Watcha doing today?

Mt. Rider, a Propane heater will not overheat if the fan doesn't work. The fan is only to help distribute the heat out into the room.  Sort of like the wood stove. It has a fan on the back that blows the heat up and out. Plus, I have a fan on top that runs off the heat.  Glad you had a great ride and staying warm.

Jeepers, it is time to start some serious threating. Tell them to either get the matter straight or you are reporting them too corporate. Tell them flat out that the Ohio house is sold there should no longer be insurance on that house from you. And that if they don't get the Indy house straight and properly insured. That you are turning names in from both Ohio and /2 ndy office and asking them why they can't do their jobs like they are supposed to. You could even tell them if they don't straighten it out as of yesterday then you will be getting a new insurance but then they would probably love that.

My yard guy left me 14 bags of dried leaves over by my raised beds. So, I have been filling the beds with the leaves. They are now about 1/2 full. Will now be ready to start putting the garden soil in. I am halfway there to having the beds ready for spring. It is so nice outside that I would rather be working out there than in the house. But the temps will be starting to fall soon.

when we first started moving into this home, and the bathroom was torn out for hubby's remodel...we used one of those bedside commodes, and put saw dust in the bottom, and added more when we used it.  Then outside into a garbage bag for disposal.  Worked for us.  Then hubby built a great compost toilet with a seat and the whole works.  It's our 2nd bathroom should we need to bring it down from upstairs.

I agree that they are all crooked! To be honest, I really don't have any expectations that anyone else would be better. Especially hearing about all the issues with the hurricanes in the past years. I'm just so tired of 2 years of screw ups from S.F. All of this because they canceled the wrong house. If the bank hadn't sent the threatening notices, I wouldn't have even known. Imagine if I didn't have a mortgage and wasn't notified by anyone and had another disaster. With no insurance! As it was, I was living here a month with no insurance and didn't know it.

The agent here is a father and son outfit. I have the father but when I went into the office that day, dad was out. So it was the son who did it. I'm thinking he is in his early 30's. Probably a screw up who couldn't hold a job so daddy hired him. Okay, that's mean but I'm not I'm in a very compassionate mood concerning them. And it isn't like I phoned it in. I was sitting right there talking to him telling him that I live here and that I lived here 35 years ago. He even welcomed me back home and I was telling him about all the changes here now. AND they lied too. Said I came in the office and canceled Indiana house on Oct 5th. The house didn't even sell until Oct. 10th. and that same day I went to PA for a week vacation. Lies, lies and more lies. Now I wonder if it's because I'm a 72 year old woman? I just thought of that.  :o

I forgot that I did have two car wrecks. Both cars were totalled. But neither one was my fault and the other insurance company had to pay. We weren't even with S.F. then. It was before we moved to Ohio. We were with Farm Bureau then. Quick story, here we go again...

In one wreck I was stopped in the middle of the road waiting for traffic to clear so I could make a left-hand turn into a gas station. All at once BOOM! A tow truck pulling a van plowed into my rear full force. He said he never even saw me. Fair enough. So we initiated a law suit for damages and pain and suffering against the tow company. About 6 months later, it came across the news that the owner of the towing company was charged with murdering his wife aboard their boat because he caught her having an affair. Dang! I called my atty, (in a different town and a friend of D-ex) and told him about it. D-ex didn't think it would have any bearing on my case. Atty and I disagreed. Long story short, tow truck company's atty couldn't wait to get rid of me. They had much bigger fish to fry. So they paid me off right away. They started talking about dollar amount. I think we were suing for $8,000. I can't remember exactly. I told them, through my atty, that I wanted a check for $10,000 and my atty fee paid and the cost of my totalled car. They paid up right away. That was big money back in the 1980's. Why $10,000? Because I have OCD and couldn't handle odd amounts. I wouldn't have settled for $9,999.99.  :icon19:.  BTW, he was found guilty and sent to prison. Also, it wasn't he who hit me. It was his employee.

