I had cleaned out. It is still empty. I also have a prescription to pick up tomorrow also. Trying to figure out the best way to get my trip in order. One way to go vote and to head to Big Lots. Need to go the other direction to pick up prescription and head to DGD's house. Just need to plan the timing of all of it. 4 Quote Link to comment

Mt_Rider
Blessed, It's so hard with our furry family cuz they can't tell us ...oh, yeah. I ate that furry pink thing... or whatever. BBBRBRRRRBRBBRBBBBBRRRRRRRRRR! WINTER HAS ARRIVED. 3 inches or more thru the night. And exactly NONE of it is gone by sunset tonite. More is expected while the High and Low pressure systems play game in the country's Southwest region. I am not amused. Older I get, the less I tolerate being cold....and slippery! ...yeah, that. All the way down the driveway walking dog. Flat wasn't bad. DH drove us up. However, the day wasn't a total loss. Oddly, without really thinking about it, I've been taking on some small areas to CLEAN (soooo much dust in old log cabins) and ORGANIZE . Initially to clear last of traveling stuff out of the way of using the pellet stove. (see above regarding COLD) Thus clear porch before it's really cold. Check! Then I had room to put the final carry on inside the suitcase on porch. Check! Then there was room to actually sort and move the rest of the stuff that can be in front of the pellet stove during SUMMER. ..... it is certainly not summer now. So all that stuff has been relocated. ( not all has a "home" yet but it's not near the pellet stove.) There was some squirming on par with a gymnast to get the electric cord plugged in for the pellet stove....and a second one for my Call Mom alarm clock. But got it done. .....we have to be extra careful (log cabin) to not overload any one circuit. We know what's together on each circuit and we're ok. Afterall , there are usually only 2 outlets in any room. Only one in bathroom. Only 2 circuit breakers for the outlets in the whole house. But the breakers, etc in the box have been greatly upgraded in recent years. I also cleaned a small cabinet next to the bed. Oye...dust! Now that's done. That was less than 2 square feet and took me quite a while. Hmph! At that rate, I'll be 92 before getting thru the whole cabin....which is the point. There really is zero chance of ever keeping up with the dust in here. But...organizing will stay in place moderately well. And I get satisfaction from that. So winter protocols - insulation/covers for windows. I did some of that too. Glad you got your "kids" stocked up, Jeepers. LOL It will keep them at their house longer...and not moving in with you! Cute bee, Miki. Something fits too loose....that's a great thing, huh? Little Sister...good luck on your hunt for the final touches in your "switch around rooms" project! You've been working hard! MtRider ...almost time for bed. ...what else was I going to do....??? 3 1 Quote Link to comment
Littlesister
Blessed homemaker, for your furry and faithful friend to get well. Hopefully nothing serious. Mt. Rider, I have always heard that dust just comes through the walls of a log cabin. I hate dusting but a much-needed chore. I have been working on things in house since 5am. Organizing things now and getting stuff all together into one central location to be put where it belongs. Around 10 I will go vote head to Big Lots and praying they still have those last 3 huge flowerpots. Then come home for a bit and then head to store to pick up prescription and head to DGD's house to keep the baby so they can go vote. I can't say I blame them for not wanting to take the baby out to a voting booth. You never know what might happen or I should say where they have to go vote at. Portsmouth is one of those places you don't want to be near if it hits the fan. But at least where they live it isn't too bad, and the house is tucked away in a nice quiet neighborhood. 4 Quote Link to comment
snapshotmiki
Praying for your pup @blessedhomemaker71. I hope he is better this morning! Will walk first. Go vote with DH. Take my friend to different place to vote. Some banking. Dentist to ask for antibiotics for DH who has to have a tooth pulled in a month. Starting to do filing that I can and put away some as I go. Cooking garbanzo beans in crockpot. Should take the day so I don't concentrate on election crap. 4 Quote Link to comment

Littlesister
Glad to know he is drinking water. Hopefully he won't get dehydrated. Maybe he just has a bit of a bug, and it will pass soon. Poor baby. He's in my prayers. After I went to vote, I headed back out to Big Lots. They still had the flowerpots. So now I need to fill one with garden soil and get the garlic planted. Still cleaning up and organizing. Moved some of the canned food from pantry to kitchen. Sort of a restock from pantry to kitchen right now. Worked in garage a little bit also. I have the shop vac, pressure washer, and something else I can't think of at the moment and 2 fans and a couple of heaters that need a new home either in shed or a corner in the garage. Right now, they are all sitting in the middle of the floor. I will get it all figured out. My shoulder is hurting rather bad right now. So, I think I over did the heavy lifting. Jeepers
Hopefully puppers is just having a bit of a K-9 flu. Glad he is drinking. He probably knows food will just make him sick. I had some big plans that didn't exactly turn out. Shocking I know. Since I ran the car out of gas, and put one 5 gal gas can worth in, I figured I'd put another can in and refill the empty cans. Long story short, most of the gas ended up all over my jeans and shoes. I have 4 siphons and I could not find one of them. I let the jeans air out and they are now in their second round in the washer. They might be a lost cause. Shoes probably are too. They are still in the garage. I got a shower right away but I still smell like gasoline. Good thing I don't smoke, that's all I can say. Since I only have one pair of jeans, that I can find, I didn't get into town to top off the gas tank and refill the gas cans. If it's warm tomorrow, I'll put on my shorts and go buy another pair of jeans. Two rounds in the washer and they still stink. Badly. I decided to start freezer cooking. Sigh. I got 6 pounds of hamburger cooked and 2 big roasts and...I can not find my freezer trays. I know where they are in the garage but the movers have them all boxed in. I can't get to any of them without going through all of the stuff out there. I ordered more. They won't arrive until Thursday. Probably Thursday night. Crimony. At least some of the prep work will be done. Whoop-tee-doo. I'll try for town tomorrow. And it will definitely be a dunkin' donut day! 5 Quote Link to comment

