Stray Dogs Rescued From War-Torn Afghanistan Arrive in Utah

Mar 22, 2005 9:20 am US/Mountain

They were found half a world away, wandering the war-torn streets of Afghanistan. Today, Chopper and Apache are Utah's newest residents.

The dogs began their long journey from Afghanistan two days ago, arriving at the Salt Lake airport Monday night.

Six months ago the two dogs became mascots for a helicopter unit serving in Afghanistan after guardswoman Des Sharp found the newborn pups behind a shed. Ever since, the dogs have been the soldier’s companions.

But, Sharp is due to return home to Utah soon and the dogs she’s taken in were to be euthanized, according to military policy. That is when some Utahns came to the rescue.

Kara Buirgy and Alexis Waters with City Pet Club jumped into action, raising more than $6,000 to bring the dogs to Utah and spare their lives.

“People have put out so much love for them. Their donations of time and trying to get them back home. It just feels great. I was so excited tonight. It’s like having your own child gone and coming home again,” said Buirgy.

The dogs will be put up for adoption after Sharp returns home from Afghanistan, sometime around the first week of April.

If people want to see the dogs, they will be at the City Pet Club, located at 601 South and 500 West in Salt Lake.