There other wreck happened less than a year later. An 85 year old man who was just released from the hospital for stomach surgery, pulled out of a parking lot and T-boned me. I'm assuming he was on pain meds. The guys in the glass shop he was pulling out of, saw the whole thing. We didn't sue over that one. But he totalled that car too. And the second whiplash for me that year. My face hit the steering wheel and left bruises from my teeth marks on my lips. Jostled the fluid around my heart and caused an infection. I was driving a little Datsun 280 Z. Poormans corvette. LOL. Good thing I was young back in those days.

Just a little stroll down memory lane.

Jarred up one case plus 5 jars of Taco Meat.  We bought the big 5# bags at a bulk store near us, put them in our roaster until they were hot and into pints they went  We love taco's and other tasty dishes we can use them for...ie...casserol's, speghetti casserol's etc.  Mix one with a pint of our Nacho cheese mix, add some Rotel and we have very nice dip or ???  Hubby is outside enjoying this wonderful weather, and putting away some of the odds and ends that were left under the back awning when he was working on his riding mower.  Now..I have a roaster and a canner to clean us.  Glad this is our standard pizza night!  We will be leaving the small "church" we have been attending for several years.  It's become nothing more than the pastor giving lessons.  I donated a lovely communion set...and it just sets.  I donated expensive anointing oil, and it just sets.  The piano, the organ, the pulpit empty, the chairs empty...everything takes place at a table with him, his wife, his daughter and their bookkeeper....hubby and I need more.  So we went online this morning to a community church in hubby's original town, and really enjoyed it.  They even had a communion service that was lovely.  Now...it's time for me to go find some hot chocolate and my chair...and relax.  Some of the other chores can wait, they won't run off!

Jeepers, would calling the 800 number for SF let you deal with someone from corporate instead of having to deal with the local OH office?   Call after hours or on the weekend so you don't end up getting transferred to the OH office.

I had to call corporate once when I kept getting kicked out of the hotel because they were late paying the bill...again and my adjuster wouldn't answer the phone. My local agent told me to contact the Senior Citizens Association to help me find someplace to sleep until they paid the bill. I'll never forget that! Not much was done except apologies. They were late many more times after that. Every freakin month. I finally had to leave my own credit card on file at the hotel so I wouldn't keep getting locked out. Hotel people were very nice. They had many years of dealing with S.F. insurance. They even tried calling S.F. because they have more private numbers to the people in charge of temporary housing. They could never get anyone to pick up the phone either. It was an extended stay hotel.

Good idea @The WE2's I have one of those bedside pottys someplace. One of my goals is to get all of my med type stuff in one place once and for all. I got very good at peeing in a cup.

Sorry your church fell through. That's very discouraging. Too many churches are failing due to lack of members these days. Older ones are dying off and younger ones don't go. One of the last churches I went to, the married pastor was fired for sexual misconduct with one of the members. That's pretty common I hear too. That sort of thing really makes you disillusioned. It did me.

I think you ladies are right. It was the 2 stories that was the big issue. It sucked the heat up the chimney and prevented the furnace from kicking on. It sort of warmed up the first floor but kept the upstairs cold. It was very noticeably cold up there. When I was without heat, I had to sit in front of the insert with the door open, to get warm. Maybe new houses have the two thermostat controlled furnaces? Or else they only use the fireplaces, the way I did, for ambiance.  Don't know.

When we had an old fashioned brick fireplace, we had the same issue in our 2-story home. Then we got it fitted with a fireplace insert. We use it to save on the cost of heating with our furnace. The furnace does not work in a power outage. The insert has an electric blower and a stem to control the airflow. Overnight, we stuff the firebox with wood and pull the stem. That allows the wood to burn slowly all night and it also burns the gas released by the wood. It can heat our entire first floor. If it gets too hot, we just open the doors to the upstairs and let some of the heat go up there.

In a power outage, we can still burn wood, but would need to use something else to power the blower. I have an emergency battery-type power pack that can run the fan for a while. We can charge it up using the car outlet or take it elsewhere. Any battery powered fan would probably due the same if it were placed in front the insert. If high winds or a bad storm is expected, we crank the heat up ahead of time to ensure that the house is already warm. This makes it easier to maintain the heat with or without the blower.