Mt_Rider
Oye, Jeepers! When you're out, also buy a siphon that works. We're too old to lift and hold a 5 gallon of ANYthing! The siphon we have requires a chair or over-turned bucket to set on for it to reach for my truck. Hope your jeans will release the aroma/gaseous portion of the gas in the rain... but you might need a very strong soap to break up the residue of the gasoline. Soak them in a tub/tote outside? Change water and soak again? {snicker...just had a vision of Jeepers outside her house in her "knickers" attending to her one pair of jeans (1 pair that are currently located anyway!) Ah sistah! You'll still have a lot of stories to tell us as you slowly get moved in! But eventually, you'll be sitting in your new home with your GrSon playing and lovin' on his beloved Grma! That's what you're aiming for!!! MtRider 4 Quote Link to comment
Mt_Rider
OK....I'm trying to not wear black for mourning - - the loss of Autumn! But according to the 3-4" we still have with no sunshine to melt anything....and a rotten forecast of a lot more inches.... ...like over a foot in the next few days. Maybe a lot over a foot. You know - This Is early! CO highway department had to close part of ...I think Interstate 70 due to bad winter weather conditions tonite. Not Fall weather. WINTER! Maybe we'll warm up again and have November weather around Thanksgiving? Dunno... So we need to check the antifreeze levels in the truck and car. But I need to start the truck....get it running and warmed up....so I can park it down by the road. That is our custom when we get a whole bunch of snow and mebbe can't get out with the car? Calling snowplow guy is also on the list for tomorrow. Cuz more and more INCHES are in this week's forecast. I did walk a mile tonite with dog. Looked over at the beaver pond which is now frozen. Probably still water underneath. Very overcast almost all day so I'm wearing a blaze yellow vest on my back and headlamp on my head. Dog's leash is also blaze yellow. Don't know if it's reflective. I pull her in close when I hear a vehicle anyway. And try not to flash my headlamp directly at a driver. Just swing my head across the windshield so I know they've seen us. Soooo nice to have the pellet stove warming the house again. Little Sister mentioned dust coming in a log cabin between logs. Yes, but it shouldn't be. Modern log homes mostly are shaved flat on two sides. So they lay "tight-er" against each other. Sometimes an insulating pad between the logs. Ours is not modern built. It has 'chinking' plastered between the logs. Cement type stuff (not moss/mud like pioneers) but the logs shrink as they age and most of the chinking is loose.....some drops down in bits. Sometimes a small chunk comes loose. Adds greatly to the DUST issue! They really need to redo the chinking from the outside. There is absolutely NO way they can do anything of that magnitude on the inside, until we move out. But that should be done too. Just doing the outside would seal out the dust, wind, tiny bugs, COLD, etc. We have a tradition with the owners: we don't ask for much except vital stuff and they don't raise the rent. Mebbe raise the rent and lower the heating bill? Anyway, I'm pleased at the progress I'm making in organizing/cleaning. FINALLY. Have not been able for so long. I'm feeling pretty good right now, oddly, since I was recently traveling. And fall usually finds me flattened! But I don't want to waste any energy on snow removal! MtRider .... God controls the weather so...... 3 Quote Link to comment
Jeepers
@out_of_the_ordinary. it is worth a try. At this point I have nothing to lose. If nothing else they will get aired out. @Mt_Rider. I have 4 regular siphons and 1 battery operated one. They are all buried someplace in the garage. I'm going to buy yet another one when I'm in town. I know the manual ones works because I transfered gas from the 5 gal cans into the 14 gal one over a year ago. I can't believe I nearly ran out of gas. Especially when I was nagging DIL to fill her tank up. And the day before the election. I was out there semi dressed. It was dark, raining and the area is between the house and garage. I was in my usual uniform. Tee shirt and undies. BUT I did have some shoes on. I was using a 4 step ladder for help. I put my foot on a step and rested the jug on my knee while pouring. Epic fail. It leaked all down my leg into my shoes. Said ladder is outside holding up my pants now. Both stink. Issue is the movers buried everything that I knew where everything was. (That sentence didn't make sense, but that's the best I can do right now.) Not their fault. Everything had to go someplace but sheeesh. I also couldn't find my dehydrator. I'm just glad I found the canners. All the hamburger is fried and the fat is picked off the beef hunks. I'll probably go ahead and pressure cook the chicken tomorrow. Assuming I have room for it in the fridge. I was so focused on getting the food in the house to cook that I forgot to make sure I had the containers ready. Rookie. DGS is loving having me babysit. We watch soccer all night and play ball in the house and drink all the Gatorade we want. Rebels. 3 Quote Link to comment
Jeepers
@Mt_Rider. I heard 5 states were under a snow advisory but I didn't know if it was for you or not. It's funny we always know winter is coming but it seems to catch us by surprise anyway. I don't have a snow shovel nor some ice melt for the porch. Not sure where my winter jacket is either. My house garage still needs to get stuff up off of the floor before snow melts off the car. I don't have a snow removal guy lined up out here so I'm liable to get snowed in. I don't even care. When I see it snow, I'll go out and run the car up and down the driveway to keep a path going. Hoosier snow removal. I'm glad you are feeling better and are having a burst of energy. Keep it up! 3 2 Quote Link to comment
Mt_Rider
Well, my reaction to your post just above the last one is and everything in between. Semi-dressed in the rain! Brrr - it's snowing here! I remembered you talked about types of siphons but figured they'd be in the piles in the garage SOMEwhere. Jeeps, don't be too hard on yourself - you have been thru SO MUCH! Your poor brain is probably choking along at half mast! You might want to go a little slower....with a lot of planning out your next steps. I'm saying this because of our experience after our entire country neighborhood was on wildfire EVAC, we were all like shell shocked. The ole brain was definitely skipping beats. And we were much younger then. Tho this move was something you chose, it was still not completely within your control and it went so sideways with the motel and all. It is truly no wonder that you'd struggle for a while - even now that you've arrived at your goal. Your next goal: ( BESIDES QUIETING YOUR OCD...) ... to hurry up and get settled before the Hooey Hits the Fan..... Mebbe yes. Mebbe no. But also resting and gearing down to wherever your brain can handle the speed. The phrase: "This too, shall pass!" is a survival phrase for me. Keeps me from too much of that ------==> MtRider ....and you have all of us and for you! Edited November 6, 2024 by Mt_Rider 3 1 Quote Link to comment

