  1. LOL I feel stupid because I haven't figured out to respond to sone posts.

Oh, gawd, it's has been rough the last 5 years. Dad died in 2018, then Mom's health seriously declined with dementia, She still knows me and her other children, thank God,She will be 97 on May 27th this year, Please add her to your prayers - Bobbie Peterson is her name. She went blind last year about this time. I can't imagine that at her age! It's SUPER hard helping her. She has become a completely different person.

In my own life, I went through a horrible divorce  in 2009 I went through a difficult divorce and "won" but there is no winning in a divorce. I've been single since 2007. It sucks. I'm nearly 72! I'm taking care of Mom and living on my measely $635 a month. It's rough, but I'm doing ok. I have moments where I have outbursts, but for the most part, I'm calm because of my faith. Thankfully, I've been stocking and storing for over 20 years, partly due to this forum.

PS - Don't watch the fake media. It's all lies. WE are winning!

  2. Wow. I loved the email I just got from Darlene.

I need to apologize for not keeping up with you all. I've been engulfed with taking care of my elderly parents. Dad passed in 2018, but Mom is still with us at nearly 97. I'm tired and exhausted.

The only thing I disagree with in the newsletter is that there will be no political discussions! Nope, we HAVE to have such a room. Please, create a political discussion room! I'll be back when that room is created.

    Love you all!

  3. Thanks for the birthday wishes, gals~! I know I've been remiss in coming to the board.

A bit of an update: My daughter, Eden, is happily married (10 years now) with a daughter, Saffron Rose (age 6 1/2). She took time off from modeling and acting, but now that Saffy is in school, she is going back to her career - in smaller doses, so she can still do all the "mom" things. In the past, she was a top international model and has had several parts in various movies and TV shows. Her British hubby is a super successful master chef, who has a couple restaurants in the L.A. area and has done some TV shows as well. He's considered one of the top 20 chefs in the country.

I'm still doing my skin care business (EdenSong Essentials and a sister company, RawSum Organics), but I'm spending more time taking care of my elderly parents. They will both be 90 next year and are still living independently, but they are slowing down considerably. Dad has mobility issues and my mom's having some memory issues, along with knee problems.

I got divorced in 2009, though it dragged on through the appellate court until 2011. Fortunately, it was virtually all in my favor - if you can say that in any divorce, because I don't think anyone wins in divorce. I've been living in the country on 2 acres in the house that my EX wanted. It has become my home, though it still needs some finishing (kitchen, 2nd bath and some repairs). It is what it is. Money is tight, but I'm okay with that. It's made me become quite resourceful.

After much procrastination, I spent the last several weeks finally tackling my basement that was filled with EX's crapola. It's now got a large area for me to do crafting and I will have to learn how to use all the power tools EX left behind (he took nothing when he walked out and then tried to take it all in the divorce, but the judge nixed that)! lol That will be a challenge, but I have great neighbors that I can count on to give me pointers.

My BFF retired from Vanderbilt and moved out of the city (she lived next door to me in Nashville) and now she lives about 20 minutes down the road from me. I helped her stage her house and it sold the first day. We've been working on getting her organized in her new (smaller) home - that's been a challenge, too!

I can't believe I turned 64 this year! Wow, time flies!!!!

  4. I was just researching/googling my old 1952 grind o mat and came across this thread. LOL Mine appears much older than this one and doesn't look the same at all. **sigh** I came across all my grinders and mills when doing a thorough "decrapification" of my basement. I'm afraid some of them have gotten moisture/rust damage, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to clean them. Any suggestions? Would coca cola work? I've read how it can remove rust on other things.

  5. It was a small, private forum started after some conflict at this board. Several of us also were over there. It was only active for a year or so if I recall correctly, but it sure was fun while it lasted. Anyways, over there I was Little River. As I said, it was a LONG time ago -- '99? '00? I just happened to be using Oxyclean yesterday and remembered it. Add to that I saw a subforum here called The Front Porch and it all took me back :D

Yes, that's the one! Anyway, glad you made it back here.