For water pipes, we heat water on our gas stove and fill empty plaastic bottles or jars with it. The bottles are placed against the pipes in the cabinets under all sinks. It is an imperfect method for keeping the pipes from freezing, but we seldom lose power for longer than a few hours. Our house has 2 kitchens and both are equipped with gas stoves. If we were unable to burn wood, we could use the ovens to heat each floor. or use a combination of methods.

Our house is technically a 2-family home, as well. If we have working electricity and one furnace has broken down, then we can get the whole house to a tolerable temperature using the furnace on the other floor. It wouldn't be warm, but we wouldn't freeze. This works especially well when the upstairs furnace is out, as heat rises. Another alternative would be to drain the pipes on one floor to keep them from freezing and temporarily stay in the unit with heat. If it was going to be super cold, then we could also put a space heater or two in the basement. I almost forgot... With electricity, we also have a couple of electric heat tapes thst we could use. There is one stubborn pipe and drain in our bathroom that freezes up in temps below 10 degrees if they last for a few days.

My main issue is I was gone during Christmas and had no idea what was going on until I returned. I wasn't home at the time.

During a blizzard, I was in Indiana celebrating Christmas. The electricity in Ohio went out. When it came back on, my furnace didn't. The real temperature was around -20. When I returned home after Christmas, I walked into a house with some of the ceiling on the floor and water gushing down. The entire entryway and part of the kitchen ceiling was either down or coming down.  It had probably been doing that over a couple of days. I'm not sure. I wasn't there.

The pipes between the first and second floor had burst. They didn't burst at a sink or toilet level. They burst between the two floors and sprung leaks inside the walls.

Not only that, the water softener and the sump pump in basement froze and cracked in half. Water was spewing from the water softener and since the sump pump froze and burst, the water in the basement had no where to go but up. My bottom two basement steps stayed underwater for a couple of months because they didn't realize the water softener was cracked. And the sump pump too because they couldn't get down there without wading through ice water and mud. Mud from the hole in the basement floor where the pump wasn't.

I had a basement full of preps and supplies and furniture. All gone due to water and mold. Mold grows surprisingly fast I learned. Who knew.

I don't know why my toilets didn't break because there were icebergs in them the exact shape of the inside of the toilet. I had to let them thaw a little before I could get the ice out.

A lot of my first floor ceiling was gone and they had to tear out half of the downstairs walls looking for pipe damage. All those walls and 3 bathroom walls and the kitchen were totally gutted.  Down to the studs!  And half of the floor had to be torn out and replaced from water damage. The water softener, water heater, sump pump and furnace all had to be replaced. All new plumbing and all new electric throughout the house. The last estimate I remember was for $117,000. Plus another $33,000. for the tear out.

There was nothing I could do since I wasn't there. Lesson learned, stay home in the winter. The following two years, I shut down the water and drained the pipes at the Indiana house all during the winter unless I was here. It was as horrible as it sounds.

I really need to stress that the pipes under the sink didn't burst at all. It was the ones in the ceiling and walls. That's why an EMP type of event in the winter concerns me. We can keep warm enough. But our house can't.

I wasn't the only one. Many homes were damaged and many many more offices were damaged because they were closed for Christmas.

Then the 2 year battle with insurance began. Ugh, I remember it like it was yesterday. Sorry. PTSD I think.

Jeepers, you were put through the ringer with that house in Ohio. So many issues that happened and the insurance company was nothing more than a nightmare.  I am just glad it got sold as fast as it did. And you can now live in Indy and not have to drive back and forth from Ohio to Indy.  I know it is a huge weight off of your shoulders. But I don't think you can ever get past what you went through.  Time to look forward to some good times now.

Martianchick, I hope all goes well with the house in Canada. Hopefully all will work in your favor.

Didn't get as much done in house today, but did get the raised bed boxes ready to start putting in the garden soil. Might do that tomorrow as all the bags are sitting on the patio. Hopefully I can also get at least one flower bed cleaned out and the mulch down as well. Just need to see what the weather will be like tomorrow. Hoping it will be like today. 65* was so nice outside today.