out_of_the_ordinary
Jeepers, I agree with MtRider...after hanging the jeans out in the rain, I would soak them in a bucket or something, going heavy on the soap. Maybe in something like Dawn dish soap? After, you would want to rinse them very, very, very well before putting them in the washing machine. Maybe you could do the soak and then hose them off outside? It was near 80 here yesterday. Everything is so DRY. We need rain! Unfortunately, the local volunteer fire depts have been very busy. It has been very dry and very breezy, and yet people are burning the leaves in their yard...which is resulting in brush fires. Edited November 6, 2024 by out_of_the_ordinary 2 2 Quote Link to comment
Littlesister
Jeepers, get some Borax and a detergent that will remove odors. I think Tide makes one that will remove odors. And try washing them in that. Also, depending on the shoes you could wash them or wipe them down in a solution of Tide and Borax if they are cloth tennis shoes. Trump won, but VA is still stupid, and Harris won in VA along with the dem. Tim Kaine we were hoping around here to get out of the Senate. So, we are still a blue state. Hopefully next time. But we would like to see N. VA given to Washington DC because we can't win with half of the politicians living in N. VA. But on a good note, hopefully things will get better for all of the country. I am still going through things and mopping floors today. Getting ready to clean the bathroom windows and blinds also today. Jeepers, I know how you feel about not being able to get to things. I am looking for a couple of things around here and can't find them. So are packed up somewhere but not sure where. I have a lot of things I am getting ready to pitch out. Some are cleaning supplies I don't use. Some of it were things that DGD and her DH left here thinking I could use it, but I only could use one of what was in the boxes. Then I ended up with what DGS left here after he moved to NC. A lot of it is things I just cannot use. So, I finally made the decision to dump it all. Just nowhere to put it. The more I can get out of this house the cleaner it is looking. I am now waiting on a check to come from my retirement that comes each month, and I am going to get with my neighbor and go buy the garden soil for the boxes. I also have 6 huge planters to fill up, and some garlic to get for planting. I am really hoping to have my large garden back up this spring. 2 Quote Link to comment

Necie
I am still in a rut. Am being lazy today... on purpose. Was up til 5:00 am, slept til 8:00, so only 3 hrs of sleep. And I don’t nap well. I envy the western states during these late night events. In the last week, I haven’t gotten much done. Bits of work here and there on the kitchen. I *started* dusting yesterday. (My LEAST favorite job in the world!!) Went shopping at Rural King and WM one day. And one day I did get 7 qts of venison canned up out of the freezer (turned it into Mississippi pot roast). I’m planning on going to the farm this weekend. Not sure if I’ll go tomorrow or Friday. We need to finish clearing the garden, taking down or moving a bit of fencing, and rake leaves. I’m feeling better about the state of things that *could* happen due to the election. I’m happy with the results and glad that it wasn’t *close* like 4 yrs ago with the problems that came along with that. No recounts and questioning the validity and integrity of the system. 3 Quote Link to comment