  6. Coconut has amazing properties (antioxidant, antimicrobial, soothing, easily absorbed) and is an ingredient I use in many formulations. I make a deodorant using it with arrowroot powder, baking soda, extra virgin coconut oil, pure essential oils of lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint, lemongrass, and tea tree.

Calamus root is used to make calamine lotion. Orris root smells like violets. They both have anti-inflammatory properties.

Here's some info on orris root and calamus root.

  7. Deodorant Powder

Mix equal parts of the following ingredients:

    orris root

    orange peel powder

    lemon peel powder

    Add for scent:

    calamus root OR licorice root

Put mixture into a powder dispenser and use on any part of the body to deodorize.

  8. Any shampoo with SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) or SLSE (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) damages the hair follicles and may cause hair loss. Guess what?

Hmmm, no edit button -- that should read SLS and SLSA.

    (I was a tired puppy and mistyped~!)

  9. Any shampoo with SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) or SLSE (Sodium Laureth Sulfate) damages the hair follicles and may cause hair loss. Guess what? Virtually every shampoo on the market contains it. You might try shampoo bars.

If you do try baking soda, as suggested, be sure to follow up with an apple cider vinegar rinse (1:4 ACV to water) to maintain a proper pH balance.

Essentials oils of Thyme, Rosemary, Juniper, Lavender and Cedarwood, diffused into a base of Jojoba and Grapeseed oil, then massaged into the scalp every day, should show you a significant improvement over time.

  10. Hi Lois,

Have you made this cream recipe? I don't mean to butt in, but I really wouldn't recommend most of those ingredients.

SAO (sweet almond oil) has a very short shelf life. Cocoa butter is good (protective and water repellent), but is does clog the pores, so you wouldn't want to use it on your face. Glyercin is quite sticky and gives cream that "drag" most folks don't like. Emulsifying wax is okay, but it's not organic, so you might consider using lecithin, but that's not crucial if organic isn't an issue for you. Another emulisfying combo is beeswax and borax. The first beeswax/borax emulsion is attributed to a Roman physician name Galen (130 - 200 AD). Without preservatives, adding water to any cream is asking for "cooties" and "bugs" to grow, even if you can't see anything growing (like mold). Water is susceptible to bacterial, fungal and yeast growth and must have an anti-microbial agent added to it. You could use grapefruit seed extract, alcohol (more than 15% ethyl alcohol is self preserving ) -- also Vit E and Rosemary oil extract help to extend the life of the oils/butters.

Here is a super, super easy formula without water, using cocoa butter and SAO, so no preservatives are required. You could add a bit of Vit E, if desired, to extend its shelf life.

    Easy Hand Cream

If you're looking for a fabulous gift or just a treat for yourself, try making your own hand cream! It smells wonderful, it's all natural (all the ingredients you'll need are available at your local grocery or drug store), and it's easy to make -- it only takes a few minutes.

    Here's how:

    1. Over medium-low heat, melt 4 tbsp. cocoa butter (coconut oil could be subbed) with 4 tbsp. beeswax.

    2. Stir in 4 tbsp. warmed almond oil (jojoba or grapeseed could be subbed). This mixture will thicken quickly.

    3. Stir until lump free, then pour into a pretty dish. Cream will solidify as it cools. (You may add Vit E and essential oils at this point -- never when hot, only as it's cooling.)

Here are some suggested oils to try: apricot kernel oil (great for sensitive and older skin); avocado oil (one of the most moisturizing oils and good for older skin); cocoa butter (protective and water repellent); grapeseed oil (a dry oil, good so the cream isn't too greasy); jojoba (actually a liquid wax and good to use so the cream isn't too greasy); peanut oil (good for all skin types); sesame oil (natural sunscreen); Shea butter (natural sunscreen); and wheat germ oil (high in vitamins and minerals).

Also, it's actually better to work in percentages, as it's easier to increase/decrease quantities. It's also more accurate when formulating. Here's an easy calculator to convert to percentages:

    Hope this helps. smile