Well, we're still toasty warm in the front and not bad in the bedrooms.  ......however, the temp is going down.  By tomorrow night, it will likely hit zero or sub zero.  Sooooo.....  that those two guys show up tomorrow morning (they have their marching orders from J - property manager) with the right part and leave quickly with everyone happy! :happy0203:

Hopefully their prediction of a couple inches of snow is accurate.  Hopefully dudes get here before that happens and driveway gets slicker than it is now.  I didn't even go outside today.  Should have gotten some sunshine.  Had trouble sleeping last nite - get to thinking and    My own fault...getting off track.

Just 19* right now at 1am.  Almost done and ready for bed.  Have NO idea what time tomorrow they'll be here but they do have to get the part from "the warehouse"...?

We "went to church" on line.  I took a brief nap.  Turned the pellet stove off to cool it down and clear out the ash.  Sun was pouring in the South windows and it was ready to fire up again before the sun went down.  So far this has been quite easy ....compared to some adaptions.  (like Jeepers had!!!!!!)  :hug3:

Finally got to talk to my mom on phone.  Last evening and tonite, I keep getting a busy signal.  So tonite I texted (successfully thru the router) Bro to see if he could call her.  He'd just left from dropping off some groceries to her.  So between him and I and him and her.... we have NO idea why I'm getting a busy signal.  But she called me and we were able to chat.    That's a continuing saga...  Told her if you don't hear from me....you call me tomorrow.   Yeah.....well, if she's aware of the time and remembers.  She's not up to the "heavy lifting" anymore.  I'll just have Bro repeat today's routine.  But....I think I need to test our phone by calling someone else.  Tomorrow!

Stay warm Mt. Rider, hopefully they will be there this morning sometime and get you back up and running.  Glad you were able to get hold of your mom, and all is well. Hopefully whatever is going on with the phone will get straight.

It's a bit cold outside this morning to get anything done.  Low 40* But if it doesn't rain soon, I will go out in about an hour or so.  I just want to get the garden soil into the beds.

Need to make a trip to Kroger, and Kohl's to drop of a return to Amazon. Had a much bigger solar charger I had ordered that came broke. They have already replaced it so just need to return the broken one.

Just finished breakfast an hour ago and now just drinking coffee. That should warm me up before going outside.

My tree topper came early this morning. So now I am going to finish getting the tree decorated. Then I can get all the boxes out of the house and back in the shed out of the way till time to take it all down again. I also ordered one of those boards that you put under the seat cushions so that the cushions don't keep sinking into where the broken springs are. That will do till I go furniture shopping after the first of the year. I needed to do something I am tired of sinking down into the couch. I wouldn't have to deal with that if DGS would have stopped throwing himself on that couch. One big reason I didn't want to replace the couch yet.

Lots to get done today. Hopefully I will get though my list and get everything marked off.  I hope I can lift 40 lb. bags of garden soil up and over into the boxes. They are heavy. I have 11 of them to lift.  That might finish me off for the day. But I have to do it before the rain comes.

Got 5 bags of soil in one raised bed. It started to rain so still 6 more to go. Neighbor is going to help me on the next warmer day. Can't do anything in the rain now. I need a break after getting the 5 bags in the raised beds. They were heavy. Going to rest a bit and then finish decorating the tree. That is an easier job.  Not sure what I will do after that. But there are plenty of things to get done around here today.

I had a good day and a thought provoking one.

I went back to the State Farm office again. Fourth time. This time I got the guy who originally messed up. He said he heard all about it. More than once.  LOL. He could not apologize enough. Good start. He pulled up my file and said there was no reason for the Ohio agent to do what he did. It clearly states that I am bundled. I do not owe them an additional $9.73 every month on the Jeep. He said he will call the billing department and my Ohio agent and will get it straightened out. I told him I was concerned about the Jeep getting canceled. He said an agent can't do that on their own. Okay, but the emails said there could be a lapse in coverage. That had better not happen! I pay 6 months ahead and I'm up to date. He kept saying he was sorry and that it was all his fault. Way to take responsibility. So before I left I told him I accepted his apology and that I finally got the the bank straightened out, so we can forget it and move on. It's done. As long as he follows through with the Ohio agent. We'll see. They have one more chance.

