Guest Guest
As I had mentioned previously, I am trying to learn how to tell the weather by the things I see and observe around me. I just finished collecting a few URL's on the subject. They have a strong tendency to repeat themselves but I found that if you sift through the information on all of these pages, they all have something some where that the others don't have. I am still a bit disapointed though because they did not have the things I learned from the old time farmers I have talked to. Like how to tell how much snow and wind, or lack of it, you will have by just looking at where a squirrel places it's nest in the trees. Or how to look at a chickens breast bone (when you butcher chickens) to tell what your winter will be like. I have found this one to be VERY accurate and can be used world wide as long as the chicken butchered was from the location that you wish to know the winter weather of. A man the other day started to tell me about acorns but got side tracked. Lucky for me I know where he works and also I have something he wants very badly, so I will be talking to him soon (I hope) and see what I can learn from him. I think I will learn a lot more than just about acorns. This man seems to practice the study of nature to tell the weather. Anyway those who want to know what I know, feel free to ask and if you have any to share, PLEASE share them with me/us. I feel the day will come and is not far off when some of us homesteaders will need and depend on this information just as the homesteaders of old used to. Enjoy! Lois
Years ago,in 1978-79, I was living in Black Canyon City, Arizona. I looked out the window of my kitchen and was amazed to see a sea of dried grasses moving across my driveway to my garden area. The grasses were being carried by ants! They were carryong them to their nest. About 2 weeks later we were hit with what is referred to as a 100 year flood! and 3 weeks after that another flood. Animals and insects will let you know when bad weather is comming. Quote Link to comment
Guest Guest
I tell by a few things for winter: how thick my beagle's coats are! the depth of soft shell clams how "fat" blue shell crabs are anyway...we will have a bad winter here in southern newengland! ------------------ Quote Link to comment
Guest Guest
Thank you so much Hillbillee - that's a superb list of links. I'll enjoy them. And go on...please tell...how in the world can you forecast the weather with a chickens breast bone I'd quite like to know about the squirrel too Thanks Quote Link to comment

Guest Guest
I moved this discussion down to the Homestead forum where I feel it more accurately fits.