I left there and headed to the Dunkin. Let's just say I'm covered for the rest of the week. :sEm_blush:  PSA, if you ever order from them, don't get a large. The mediums are really big!

Went to the gas station down the road. I didn't really need gas but they were handy and I have a lot of running to do this week. When I put gas in the Jeep, it always back washes. The pump stops but gas gushes up out of the tank all over the side of the car and on the ground. Every single time. So a young guy at the pump behind me asked me if it does it every time and he told me what was wrong with it. A cracked neck 'something' underneath by the gas tank. What a nice guy. He said maybe my son would know what it is. Or maybe grandson. I don't know how old you are. I laughed and told him I'm 72. He said, "Oh my gawd girl, I thought you might be 50. Where's your gray hair?!" I could have kissed him on the lips!  :grinning-smiley-044:

We stood there talking for a long time about cars. His name is John and he drives a dump truck and fixes up old cars. We hugged!    Okay, he might be in his mid 30's so no love connection. He told me to drive safely and buckle up. But what a mood lifter he was and just a nice guy. I hope my DGS turns out like that. I seem to be one of those approachable type people. Happens all the time. Someone always wants to talk to me. Or maybe I'm ugly and they just take pity on me. Whatever works. :008Laughing: My head still swivels though.

DIL called and DGS is over the flu and back to school. I just hope none of them get it. She bought me a ticket to go with them to see DGS school Christmas program on Wednesday. DS has a chemo infusion that day so he might not be able to go. I'll be representin' though. Then on Thursday we finally get to go Christmas shopping. Time is running out. We want to go while DGS is still in school so he can't snoop. I already told him Santa was on a tight budget this year. Bidenomics and a potential elf strike.  :D   I love being a grandma. I get away with stuff.

Then I got to thinking about the Jeep. I really love that thing. It's been so good to me. I was thinking...I can spend about $30,000 on another car or I can put about $3,000 on this one and get it all fixed up and keep the low insurance rate on it. I just pulled those numbers out of thin air. It's got 130,000 miles on it. I don't know. Just thinking out loud. Probably not a good idea. I'm really bummed that they don't make Liberty's any more. I don't see anything else I like as much as this one.

And another wild thought was about my landscaping. I have an old, what I call, plow. Lehman's call it a cultivator. Small 3 pronged deal. I'm thinking about fixing it up and putting it out in the yard. I'd want to chain it down some way because I wouldn't want it stolen. Maybe plant a little patch of wheat by it. Probably not one of my better ideas either. Oh, and I have that bottomless milk can sitting out there covering the well pipe. I'm probably gonna jake this yard up next year. Neighbors will be wishing for the good old days when it was so over grown you couldn't see the non-existent landscape.

You have hope, Jeepers.  Maybe this guy today really will fix the never-ending threats from Insurance companies.  I think a lot of people are keeping older model vehicles - that don't have all the junk stuff in them.

We have a furnace again!  :hapydancsmil:  :campfire:  :amen:

It was not without drama tho.  All to the tune of POURING DOWN SNOW ALL DAY!  { MtRider mumbles something about prediction said: TWO INCHES..HA!}  I've been sweeping snow off the steps dozens of times today.  Had to scrape snowprints off the steps too.  Too dangerous to not have them completely cleared.  Sent a novice who put the part in backwards.  Then he somehow got the idea that we were not getting any propane up from the tank.  So furnace guy was going to leave but I got J (property manager) on the phone with him before he left.  She told him some big circular part needed to be cleaned too so he got started on that.  A propane guy came out and checked.  He was really nice.  There was no propane pressure problem.  The novice had put the new part in backwards.    I wasn't there when that happened cuz, anticipating both their vehicles had to get turned around up there before going down our hill, I warmed up my old truck and got it out of the way.  Had to do that anyway, for ? snowplow? tomorrow?  So then they had plenty of room to turn around.  Must have been at least 6" down at that point and it's still coming down.

Now J has to figure out What All Happened?  Cuz she bills the owners for her time.  Kept her in the loop all day too.  She also assures owners that we're prepared to keep the pipes from freezing....already have pellet stove and 2 electric space heaters.  Yeah, we've got this.  LOL   Yeah, we're kinda like Eagle Scouts ...but we're old!

But it finally got done.  Propane guy was very nice.  He was kinda laughing when he told me the novice knew what was wrong now and is fixing it.  Pretty obvious which one of them saw the error.  So yeah, all's well that ends WARM!  With the heavy cloud cover, we're still above 10*  but it will drop fast if the clouds disperse.

I was up and down the stairs countless times today.  I also got the first 6-7" of snow off the car...in case we have to get somewhere quickly.  It's still snowing tho.

MtRider  ....I'm tired!  :0327:  and I hate snow  :campfire:

Mt. Rider you should sleep well tonight.   Glad the furnace is fixed now. My DGS has a Toyota. It now has almost 400,000 miles on it and still going. If your Jeep has 130,000, you might be in good shape. Just a few things to fix and you are good to go. Something to think about.

You guys are too cold for me. 10* and such plus the snow.  I would be hibernating for sure.

Finished decorating the house and got some other decorating finished as well. Still only got the 5 bags of garden soil dumped into one of the beds but it's a start.

Got most of the Christmas gifts sitting up on the craft table and will get those wrapped tomorrow. I feel like time is running out, but I think I might make it. As far as food for Christmas, all I need to get is a turkey. I have a ham in the freezer that I will cook. Got the plans for dinner together and will start on all that the week of Christmas.  I am having to wait till last minute for the turkey as I don't have freezer room and don't want to take up the fridge space right now.

And my bronchial cough is trying to come back tonight. Just don't know what set it off.

Saturday was cookie day. Everybody made it. Nobody sick! :cele: We all had a good time and the grandkids DESTROYED my kitchen. :happy0203:

Yesterday I mostly crocheted and rested up from being wore out Saturday. Every time I’d go to the kitchen for a cup of coffee, I’d take care of cookie stuff and even managed to get the tables wiped down. I drink instant coffee and heat the water in the microwave. BIG cup. It takes 3 minutes (crappy microwave) to heat. You really can get quite a bit done in 3 minutes. 😉

Today I went shopping in Angola (30 minutes). I think I’m all but done with Christmas shopping. If I need anything else, I can just run up to Dollar General (1/2 mile). I went to Walmart and got the 3 grandkids *big* Christmas gifts. Also crossed a couple things off the ‘grocery list’. Then to Dollar Tree and got all the grandkids’ stocking stuff. I even got Mom’s *gift*... 2 mugs (one is like a big, oversized soup mug— big around) and a bunch of specialty coffees, teas and hot cocoas. She loves that stuff. She’ll call me and say: “I just made a cup of *such-and-such* and sat down. It is SOOOOO good!” :cloud9: I also got a few more things crossed off the ‘grocery list’ there. Then I stopped into a big antique store that I used to have a booth in. The place is HUGE— 3 floors of a big, old city building. I was looking for some silverware that DDIL is wanting— her grandma’s pattern. I tried to zoom through, but kept getting distracted. 🙄😂 Didn’t find any of the silverware, but did find a treasure of a kitchen utensil!! And it only cost me $40!! :faint3::laughkick: But now it’s MINE, and I know I’ll never find another... An old, green handled, sideways blender that fits in a vaseline glass measuring cup. Now I need to find the measuring cup... I know where one is... just can’t get it til next summer. 😉

The plan for the rest of the week is to just get more stuff done around the house and work on wrapping presents.

@Necie. Sounds like you had a fun and productive day. I could get unto so much trouble in antique stores. D-ex and i used to go all the time. Also to estate sales. I never see estate sales any more. One of the antique stores we used to go to often was in Michigan City. I don't know if it's still there or not. It was a big one though. Another smaller one was in Nappannee. Not sure if it's still there it not either. It's best I don't look them up. :D

That's why we have kept hubby's raggedy looking pickup.  It's got the cap on it so he is able to keep stuff out of the rain or snow, and pretty safe from searching eyes and/or hands.  We put a replacement engine in it two years ago and a new transmission 3 years ago, so the mileage at this point is irrevalent (sp?) Needs a tune up so it can pull our travel trailer (bug out home on wheels).
